The look did not go unnoticed. Okay, so kid's not as gullible as he looks. She was getting bored of the joke anyway. She shrugged, and turned her attention to the magazines. "Yeah, it could have been one of those. I know nothing about Quodpot."

"Oh. Well, just one more year right?" She picked up a magazine, flipped through it without a hint of interest, and replaced it. "I'm A...."

"What about this one, Quinnlin?" In the nearly empty store, her Mother's voice carried through the store. There was a pause, as her Mother hadn't yet looked up to notice she wasn't there.

Quinn ducked below the line of shelves so she'd be out of her Mother's line of sight and held a finger to her lips. Just in time too. Her mother had finally realized she wasn't there.

"Quinnlin?"

"Quinn," she whispered to Mark. "And that," she nodded in the direction of her Mother, "reprehensible beast is my mother."
