Raising her hand, the sixth year sat up a bit straighter. "They're oils found in plants, professor. Oils that help the plants stay healthy, give the plants their scents. I'm familiar with the use of these oils for aromatherapy, which can help relax you and relieve stress."

Paul foresaw the connection the students would make with aromatherapy. Afterall, it was what essential oils were most famous for! “Yes, very good, Junia! Many of them have different effects on our psyche...depending on the smell.”

These exercises never helped him relax, but instead the professor's antics amused him, so he supposed they worked just fine, only differently from what professor Myers might have had in mind. Awkward arm movements followed, some finger wiggling... breathed in... and breathed out... all while pursing his lips to keep himself from grinning.

Oh, and they'd be talking about essential oils? How awesome would it be if they learned how to extract them and make those lovely scented oils that they'd used in Divination? Speaking of... he remembered being mesmerized by them in class, and the professor's warning that they could get to his head if he didn't stop smelling them. "The oils can be harmful if you sniff them for too long," he said, his hand in the air.

True story right there.

…..Could they? “Well I supposed sniffing anything for too long can be detrimental,” Paul mused with a lopsided grin.

She rooooooolled her neck and then rolled it some more and breeeeeeathed in and then breeeeaaathed out. See, it already felt nice. Were they going to do this all class period? That sounded like a nice class. In, out..... in.... out..... in...... out.... Very nice, very relaxing....

Until he yelled.

Startled at the sudden loud voice of the professor, Natalie jumped, nearly falling off her pillow, her blue eyes popping wide open. What a brutal way to to wake them up. Not that she had been sleeping. Although, she didn't remember when she stopped rolling her neck...

Anyway, essential oils, right. Natalie yawned... and then raised her hand. "My grandmother uses Lavender oils to help her sleep," she offered. Natalie, however, did not appreciate the smell of lavender and thought it would actually prevent her from sleeping instead of helping.

“Lavender...smells so good. It relaxes and calms many people,” he said with a nod. “Good, Natalie!”

The Ravenclaw was good on making those.

He didn’t have to answer though, no. The neck exercises were proof enough for her and when linked to all they’d done in the term thus far, it was safe to say they wouldn’t be running around the greenhouse chasing bouncing bulbs within the hour.

Jessa rotated her head, performing a neck roll as the Professor gave the instructions. It was amazing how you never really knew all the tension residing in your body until you started working it out. Slowly she rolled her neck, ignoring the odd cracking sound that came every now and then. It was all apart of this relaxing thing she assumed the Professor was trying to get them into. She reached her hand up, not necessarily “reaching for her dreams” as the man had put it but reaching up all the same.

“Essential oils are hydrophobic.” Jessa offered up, wiggling her fingers to get the circulation going in them.

Would they be doing the same with the other hand? Professor Myers was no Noble but suffice to say the Fifth Year was a lot more hesitant about jumping ahead than before the man obtained employment.

“VERY good point, Jessa, good job!” he said with a grin in her direction. And an interesting point, too.

And then came a question about essential oils. Someone mentioned something about aromatherapy and he really hoped that wasn't the direction the class was going. Deep breathing, meditation, aromatherapy... He wanted to see giant, man-eating monster plants!

The aromatherapy comment had given him an idea though, and Max reluctantly raised his arm. "Are they used in girly stuff? Like perfumes and incense?"

….girly stuff. “Mr. Carten...girl stuff…..I highly doubt you’d call cologne...girly stuff., Or deodorant. Plus...girly stuff….I don’t confine myself to gender norms, thank you,” he was a tad unimpressed but tried not to show it. Ahem.

Anyways.

Rolling her head, she went up, down, side to side, gently focusing on her breathing as she went....

Huh, amazing how relaxed one could be even with a stressful subject with just some stretches. Wiggling her fingers into the air, and then down at her side, she exhaled slowly.... and then ... OOH, another topic she actually semi-knew!!! SEE, OPTIMISM FOR THAT ONE LESSON she could follow.... this was why she continued the subject!

"It's literally the essence of a plant's fragrance. And it doesn't necessarily have to refer to just those used for aromatherapy. But it could refer to oils that are ingestible too, such as garlic or clove oil." Because of course she would know the ingestible references.

Ohhhh LOOK AT YOU, SKYLAR! Paul clapped after she said her answer. “VERY good, Skylar, I hope everyone HEARD THAT--” Looking at you, Zoryn Spinnet, who NEVER PAID ATTENTION.

Was he for real???

She looked around and noticed all the other students were following his lead. This guy was a loon. Well looking at how he was dressed, he seemed like the guru yoga posing type. Zae shrugged and thought it couldn't hurt and she breathed in and out. Hmmm it helped a little bit. She wasn't going to do the stretches though. She is a firm believer in that your muscles needed to be warmed up before stretching. Zae faked it and just stretched out her back. She heard a pop and that felt amazing! Oh yeah that was the spot!

Now onto the question to start it off. Did she know anything about essential oils? Zae pursed her lips in thought and thought to herself. Hmmm aren't those the things her mom light up in her room and that calmed her down. Yup pretty much. "Professor I know some of the oils like eucalyptus is used for stress relief." She remember reading it off the candle description and asking her about it.

Ooooh he had almost forgotten about eucalyptus! It smelled so captivating, though! “Yes yes, you’re right, Zarina!”

"Professor, essential oils are really just the condensed aromatic compounds of plants. They're called essential because they are the essence of the plant's fragrance. Sort of an obvious connection there, when you think about it. When I make lotions and things for people, I use some essential oils, since they smell so strongly, rather than using petals or leaves or things." They weren't as useful for her potions, for the most part, but everything had a use.

“Very good, Katy.” he winked in her direction. He thought Katy Toussaint might actually be aware of the spell he was about to teach them, honestly.

It wasn't like him to lose his cool, therefore, finding his center in class was most welcome. As instructed, he rolled his head slowly clockwise, and then anti-clockwise when told. He did raise his arms, but instead of wiggling his fingers, he had it spread out wide, releasing the negative energy right out of his fingertips, and opened himself by inhaling the positive energy through his nostrils, down to his lungs and around his system. He already feels good just by doing that, as he lowered his arms.

He did not fancy the loud clap afterward though. That took away the peace that was just building up in him. Jace sat taller on his pillow, taking in the answers of his classmates before raising his own hand to offer his reply. "Essential oils, aside from natural plant extracts are powerful therapeutical agents. Synergies is a thing too when essential oils are blended together to form a more powerful therapeutical oil." Clever of the former Ravenclaw to start the class with breathing exercises. The activity was a bit of a giveaway.

Well well, Paul smiled in Jace’s direction and gave him a thumbs up. “Veeeeery good, Jace, you are correct.” So far, no one had said a WRONG thing about essential oils. Impressive, to say the least!

"Well, I like mint oil. It has rejuvenating properties and...stuff." Yeah, Night should probably just shut up and meditate. It was obvious she didn't know what she was talking about.

And….stuff. Paul chuckled. “You’re not wrong; it has…”stuff” as you say.” He winked.

Zoryn almost offered that up too, but after speaking her first answer into existence, she had stopped paying attention all together. Like, uh, no offense though.

“Well..in that regard, yes, but there is actually a difference between vegetable oil and...essential oils. They’re not the same thing.” Well there was...the first wrong answer of the day. But it wasn’t horribly unfounded.

"I agree that essential oils come from plants. I think the oils from trees smell the best. Like cedarwood. I don't know how they get them out of the wood though." She closed her eyes and imagined the smell of her dads aftershave. It smelled like cedarwood and she missed that woodsy aroma.

After answering, she shifted her bum back and forth to get a better position on her pillow. Her legs were starting to fall asleep and the re-positioning movement helped get the blood flowing back to her feet.

CEDARWOOD SMELLED AMAZING PAUL COULDN’T AGREE MORE. He beamed. “Good good. We will learn how in juuuuuuuUUuust a few don’t you worry, m’dear!”

But ok stretching sesh done. They were talking about essential oils now? Hah his grandmother really should really drop by theres so many Professors she'd get along with "Sir, essential oils are extracts of plant oils and are very fragrant, which is why its used most widely in aromatherapy. Essential oils are used in diffusers, which comes in a wide variety of versions, from simple diffusers like the stick-in-oil evaporative diffuser to candle-heated clay diffusers to something very sophisticated like a nebulizer or an ultrasonic mist diffuser."

……...Paul blinked a few times at Tenacius and just nodded. “Yes...Yes indeed. We won’t be going into that much today, but you’re certainly right!” It was more in depth than Paul ever wanted to teach about essential oils! But Tenacius had read his textbook all right. Some textbook, anyway, because he was fairly certain the Herbology textbook didn’t mention essential oils at all.

SPOILER!!: Daisy
QUOTE=Ginevra;12311169]Daisy was feeling quite relaxed after the meditation exercise. She thought about what her answer would be as she slowly raised her hand, "Professor, a good use of essential oils would be to help relieve muscles after exercise such as a Quidditch game."[/QUOTE]

“Some of them would, yes.” He nodded. Not all of them would be good for it, though.

SPOILER!!: Shera

Now on to actually going about the lesson. Essential oils? She knew that her mother loved them and had them all around their house which meant she was feeling alright about this. Even if she didn't actually know that much about them herself. "Normally we dilute them with water? Cause I think some of them can hurt if you don't dilute them... although from memory the amount you have to dilute them can differ depending on what kind of oil and also the person's sensitivity."

She knew that last one because her own skin had gotten irritated and needed the oil to be a whole lot more diluted than her mother usually had it.

So where was he going with this?

Where they going to learn how to make their own essential oils? Because that would be pretty cool... or did some magical plants respond well to essential oils? There were too many options.

“YES! And funnily enough, some VEGETABLE oils are used to dilute them,” he responded to Shera. Since Zoryn had just mentioned vegetable oil and all.

She looked around the room, wondering if anyone here was a viable candidate to crack her back for her, but she was snapped out of it by Professor Myer's loud welcome-back-to-earth voice.

"Well... like everyone else has been saying, I know there are many oils used for different purposes like sicknesses, body health, hygiene, brain activity, as others have said of course stress and anxiety... I'm familiar with tea tree, peppermint, uhm... eucalyptus, jojoba... I think pomegranate?" she had heard a few others mention lavender already, so she decided to leave it at that. "They're used in soap, lotion, fragrances, and cleaning supplies... I'm pretty sure anyway," she added. That was enough out of her, she wanted to lay down now.

Paul widened his eyes. “Oh..what is a jojoba?” He found the word..fun to say, though. Jojoba. JOJOBA. What was a JOJOBA? Please answer us, KYE PLEASE. It was rare for Paul to NOT know what a student was talking about in regard to Herbology stuff.

Breath in. Breath out. Alyce followed Professor Myers's lead, rolling her head side to side and focusing on her breathing. She could feel herself more relaxed. But she's not going to raise her arms up and wiggling her fingers up. No, she's just going to focus on her breathing and rolling her neck. Yup. Yup.

Essential oils? "Essential oils come from extracting the different parts of plants, like flowers, leaves, bark, roots, resin and peels. And my mother said oils of rosemary can stops hair loss."

CAN THEY? “I need them, then. Please gift them to me for my birthday, please, yes, please!” Paul joked...slightly. But his fluff hair was getting…….less and less all the time.

Then, she shifted counter clockwise with the man's next instructions, still keeping her pace in breathing. Then... reach... what? Vivian blinked and then obliged as she watches the rest of her classmate to the stretching thing, reaching up for the ceiling, while wiggling her fingers. She liked doing that.

Well, it did sort of work in the relaxing bit. It did, but then Myers screamed and she'd have fallen off her seat if only they weren't seated on pillows at the moment.

Essential oils? "For massage, Professor?" Vivian said, her hand up. "And their scents make all bad things go away." Figuratively, of course. But yeah, its fragrance did wonders. Somehow, it made her think about her mum.

“MASSAGES. Yes. Though, I haven’t had a massage in years.” That needed to change pronto. Over the summer, perhaps. With Milton.

He then considered the amount of uses for essential oils. Fragrances, soaps, etc. etc. "They're also used for hair to help keep it healthy looking and preventing dry and scalp issues."

And since that, he was just going to stay quiet and hope his legs have not fallen asleep because that is the woooorst.

……..Theo. Paul just gave him a look before moving on. Because the boy was quiet, and Paul questioned whether he was really paying attention or not.

“SOOOO many of you raised very good points and most of you were correct.” Besides you, Zoryn Spinnet. Ahem. Not that her idea was bad...or one that people didn’t often make; it was done very often. “The OFFICIAL definition of an essential oil is…. DRUMROLL--” Paul provided his own drum roll by hitting the ground FIERCELY with his palms-- “A natural oil typically obtained by distillation and having the characteristic fragrance of the plant or other source from which it is extracted.”

AND TADA. ESSENTIAL OILS.

“We will be learning three things...today, in regard to uses plants possess for us. The first one is, if you haven’t guessed, how to extract the essential oil from a plant. You will see...on either side of us along the edge of the greenhouse, I have many potted plants. Pick one and...try to extract that essential oil. The spell is NOT hard to perform, but the WAND MOVEMENT is very precise. The incantation is ’natatraho.’ That is NAH-TAH-TRAH-HOH. Emphasis goes on the TAH. The wand movement...is…” And Paul flung his wand forward on the NATA- “Like you’re fishing. Whip your wand at the plant on the NATA aaaaand on the TRAHO--” Paul whipped it back, as if he WERE fishing with a fishing rod. “The essence will look like a strand attaching to the tip of your wand.” Paul summoned a plant from the side, a clove plant to be exact, and thought he would demonstrate. He called out “NATATRAHO--” flinging his wand forward, then YANKING it back suddenly, and an amber colored liquid, almost in stringlike fashion, followed his wand tip as if attached. Paul then grabbed a vial from his pocket and carefully lowered the string-liquid into the glass and...then corked the top.

“SOOOO practice the spell and the wand movement...pick a plant and...grab a vial...and GO! I will be walking around if you need any help!” Paul beamed and pocketed the clove oil. “Keep in mind that some of these oils would need to be distilled before use! SO whichever you end up getting, make sure to do your research after class! And YES you can keep your oil! It’s yours!”

GET GOING!
