Skylar was about to set the mouse back in the maze but apparently the familiarizing bit was over and so instead the sixth year returned the mouse to the cage. Not that she was opposed to holding it; it was fake and wouldn't harm her. Anyway, attention back on Marchand a moment as posed a question for them.
Magically make the maze more complicated? Was that magic on the mouse or the maze? Staring at the man thoughtfully a moment, she raised her hand finally. "is it possible to maybe magically charm some obstacles in the maze? Like a mini cat in its path... or water squirting out from one of the walls?" It wasn’t long after Gaston posed his question that he saw Miss Diggory’s hand go up. He called on her and listened carefully to her answer, nodding in approval. “Indeed it is possible, Miss Diggory,” he said. “ Either of those ideas would be effective – I especially like the one about the mini cat!” He smiled a little as he imagined an animated toy cat in the maze. "Good work, buddy." he baby-talked at the critter and closed the latch on his cage.
Ooh! A question from the professor? Spells for giving the mouse a hard time with the maze? Hmm... He raised his hand. "Well, Professor, if we wanted the mice to struggle with the maze again, we could use Obliviate to simply make them forget the layout, but I suspect from your earlier presentation that that would defeat the purpose of today's lesson." he answered with a laugh. "But we could probably use The Confundus Charm!" Gaston watched as Mr. Kenway led his mouse into the cage with a trail of cheesecake rather than just picking it up and putting it inside. He couldn’t help but smile as he overheard him talking to the mouse, and his smile grew even wider when he heard the boy’s answer to the question. He’d come very close to guessing the spells they’d be doing! “Sound reasoning, Mr. Kenway,” he said. Quote:

Then she put she last of his cheesecake inside with him and shut the door.
Turning her attention back to the professor, Jessi listened as he asked a question. She thought about it for a minute and then raised her hand. “Maybe we could use the Daydream Charm. That way, the mice could see things that weren’t actually there. The maze could look different and they would probably get confused.” See, she had been reading. Since Jessi didn’t know how to perform many charms, she figured she at least needed to know about of a lot of them. One step at a time. Miss Velasquez’s hand was the next one Gaston saw, and her answer earned her a beam from the professor. He hadn’t expected a first year to think of the Daydream Charm! “Yes, that’s exactly what the Daydream Charm would do! Good thinking, Miss Velasquez!” he said. Quote:

The Professor asked how they could magically make the maze harder and Maxton was going to suggest the Confundus charm until an older Ravenclaw boy beat him to it.
There was no way he was about to raise his hand and provide an answer unless he was absolutely sure it was right and Maxton was out of ideas. Gaston’s eyes landed on Mr. Carden. The boy was being quiet for now, but that was okay. Maybe he would have something to say later. He gave him an encouraging smile as he waited for more answers to come in. Quote:

But they were moving on now, and so she paid attention to the class, after putting her mouse back into the cage.
Hmm. She thought about it, trying to think of how they could use magic to make the maze harder. She wanted to think of a good answer him. Eventually she put her hand up into the air. " guess you could use Obscuro, to obscure the mouse's vision as it goes around the maze, thus making it harder Gaston was sure it was only a matter of time before someone mentioned something to do with sensory deprivation, and he nodded as Miss Paton named Obscuro. “Yes, obstructing the mouse’s vision would be an effective way to hider its progress. Nicely done, Miss Paton!” he said. Quote:

There would still be the scent, but it would still confuse him." Kye was thinking out loud now... she wished she had more spells coming to mind. She could visualize what she wanted to do, but the spells were tip of the tongue. Gaston nodded, smiling a bit at Miss Atwater’s ideas… both of them. “Good ideas, Miss Atwater,” he replied. “As you said, the mouse would still be able to smell the cake - and it could still feel around for it too – but a disillusionment charm would confuse the mouse for at least a few moments.” Quote:

It was over much to soon however as the lesson moved on. Already having Cheesecake the mouse in hands made it much easier to get her inside the little cage. "Sorry, Cheesecake. I'm sure I'll get to play with you again soon.." she whispered setting the cage at the corner of her desk. Being as quiet as possibly she very quickly moved to her original desk but just to grab her bag before returning to sit by her group once more. Pulling out parchment and her quill she was ready to take down any notes while she thought of an answer to the professors question. "There's the Jelly-Legs curse," she answered softly wrinkling her nose a little. Not that she would use that on the mouse... even if she were able to cast it. Blink, blink. Now here was an answer Gaston hadn’t been expecting! “Well, yes, I suppose that’s one way to hinder the mouse,” he replied with a small smile, trying to hide his surprise. “ Very good, Miss Prichard.” That method was a bit cruel for his liking, but no less a correct answer. Hmm? What charms could they use to make it more difficult.... There were so many charms that could be used... " We could use an illusion charm, Sir. ", she said after being called upon. Then he announced they would be taking the mice away, for the time being. She instinctively held little rose close to her body as she saw the cages float up from the box and land on the desks. Not wanting to get in trouble or, Merlin forbid, lose house points, she very reluctantly placed Rose inside the cage. At least she was still on the desk with her.
A few tears fell from her eyes and slowly slid down her cheeks. She didn't even bother wiping them away. She knew she would be saving her ugly cry for later, when Rose was gone. "Sir, I suppose you could make a few of the walls appear to be solid, when they are actually openings. Kind of like how we got on the the Hogwarts Express at Platform 9 3/4?" It was her best idea, and it wouldn't hurt Rose. The other students were already commenting on things that made her stomach swirl. Obliviate? Confundus? Jelly-legs curse?? Nope, she wouldn't be doing any of those to Rose. Poor ickle Emmalyn! Gaston could tell she was trying not to cry, and it was breaking his heart! He wanted to give her a big hug until she felt better, but that would be inappropriate. Understanding dawned on his face when she spoke, and he bent so that his eyes were level with hers. “Shh… please don’t cry,” he said gently, his tone more like that of a father comforting a child than a professor giving a command. He aimed his wand at a small box on his desk and summoned a few tissues for the girl. “ I’m not going to take Rose away. The spell I used on her wears off after time, and she’ll turn back into a toy. But if you come see me after class, I’ll put a stronger spell on her so she’ll stay this way. How does that sound?”
He wasn’t sure how or even if she would answer his question, but he was very impressed with what she said. “That’s a very creative answer, Miss Walsh,” he said, “and it would work well!” Quote:

She wasn't fully sure what charm would work that hadn't been talked about yet,
but she looked at the maze and tried to think of something. Running through all the spells in her head. "What about a duplicating charm where you could duplicate the cheesecake and place it in multiple places. I know we have many treats here, but if we didn't."
She kept looking down at the maze though thinking. Now here was an answer he hadn’t heard yet! Gaston smiled, nodding in reply to Miss Valla. “ That’s a good point, Miss Valla,” he said. “Nice job!” Quote:

She tried to think of the least obstructive thing she could and then raised her hand. "Maybe you could charm some of the walls to move? So after a few seconds they moved, making the mice confused?" she suggested. It still was a terrible thing to do to them, but at least it wasn't painful or MEAN, like squirting them with water. Obsession was a dangerous thing and it was the most potent fuel when it came to her. There was just something about trying and trying and trying until you cracked the code.
Anyway, the man definitely had her more attentive than she’d been when she walked in earlier. Why couldn’t every charms class be another experiment? They could find innovative ways of getting things done or they could study outcomes. Merlin she’d never be late to class then—not that she was now save the odd time or two but you got the idea.
Jessa waited for the cage to arrive at their desk then plopped the little guy back inside, content with the promise they would get to use him again. All that told her was there would be more experiments making this officially one of the best charms classes ever. Right now she was perfectly in her element. They were discussing theories. This was life. “We could mimic the moving staircases in the castle within the maze, causing the walls to move about as well. Constantly changing, which would then make the paths constantly change. That’d be pretty challenging.” Miss Cambridge’s answer was long the same lines as Miss Reynolds’s, and it too earned an approving smile from Gaston. “ Great idea, Miss Cambridge!” he replied. “A constantly changing layout would be challenging for any creature!” Including humans! He almost laughed to himself as that answer reminded him of his first encounter with the moving staircase. Quote:

To be honest, neither did she.
The only reason she did was they said that they were going to be using them later.
What could they cast on their maze or mouse to make it more difficult? "Ummm.... Confundo maybe?"
She didn't like the sound of that though. Here was another student on the right track! So it seemed Miss Ben-Ari agreed with Mr. Kenway’s answer. “Yes, that’s correct, Miss Ben-Ari,” Gaston replied with a small knowing smile. Quote:

" Professor, is there a spell or charm to make the cheesecake less fragrant?" It was a good idea, right? Gaston considered Miss Dixon’s answer, which was really more of a question, for a moment. “There is,” he replied with a small smile. “ There are a few ways you could go about that. You could use a spell on the cake itself or magically encase it in a barrier that would stop the scent from spreading through the maze. Or if you really wanted to confuse the mouse, you could use a spell to fill the maze with a different scent that would overpower the cake and make it harder to smell. Very good, Miss Dixon!” Quote:

Okay. Right. Yes. The maze. How to make it more difficult?
Naturally, before Abra could even properly kickstart his brain (mornings were hard, okay?) a bunch of answers had been given that he would have liked to provide. Part of him believed that he totally would have thought up all of those answers if he hadn't heard everyone else say them first, but a much more honest part - deep, deep down - knew that that likely wasn't the case. Memory charms did occur to him, but he had to question whether or not you could obliviate or confund something that didn't technically have a brain in the first place. That doubt was enough to stop him making any such suggestion.
Someone had mentioned something about trick walls, which got Abra thinking. An answer came to him, but all at once he felt too anxious about saying it out loud, in case it was mega stupid. But he had a trick for getting around that which involved being as non-committal as possible: pose the answer as a question. "If the maze walls were charmed to be mirrors," he started off tentatively, and sort of quietly, quite forgetting to put his hand up considering he was a little preoccupied with both his thoughts and his anxieties about said thoughts. "Would that make a difference, confuse it maybe? Or do the mouse-rats not rely so much on what they can see?" How much COULD they see? Or smell? Or think? What was it like to exist as something animated only by magic?
...
Abra's head was starting to hurt. Gaston’s eyes scanned the room for more hands up and landed on Mr. Botros as he spoke up… without raising his hand. He shot him a look as a reminder but didn’t say anything about it. His expression changed to a slight smile as he heard what the boy had in mind. “It could,” he replied, picturing the mirrors described. “It’s entirely possible a mouse could become confused and distracted by seeing its own reflection in the mirrors. Good thinking, Mr. Botros!” Quote:

The answers being given by her classmates were ones she'd considered, too. Truthfully, there were lots of spells that could change the maze, but to figure out how best to challenge the mouse, you'd need to understand the mouse better, yeah? It was Abey's answer, in particular, that made her think of that. "I'd say figure out what sense the mouse relies on most to make it through the maze, and use charms to make that sense harder to use. It'd challenge the mouse and make the maze more difficult to complete. Abe-Abra gave the example of mirrors and sight, and someone else mentioned messing with the cheesecake scent, which would make it harder for the mouse to use its sense of smell." Another mention of sensory deprivation! Miss Botros’s answer got her an approving smile from the professor. “Sensible reasoning, Miss Botros!” he said. “Any form of sensory deprivation is a sure way to cause confusion.” Quote:

Well, Gaston couldn’t blame him; it was a good answer! “Indeed it does,” he replied with a smile. “Very good, Mr. Dooley!” Quote:

She raised her hand ”What about Colloportus, seal off some areas so that they have to take a different route, and add some secret passages and trap doors.” She didn’t think that there was a spell for either secret passages and trap doors. She wasn’t even sure if that would work at all. Gaston was silent for a moment as he envisioned what Miss Primeaux was talking about. She was on the right track, that was for sure! “Those are great ideas, Miss Primeaux,” he said with a smile, “but in order for Colloportus to work, there must be a tangible door in place to close. Our maze has only bare openings in walls, so we would need to create a magical barrier to seal them off.” Quote:

"As for spouting water out, maybe embedding a charm like the Aqua Eructo Charm could work? Then again, can you embed a charm in an object?" she wondered as her mind wandered to newer thoughts. Hmmm.. Gaston beamed as Miss Holden spoke up. “Yes, an extension charm could work,” he said. “Good work, Miss Holden.” He thought she was done, but then she mentioned Aqua Eructo. The sudden shift in thought caught him slightly off guard, but he nodded nonetheless. “You can, but embedding a charm is a complicated process. It involves not only the spell you intend to put in the object but others to attach it and to make the effects appear in a specific set of circumstances.” Quote:

Familar. Remember. Okay. She looked at the maze doubtfully, considering the question as other people's answers washed over her. Bel looked around at the other members of her group, then at the toy mouse in its cage, and then put her hand up. And then right down again since she was about to suggest a mirroring spell to make a mirror maze, but Abra said basically that. Mirror maze woo. Which are GREAT fun, Bel wanted to add. And you know, why not make the maze experience fun for the mouse too? Maybe the mouse would enjoy mirror mazes like she did? She smiled in Abra's direction and frowned a bit trying to think of something else she could add instead.
Uhh....
Uhmmmmm......
She looked down in the maze and then shoved her hand up again. "We could fill the maze with water so that the mouse had to swim?" Would that count as an obstacle? Mice were pretty good swimmers though, weren't they? "And we could put little pontoons in for the mouse to rest on at different intervals... I read somewhere that mice that exercise a lot have more brain neurothingos firing and are better at memory things though so I guess it depends on the mice themselves........ I don't know if that counts for toy mice though." Gaston thought he saw Miss Macindoe’s hand in the air earlier, but when he looked again, it wasn’t there. Now he saw it and called on her. He had to admit, making the mice swim was the most outside-the-box idea he’d heard so far! He beamed. “That’s a very original and well-thought out solution, Miss Macindoe!” he said. “Well done!” Quote:

He knew that some people used shock collars to train their dogs (or used to, anyway), but that had always sounded cruel to him. So, nothing. Instead of speaking up, he just kept quiet and listened. Closely. And took notes, just in case this came in handy later, which he had a feeling it might. Here was another quiet one. That was okay; there would be plenty of time for Mr. Carter to speak up later on if he felt like it. Gaston gave the boy an encouraging smile before moving on.
Gaston's bright blue eyes scanned the room for any more hands in the air. Then he saw none, he addressed the class again, "Well done, everyone! All of your answers were great ideas to challenge our little mouse friends, but only Mr. Kenway and Miss Ben-Ari guessed the spell we'll be working on today: the Confundus Charm. This spell can be used on living creatures or on objects with some degree of sentience, like our enchanted toy mice. Or for a more historical example, this spell was used by Death Eater Barty Crouch, Jr. to trick the Goblet of Fire and enter Harry Potter in the 1994-95 Triwizard Tournament."
He waited a moment to give time for that information to sink in before he went on, "The Confundus Charm will not hurt its target; it simply causes temporary confusion. This can be general or specific to a certain event, depending on the caster's intent. While in this state, the target will be more susceptible to suggestion..."
Gaston gently lifted the blue mouse he'd used for his earlier demonstration out of the cage. "May I borrow your maze again?" he asked Skylar's group. He placed a small piece of cheesecake in the exact same spot he had earlier and set the mouse in the middle of the maze. "Once the mouse is Confunded, he should follow my directions away from the cake," he continued, drawing his wand. "To cast, move your wand in a question mark shape and point directly at the target; the incantation is Confundo. Keep in mind that this spell requires careful concantration." He pointed his wand, making the apporpriate movement. "Confundo!" The blue mouse looked around the maze and squeaked quizzically. "Go on, little guy. This way..." Gaston whispered, gently nudging the mouse in the opposite direction of the cake. When it reached the start of the maze, he picked up the piece of cake and gave it to the mouse. "There we go. Eat up..." It nibbled contentedly as he placed it back in the cage.
He turned back to the class. "Take a few moments to practice the wand movements and incantation to yourselves, but don't cast the Confundus Charm on your mouse yet!" he instructed. "While you're practicing, here's something to ponder: What are the differences between the Confundus Charm and a Memory Charm?" OOC: Sorry for the delay! You have ABOUT 24 HOURS (8:30 AM EST Jan. 27) to answer the next question and/or practice the incantation and wand movements.
