I trust that you all have had a great morning thus far and are ready to learn all about sewing machines and fashion in the muggle world.’’ Here, she paused briefly to survey the room. “This lesson will lead up to a very interesting project but you’ll have to wait until the end of the lesson to hear more about that.’’ There was an impish grin on her face. There was nothing like suspense to keep the kiddos interested. “The first thing I will like to cover before we get started is to give you a few fun facts about the sewing machines. For those of you not familiar with what that is, it is that white and purple apparatus you on your tables.’’ Never fear though! She wasn’t about to spew out a whole lot of facts, just the important ones. Kay moved to the trusty whiteboard. “It was a cabinetmaker by the name of Thomas Saint of England that secured the first patent for a sewing machine in 1790,’’ she told the class while making a note of it. “But it was Singer and Elias Howe that gave us our first modern machine. The latter’s machine allowed persons to cover about 14 hours of work in approximately one hour. It wasn’t until 1899 that the electric sewing machines were invented. “Today, I will be guiding you through the process of setting up your machines. Everything that you will need are there. Now, the first step is already covered which is situating your machine on a flat surface. The next step is inserting the batteries.’’ During this time, Kay had moved to her desk. There was a machine there as well where she would be demonstrating. “The batteries look like this.’’ Hers was held up. “Please note that electricity can also be used. “Next, connect the foot pedal to your machine by inserting the end of the pedal into the designated jack on the sewing machine. If you look closely, there are two jacks. The uppermost one is where the foot pedal connects. The lower one for when electricity is used.’’ The professor demonstrated then waited for everyone else to catch up. “Is everyone following so far? If you have questions or are unclear about the instructions, you may raise your hand when needed.
“Moving on. Place a spool of thread onto the thread spindle which is located on the side of the machine. Then grab the end of the thread and insert it through one of the top holes in the bobbin spool. The end of the thread should now be coming out of the top of the bobbin. Place the bobbin onto the bobbin winder. It should be located near the thread holder that is holding your spool of thread.’’
Kay paused, waiting for any questions and for the kiddos to finish. "Oh, Professor Stewart.... I'm wonderful, thank you for asking." This wasn't a lie or an answer to placate her professor. Liv truly felt the best she has in a while. Just.....nostalgic, perhaps? Ah, that would probably be better received than a straightforward deflection, actually. "Sewing makes me nostalgic for my younger years, is all." With a warm smile, she followed her peers in beginning to put together their sewing machines, which Olivia was already professional status at because.... Well, again, this was what she used to do as a naive First and Second Year. Before the snogging had started and taken over her life, to be quite honest. What was worse was that she had an addictive personality. So, when she really liked something, she'd find herself almost obsessed. A very all-or-nothing attitude from the blonde Gryffindor, but it was just how she was.
WHICH...was how she remembered how to do this sewing business so well. she'd been utterly obsessed with making those Disney princess costumes. As well as all the different makeup tricks... Hm, actually, she had to wonder if that's why they were doing this now. To help with the play since so many of her classmates were joining the acting trope of Hogwarts. Had someone asked Professor Stewart, because she'd missed it.... Hm. Well, anyway.
She had to stop going off on her mental tangents. Juniper had spoken to her, for Merlin's sake. "Oh, thank you so much." Liv shared a bit of a conspiratorial smile with her seat mate. "How are you feeling about your quidditch position?" It was okay to talk and work, yes?....because they were invalids and multitasking wasn't that difficult. "You got Beater, right?" It wasn't a guess...since she'd been more than nosy when she'd first checked out the noticeboard. In fact, she'd checked all the other house before even reading her own. Too nosy to exist, this one was.
Hm, flat surface... Their desk would have to suffice since there were no other options, really. It was flat enough to work on, and Olivia had before, with little issue. So, centering it before her on the desk, she popped the batteries in before finding the pedal. YES, these were her favorite kinds of sewing machines. She'd always felt especially spinster when working one. To be honest, it was great acting prep, too. Taking on a persona with every activity one throws themselves headfirst into. Olivia Lynn Phillips was the absolute master when it came to all that...... and she wasn't too proud to admit she'd learned it from Rooney. .... Moving on.
Instead the foot pedal end into the top-most slot, she fumbled around with the cord to get it on the floor. This would be kinda tricky considering she was so leggy. Hm. Thread next....and the bobbin, which had always been the most challenging part of her, with her fingers being longish. Alas, to thread...thread, she needed a spool of the stuff. Popping over to get one, she jogged back, slipping it easily onto her machine's spindle. Also, it was worth noting she'd almost accio'd one, but this was MUGGLE studies, and Professor Stewart would've had her behind. The Quick Quotes incident hadn't been forgotten... Back at her desk, she cleared her throat. “I’m pleased to see that some of you have managed to complete the instructions and for those of you who could not, don’t worry about it. I’ll go over the steps for you. If you’re still unclear, I’ll help you personally or you can ask your peers. Now, make sure to pay keen attention.’’
Quickly she undid all that she had done on her own machine. “Like before, I’ll do this in steps. Meaning, I’ll complete a step then give you a minute or two to complete the said step before I move on to the next one.’’ She would have given them some more time but they were working with a time constraint here. She had to get the lesson completed by the end of the allotted period.
Making sure to point out what each part of the machine was as they went along, Kay began. “Insert your batteries. This is what they look like.’’ The batteries were held up before she appropriately installed it after which she waited two minutes before proceeding. “Connect the foot pedal to your machine by inserting the end of the pedal into the designated jack on the sewing machine which is the uppermost one.’’ Pause. “Finally, place a spool of thread onto the thread spindle which is located on the side of the machine. Then take the end of the thread and insert it through one of the top holes in the bobbin spool. The end of the thread should now be coming out of the top of the bobbin. Place the bobbin onto the bobbin winder. It should be located near the thread holder that is holding your spool of thread.’’ Kay made sure she delved into this part at a slower pace, taking great care to give the visual. “Go on. You may give it another try.’’
Olivia thought it was wonderful that Professor Stewart was being so patient with them. Sewing was actually kinda hard, if you didn't know what you were doing. So, Liv kept her eyes alert for anyone that might need her help.... if they wanted it?
At any case, it was simple once you got used to the pressure needed for the pedal and the more subtle guidance of whatever fabric you'd be sewing. In fact, she'd waited to pull a bit more thread off the spool, meaning to use the excess to help her artfully guild it into the bobbin. Tried and true, since as she'd mentioned, her fingers were longer. Kinda like claws, if she were to liken them to something... SPOILER!!: This Puffer cutie! Quote:

Bel's bobbin kept spinning and spinning.....
.... and she stared at it in something akin to horror.
The only reason this had caught her eye, was because the small Hufflepuff was sorta viciously pounding her foot down on the pedal... As if this was motocross. Olivia and Juniper had been sitting close by, you see. Stuck between wanting to stick by Juniper and make sure she had everything she needed and helping...Bel (she'd heard the name before), Liv eventually decided to move her butt and help the girl. It would only take a minute, anyway.
Another Hufflepuff was already coming to the rescue, but.... Liv still wanted to check in with her. "Hey, ladies." She greeted them both, but Bel was the focus, obviously. "It'll be frustrating not to go full force." This was coming from a Gryffindor, who knew a thing of two about that.... "Try thinking about riding an actual muggle bike, with pedals. You have to start off slowly to build up momentum. Eventually, you'll be putting the thread into fabric, so it'll have a place to go while you work the pedal. Depending on how good you are at maneuvering the fabric, you'll be able to go a bit faster, but it requires some leading up to, you know?" She smiled at them both.
