Night then turned to the other first year girl who had joined their conversation. "Um, yeah, hi. I'm a first year. I'm Night. Well, Amanda really, but all my friends back in Chicago call me Night."
She thought about the reasons she had to leave America and gave a shudder. Her witch neighbor, Diane, had been the one to tell her all about Ilvermorny. But a few cats had been found dead in the neighborhood, and the following day a mother and baby died in childbirth. Diane's family was found out and imprisoned, even though Night's family had testified in their favor. Diane's last words to Night was that she had to flee, as things were getting bad for wizards in the United States. At that point, Night had already gotten her Ilvermorny letter, and her parents trusted Diane's family for everything about this new world. Diane would have graduated Ilvermorny this year and would have been a great mentor to Night. Diane had previously told Night about the other wizard schools, and her parents were favorable to England. So, she was at Hogwarts.
Holding her right hand out to Night she gave a bright smile and hoped the girl would shake her hand.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Night. I hope it's okay to call you Night, I do hope we will be friends." Emmalyn felt a pang of homesickness when she caught sight of her silver bracelet on her right wrist. The lights of the Great Hall danced upon it as she held her hand out to Night. It was only hours ago that her mother had given her the gift and said her goodbyes.

"Thank you for the tips. I will try my best to make our house proud." Emmalyn flashed her bright smile at Daisy. She wanted to pepper her with more questions. She had so many she wanted to ask, but it was supposed to be a celebration and she didn't want to start off on the wrong foot with her new housemate.
Emmalyn looked up and down trying to see the students that were slowly filling the lengthy table. She noted that a few of the old students wore badges on their robes. From her seat, she couldn't see them well enough to decipher what they meant.
"Does anyone know what those badges on their robes are for?" She simply asked aloud, hoping someone around her would be able to answer.
