Taking off his hat just a second to ruffle his hair, the third year simply gave Zoryn an apprehensive thumbs up - and probably could have done without knowing it was a FULL house because that really just only made him wish Abey were here all the more. They had worked really REALLY hard practicing lines together...and now...
Rubbing his face, Derf gave his surroundings a double, triple really, glance before going to take his position behind the fountain with his lute in hand. Changing up his fingers a bit to play the same two strings the play required for this setting, the Hufflepuff took a few looooooooooong deep breaths and heard the curtain pull open as the lighting changed.
Here we go.....
Clearing his throat, Derf stepped out from his hiding spot behind the fountain and was GLAD to find that the stage lights were bright enough to essentially wash out the audience. Also helped that his feather had fallen in front of his face - even if it was tickling his nose quite a bit. "HiiiiiIigh," he belted out, eyes widening as his voice CRACKED right on cue and cheeks reddened. Fingers even slipped a little on his lute before he recovered them and found their positions on the strings. "....on a hill in an enchanted garden, enclosed by tall walls and protected by strong magic, flowed the Fountain of Fair Fortune."
Breeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaathe, Derfael. Breaaaaaaaathe. "Once a year, between the hours of sunrise and sunset on the longest day, a single unfortunate was given the chance to fight their way to the Fountain, bathe in its waters, and receive Fair Fortune forevermore..." he continued as he side stepped in a bit of a slow motion grapevine across the stage while he continued to light strum on his instrument. Walls began popping up behind him as he moved, as if his footsteps had magical construction abilities. "On the appointed day, hundreds of people travelled from all over the kingdom to reach the garden walls before dawn. Male and female, rich and poor, young and old, of magical means and without, they gathered in the darkness, each hoping that they would be the one to gain entrance to the garden...."
Derf paused here, partly to blow the feather away from his face again as it had continued to insist upon falling in front of his face while he spoke - though thankfully it had never accidentally slipped into his mouth....yet.
Though he did take this pause to fuss a little with his hat and twist it so that it the feather was in the back while he looked out into the audience and continued, slowing down his lute playing just a little. "Three witches, each with her burden of woe, met on the outskirts of the crowd, and told one another of their sorrows as they waited for sunrise...."
