…..Right. “Ha. No, Ronan. Just… no.” And that was all Paul would say on the matter!

Until the lesson was resuming and nightlock was correct.

Also, that next question, about leisurely things to do with her body and clothing, she blinked a moment trying to comprehend what the professor had asked correctly. Making wine? Huh, perhaps she underestimated Ronan a moment, because that was a great idea and something she could definitely get behind, as wine would give the illusion of warmth.

What did painting have to do with survival? And yet, Skylar wasn't the least bit surprised by that suggestion from Hattie, but still...

Meanwhile, Skylar was still considering the question... Leisure, not survival? Yea, perhaps it was one too many late nights, but she was definitely NOT following his thought process. "Make jam?" It kind of could be leisurely, if they stomped on the berries?
Jam. HA! Paul smiled at her. “Well...that’d be yummy. Perhaps I’ll teach you all how to make jam soon. As a FUN lesson.” Not that his lessons were ever NOT fun.

Wine and painting were both pretty good ideas. Jam also wasn't a bad one, but in the first years mind that was more associated with eating. Jam's were good with bread. Which would be a shame, considering if they were stuck foraging she likely wouldn't be able to get her hands on bread.

"Food fight?" some people considered that fun? Didn't they? There were so many cartoons Remy had watched growing up which involved food fights as a general fun activity. That was literally the only idea that came to her mind though.
….Again, riiiiiiight. “A food fight would be….an interesting way to enjoy surviving in the forest on your own, sure!”

Paul chuckled to himself. He wasn’t making fun of the answer; he genuinely thought it was funny!

Maybe Herbology just wasn't his thing. Derf seemed to get himself injured or fainted or crying in almost every lesson Professor Myers held. Couldn't be healthy for his headspace in the long run.

Remaining where she was, Jessa waited for the man to take care of things and move the lesson forward, confident enough that Derf would be fine.

"You could use it to set traps." She offered. Before he thought she'd missed the point, the Ravenclaw would continue her explanation. "Get yourself a bunch of furry little creatures, put 'em somewhere safe for containment and observation. Possibilities are endless. You'd definitely be able to pass the time leisurely--and you'd be able to learn something too."

Didn't get more leisurely than a casual experiment in the woods, y'know?
He was fascinated that Jessa hadn’t said anything about eating said trapped animals. Huh. She was so interesting a child, was she aware? “That’s exactly the answer I would expect from you, Miss Cambridge,” he winked at her.

In the meantime, Myers seemed to be intent on just chugging along with the lesson. So she raised her hand when he asked what they could do with the berries. They were poison right? Wasn't that what he was getting at with his whole story about some dystopian future?

This lesson made no sense.

"You could make a wreath out of them,"
she suggested, raising her hand. That would probably be the last thing she would do if she was out in the wild BUT it was SOMETHING, right?
“Well, sure. That’d make your outdoors home prettier--some decor. Ha HA! Fun idea, m’dear!” he clapped in her direction.

Berries used for survival was still on her mind and it probably was going to be until she named all the options he could.
Paul merely smiled in Steph’s direction, trying to encourage to speak up more, if she wanted to, of course. There wasn’t an issue with silence as long as they were paying attention, and she certainly seemed to be.

"How do you feel?" Natalie asked softly as Myers went on about these weird hunger books. They sounded rather morbid. Her hand went to clasp his free one as a gesture of comfort. "Do you want me to take you to the hospital wing?" she asked in a whisper, once again clearly not paying attention because it was ALL on Derf.

This was becoming a trend.
Natalie seemed to be Derfael’s caretaker, which was fine, of course, but Paul did wonder if her worry was warranted. Derf seemed fine now that he was back to himself. And he hoped she wasn’t missing too much -- until he remembered that this lesson was preeeeeeeeeetty much just a blowaway lesson anyway.

But despite it all, it seems like the Herbologist was being berry consistent with his lesson. What else can they use berries for other than for food? Someone already said to use it as a dye, which is the first thing that came to his mind. Hmm.... oh idea "Professor, we can freeze these berries and use them for a game of marbles or maybe as a fun, edible replacement for gobstones even?" Because the slime from those things was most foul, a berry squirt can be quite yummy.

“Using berries for marbles? You should try that out one day and tell me how it goes, m’boy,” he laughed a little in Tenacius’ direction. Salander always thought outside the box.

Drinking, perhaps?

"Could you dry them to make into a tea, Professor?" Drinking tea was a very British past time.
TEEAAAA! Paul smiled. “Fabulous idea. I’ve been wanting to do a lesson on tea for a few terms now, but I need the right curriculum to fit it into!”

So horrible.

Hunger Games, what in the name of Merlin was that? Maybe she would need to find these books and read them. Was acting like you were dying really appropriate especially with things happening? She simply shrugged it off. She feel like she had already missed to much being in the hospital wing for almost two weeks. Though Slate had taken so very good notes for her while she was away. So without having a clue Juni raised her hand ”Juniper berries?” It was highly doubtful but since they shared the same name she would offer it.

Oh so no NOT juniper berries, nightlock. Yep she was taking notes. Apparently she had missed half of whatever happened to Derf because she was completely confused. Hopefully he hadn’t gotten into of these nightlock berries because that would be bad.

Listening to the others give answers. It was really hard decided what to say. Everything she thought of was more for survival then for leisure. But then again some people find gardening and harvesting plants relaxing apparently. ”You could take the seeds and plant them. Some people enjoy gardening at their leisure, or you can make jewelry with the berries that are not ripe yet since they are a bit harder at first or Tyedye clothes with the juices of the berries.” Okay so maybe she did have a few extra ideas of what to with berries.
BERRY JEWELRY? PAUL LOVED THIS. LESSON IDEAS GALORE TODAY, APPARENTLY. He grinned. “I like the way you think, Juniper.” Plus all these creative ideas were definitely on the right PATH.

But to be fair, he was just mediocre at Herbology and he had plenty of other things on his mind, currently.

His eyes snapped up as a young Slytherin girl started shouting and his eyes soon drifted over to Derfael on the floor. Oh no. Henry stood up from his seat with a start, but remained there as Professor Paul took care of the situation. This seemed to happen nearly every time that he shared this class with all the years. Not that he was unsympathetic - he genuinely was concerned for the boy - but there really seemed to be a pattern.

He seemed to be okay though and Henry slowly sat down as he kept his eyes on the boy, eventually shifting his attention to Professor Paul. Leisure? Uh... Henry thought a moment as he considered some of the other answers being given. He didn't really think of food other than being eaten, but he supposed he could offer something as well.

"I suppose you could play a game with berries, if you need something for entertainment," and leisure, he offered after raising his hand. "Those berries do somewhat resemble gobstones, so you could play a game like that." His mind was often on such games or sports, even when he was distracted, so his coming to that conclusion was probably not a big surprise.
Similar to what Tenacius said….Paul smiled. “You and Tenacius start a club--an edible game club--” and then...he remembered Henry was graduating, and his face fell, slightly.

NooooOOOOoo! Not his PREFECT. His HEAD BOY. He could CRY right here and right NOW. He wouldn’t, but he could. He cleared his throat and blinked a lot.

Something else to focus on than fainting people.

As for the posed question, her first thought had actually been to use the berries as a lure to something more substantial for food but Myers had mention for ideas to be more…fun. Besides Jessa her younger housemate had already followed that thought. “Dying our clothes perhaps…” Cass offered as another idea that came to mind. Clothes had specifically been brought up in the talk of the activity after all so it had potential.

DYING CLOTHES WAS ANOTHER BRILLIANT IDEA. ALL THE FUN FOOD IDEAS FOR PRACRICAL NON-EDIBLE USE. “Heh. I like that, Cassie!”

She raised her hand after a while, "could use 'em to poison your enemies." It was survival AND leisure. 'Cause in Zoryn's most humble opinion, there was nothing better than destroying her enemies, especially if that enemy was one Paulette Myers. But, like, no offense or anything.

Actually, all the offense.

“Zoryn Spinnet.” Paul’s smile had faded, slightly, and he eyed her sternly. “If I thought you were being legitimate -- and that’d be another problem altogether, let’s face it -- I wouldn’t mind that much. But you’re not taking my class seriously. Now, nor have you ever.” He breaaaaathed. He wanted to tell her to leave. But then, he wondered about his bias. He was irritated with her. He felt cross with her, and he didn’t want that to cloud his vision. Soo….he let her stay. For now.

“I don’t think I would find that activity very leisurely.”

And right now? He just wanted to get away from the group a little bit more...maybe off to the side with Natalie who was always close by and he appreciated it and who he took shook his head at about the hospital wing. "No hospital wing," he mumbled, using one of his hands to ruffle his hair. His attention was then briefly brought to Isa. "Yeah, I'm alright," he nodded, giving Natalie's hand a tug to move with him a little more away from people and off to the peripherals of things.

As for the question about berries...Derf could only think about eating them right now...or using them as food for creatures. But his mind was far too scrambled at the moment for any sort of proper speech outside of the reassurance of his being a-okay and thus remained quiet.
He looked upon Derfael for another second before nodding. “Okay. I’ll check with you after class to see if you’re feeling all right. Okay?” he also wanted to..perhaps speak to his parents about things, not that he thought on it.

A letter was in order.

Paul was glad he tacked on that ‘and boys’ at the end, because yes, child, yes. “Makeup that you can eat? Lick off your lips? Sounds like fun,” he said with a smile.

“Maybe we could use them to make juice?” Etta wasn’t sure if someone had suggested this already but it was all she could think of. The prefect waited for class to move on, wondering what they were going to learn today. Something interesting, she hoped.

The responses to the questions all seemed to be going well, so why did he have to answer as well? He'd be good just pretending to listen and work on whatever was given. He still didn't understand why all this muggle stuff was so important. Who cared about some hunger games, unless the muggle version was less humane, then it might make it cooler.
Aaaaaaaand Eddie was quiet, as usual. Paul, again, hoped he was listening.

And this question was right up her alley. Or at least she knew a good answer. The blonde beamed as she put her hand up into the air. Isa was distracted from answering the first question by Derf’s fainting. Was he okay? Derf never seemed comfortable in herbology in general, and Isa was concerned for her friend. She moved closer to him and leaned down. ”Derf? How are you feeling?” Hopefully he would feel enough to get up.

Once she had ascertained that Derf would be alright, Isa shifted her focus back to the lesson. Looked like the berries were nightshade, also known as atropa belladonna. Of course Jessa’s dramatic death by nightshade wasn’t necessarily an accurate portrayal of the exact effects of nightshade poisoning, it was fun nonetheless. ”One of the symptoms of nightshade poisoning is hallucinations.” Fun fact of the day about deadly nightshade. Nasty stuff, deadly nightshade. Isa had been taught not to eat certain poisonous plants from a young age. She had read books about poisonous plants too. In general it was a good idea not to eat random plants you found in the wild unless you were absolutely one hundred percent sure that it was a safe plant. There were plenty of poisonous plants that didn’t produce berries out there, like water hemlock, but berries were more common in cases of accidental poisoning. It was all too easy for small children to mistakenly eat berries that turned out to be poisonous.

Oooh, what other uses were there for berries? Mostly Isa just ate berries, but there were other uses for berries too. ”Many berries can be used to make dye or ink, if you crush the berries.” Isa had tried making ink from berries before. Mashing up berries in the berry ink making process was fun. Making jam was fun too, but professor Myers had asked about non-eating uses, and making jam probably counted as eating the berries. Would they be learning more about safely foraging for food today? Or was this lesson taking a turn towards uses for different plants? She would just have to wait and see. Foraging off the land, hmm. That sounded like it would be fun. ”Professor, are we going to learn how to identify which plants are safe to eat in the wild?” Seemed like the sort of thing that might come up in the lesson. For now she would just have to wait and see.

As usual, Isa spewed out answers like a bloody textbook, and all Paul could do was smile in her direction. She and Hattie took the cake, though, for what the lesson would be about. Not the identifying part, but the making “inks” of sorts from it. And dye. Someone else had said it, too, so kudos to them all!

“Well, yes. We will be making NATURAL PAINTS from our planty friends. Mostly using berries..some other shades may come into play, though. I’ve got a color chart ALLLLL drawn up. I know we were focusing on night shade----which we were, but I wanted to...sort of have an excuse to do THIS lesson. In the book where nightlock makes an appearance...they would have to paint using these techniques.” Like, he knew this was stretching. But Paul Myers, in this moment, did not care.

“SOOOO your first task to forage for these berries that you may want to use for your paints. CHERRIES. RASPBERRIES. BLACK BERRIES. NIGHT LOCK. MULBERRIES.” He grinned. I will put my color guide on the board so you know what berries you want to forage for in order to create the shades you want. I also have some buckets of----” And Paul waved his wand, the buckets became NOT invisible. They’d been out of the way, no worries there. “Flour, ginger, turmeric, paper, and some brushes. In the books, if we were in the WILD...we wouldn’t have brushes. But of course, we’ll use them today. Or you can use your fingers.” He grinned. “I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re going to use nightshade, but yeah. You will be able to mix any of these shades as well to create NEW shades. Turmeric and ginger will add some different depths to your colors!” he wiggled his fingers playfully. He took the color chart from his pocket and unfolded it.

“While you all forage, I’ll be writing the directions on how to MAKE the paints. Yes? Yes! OKAY GO!”

Quote:

OOC: So I have the directions, I just didn't want a colossal post. Start posting your character figuring out which berries they want to create colors with or just use on their own. There is no limit. Let your character do as they please. There are baskets to collect the berries in. I'll be posting the directions sometime later tonight/tomorrow morning and then you all have the rest of the time to mix the paint and CREATE SOMETHING COOL. Well, your character. Lol. Play with each other...have conversations...wooh hooooooh! I had fun finding all the colors to match the shades xDD Obviously, the hex codes aren't a part of the IC list xD Just in case y'all wanted to know OOC wise.

Thanks, guys! I'm in the midst of finals, so if this lesson feels loosey- and a little more distant than usual, that is why! Forgive me! I love you all <3 Thanks for always entertaining me and making me feel sane after busy, stressful days. *hugs*
