What?

"That we not share our gift with them?"

??????????

"If muggles can't do magic, we can't really share it with them. Like no offense, but you can't really use magic if it's not in your genes. Plus you'd probably go to Azkaban since it's against the law." In which case, yeah, maybe Professor Stewart should try. Mhm. Then they wouldn't have to take this disastrous class anymore 'cause their teacher would be in prison. Yeah, good idea.

"WHAT!? Absolutely not!" And no, he wasn't talking about the point loss either, 'cause been there done that. No, he was talking about that 'share our gift' talk. What was it with people wanting to break the Statue all of a sudden?! Had some people lost their ever loving minds?! "The Statue of Secrecy was created for a very good reason. The Muggles had begun to arrest, try, and kill those who were suspected of withcraft and when the Ministry of Magic tried to reason with the Muggle government for protection under Muggle law, they were refused. This led to the writing and signing of the International Statue of Wizarding Secrecy. Also, it should be noted that a famous supporter of repealing the Statue was Grindelwald. Not that Professor Stewart had asked for all that information, but he felt that it needed to be said. "If we 'share our gift', as you so put it, it almost certainly lead to the witch trials starting again." And here we go with this argument again.

Sigh.

Also, not an idiot, just very opinionated.

She liked being right, especially when she had already known she was right. Moving on though, she didn't really think they should share their gift. Partly because of some of the reasons Ronan was saying. "I'd have hoped muggles might have moved on from wanting to kill people that are different..." She mused with a little shrug. She knew enough though to know that they probably hadn't. Which was why she didn't think they should share their gift.

"If we try to share our gift.... the muggles will want us to do everything for the, and the wizarding world could potentially just turn into a population of servants for the muggle world" The blonde murmured as she put her hand up into the air. "I'm all for helping, but us sharing out gift is a little bit too far." And actually thinking about it. She didn't really like it being discussed as a gift. "I also don't think it's a gift. Someone didn't chose to make me a witch. It's part of who I am.... not a gift. Not something I could chose to give to someone else..." and then she kind of just trailed off and shut up.

"Absolutely not." The Ravenclaw's voice was firm, if not appalled at the Professor's question. Blue eyes immediately darted across the room to Kitty, knowing she would have a field day with a topic like this one and it left the girl completely hfsvkzfugveso.

"We've been talking about this ALL TERM, Professor and I mean no disrespect but it's a terrible idea to keep bringing it up in light of everything that's been happening around the school so I won't be offering up an actual response when I've already done so--we've all already done so and ended up in heated debates and more conspiracies about Kitty working with the cult. Discussions like these don't help that and it makes me uncomfortable to think we have to keep considering such a heinous idea, especially when there's clearly someone moving about the castle trying to get us to do exactly what is being discussed now."

Her stomach did an uneasy flip as she thought about it, as she listened to everything that could go wrong with sharing their magic and Kitty trying to justify it all, the only thing Jessa really wanted to do was leave. There had been enough talk about this, she didn't wanna hear anymore.

Had Ronan not use the I word he would come to his housemate's defense. But really at this point he was just wishing the Professor would just chalk this up to another appointment at the detention block. Or have him do the entire school's dishes after dinner--appropriate given their lesson 'no?

But then the Professor dropped that question, and Tenacius just sat with his mouth slightly ajar, as if that helps verify the question that entered his ears. That totally came out of left field there innit? They went from housework and genderfication to questioning the Statute that has kept the Magical and Muggle worlds largely separate.

But ok here they go again, passionate opinions was the dish of the day innit? He too felt strongly about this, but he held his tongue for a bit, as there were plenty of thoughts racing in his mind, mostly that his family-- on both sides of the magical divide-- made their fortune on getting around and exploiting stifling laws like the Statute. So technically the Astors were already "$haring" their gift, provided that the Statute stayed in place.

But yeah he cant say that in this class. No matter how paradoxical his core beliefs are to the rest of his clan, a tattler he wasnt. So instead he opted to diffuse the tension in the air with this "But Professor, Muggles already have magic in their lives--every heard of Disneyland? Its the 'Most magical place on Earth' they said. Although some would argue that Las Vegas fits that description better." he chuckled. "In any case, they got something called Technology, its not quite as capable as our magic but eh its close enough."

Natalie SIGHED and raised her hand. "Professor, muggles hire maids a lot to clean their houses. That's what house elves do for us, so no, they don't really need magic." Could they drop it now?

Remy was confused. Then again, she was a muggle born so she had gone all of her life up until this year without magic. It really wasn't that hard...

"I don't think it's that big of a deal Professor," she piped up, tilting her head to the side. "Like don't get me wrong, magic is aaaammmaaaziiiiiiinnnnngggg". The blonde had to add that because it definitely was.

Time to go into the point she was trying to make before that though.

"But, I think that being a muggle isn't that bad. And it probably takes a bit longer without magic, but the trade off is that technology is continuing to develop and making it even easier. Like we have a Roomba, which means we don't have to vacuum ourselves at home and it's even set on a timer so we actually don't even have to think about it like you would if you used a spell instead, because you'd still have to cast it." She was out of breath now, taking a deep breath in because her rambling had gotten in the way of her breathing.

Her eyes drifted back to the list on the Blackboard to see if she could spot anything else technology could do and muggles didn't have to think about.

"You can also get electronic feeders and water bowls for animals. The water bowls can have plumbing and fill up automatically, but you'd still need to check the feeders to make sure there's enough food in it." Everything else on that list still had to be done by a person. Some of them sucked a lot.

But it wasn't amazing that people did that. Millions of people did those things every day.

He seemed stupid.

"That was also in a time before most muggles weren't protected under the law" she pointed out, civil rights movement people. Didn't they learn anything about that in the wizarding community?

"Also the attitudes that existed in the time of witch trials aren't as prevalent now. Muggles accept the paranormal and the existence of magic these days. Like, back then they would've given up their own children. My parent's haven't tried to kill me after finding out I was a witch."

"Also that's a slippery slope argument, meaning it's logically flawed."

With that done, she settled back into her seat quite pleased with herself. She did however still believe that magic didn't need to be shared.

What a disappointment. There was once a time when Kay thought exactly like her students. “While I appreciate your concerns and thoughts, I’d like for you all to take some time to think it over. Both the mundane and magical worlds have progressed as Ms Beaumont has said. I am sure there will be more of them willing to accept what was not accepted so many years ago.’’ This was all she had to say on the subject since Kay had just wanted to voice her own thoughts. At least her students now knew where she stood on the matter.

SPOILER!!: Hello, silence! ^_^

Sam blinked. And blinked some more.

Sure, she should expect some provocative questions in class; she was a NEWTs level student now. They were mean to bring their own ideas and thoughts to the table. But that sounded awfully a lot like the same tone as the words she'd apparently been chanting in the Room of Requirement that day. When someone had used magic to control her...to make her say things...to curse people.

She couldn't concentrate on the discussion going around her, suddenly feeling quite nauseous. Could they just get on to the practical already?

If discussions like this hadn't been snuffed out like burning candles in the past...basically Derf was in agreement with Jessa whose voice was sorta the only one he heard at the moment given the comfort in familiarity it brought. He also...really was not keen on the professor's choice of wording and the third year's attention hung there specifically for a time. Her word choice, tone, it sorta implied only one correct answer, didn't it? And in light of everything that had happened so far this term...provoking them into a debate (which he fully expected to get shut down again) just seemed like rubbing salt into everyone's still VERY raw wounds.

So it was that Derf stayed quiet and instead busied his fingers with his robes, knotting the dark fabric around his fingers tightly as a reflection of his discomfort. Of all the topics to force a hand in speaking about the Statute...cleaning seemed so insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

As for the next question ... Do you not think that muggles deserve to have magic in their lives? That we not share our gift with them? Well, her classmates answered it pretty well and while Muggle Studies Professors were notoriously loony, this was just off-the-charts? With everything that had been going on this term .... unless... those letters that Vance prophesied about? Wait, no... Tilting her head to study Stewart a moment, the fifth year found herself staring in confusion. How did one know if someone was under the imperius curse? Or if the staff had been compromised?

Her thoughts elsewhere around the castle happenings, Skylar found herself unable to focus on forming a coherent response to the question.

Uncomfortable looks were not ones that were easily missed. Kay saw them on a few faces and knew this was a sign to move on with the lesson.

“Alright, class. Let’s get started on today’s practical. Many of you have already guessed it- you’ll have a chance to do a few chores without magic. What I’d like you to do is to pick a station, be it the sink or the tubs to wash a piece of clothing or one of the others. I assure you, those are not my clothing or dishes. Simply think of it as helping the house elves with a bit of their work. Go ahead and do so now, please, but ensure not to many of you crowd one station. You’ll find all the necessary materials there needed to complete whichever chore you choose to do.’’

OOC: Heya! Soooo, this should be fun, right? Anywho, have your charries choose one of the chores to do: washing dishes/ clothing/ dishes, cleaning the stove/ oven, mopping, sweeping. You guys have until Friday 24 November at 10 PM EST.
