Natalie was relieved to hear that the giant squid wouldn't let Derf convince him to bring him down to the bottom of the lake. Derf was smart and he could probably find a way to make it work, but Natalie wasn't gonna risk losing her best friend.
She smiled at the friendly squid. "Thanks, Mister Bartholomew. It was nice to meet you." She gathered her books back up, figuring that the beast of the lake had some other things to attend to. Who knew what the legislature of the lake was? She didn't. Maybe he was the boss because he was so big.

Bartholomew Henry was relieved to see that he had relieved the girl. Yes, he would make sure that this Derf didn't get into any danger underwater. If he was wise, he would stay away from the bottom of the lake entirely. It was one thing to go for a nice swim in the water, and another to go way out into the depths. Hopefully he wouldn't be trying gillyweed.
"It was nice to meet you too, Natalie! I will certainly say hello to the mermaids for you if I see any." And with one last wave of his tentacle, he was off.
