But she certainly had it out for him, and it had not gone unnoticed by Paul, which is why being woken in the night by her was not....going to pleasant. For either of them.
He raised a skeptical eyebrow at her first excuse. "How would a creature ever have-----" And he was cut off by the NEXT bewildering statement, which only had Paul WIDENING his eyes at her in disbelief. "I...cannot believe....you are out of bed in the night in my office." Well, not IN his office, but very nearly. His voice was low, cold, and calculatingly slow. "You are a wonderful student. I feel....I feel disappointed. And especially after that hawk showed up at the bulletin board?! This is very suspicious behavior, Miss Sparkes, indeed. I would like an explanation...or would you rather me awaken Professor Marchand tonight and explain to him that one of his lions very nearly broke into my office?" He gave her a look with his blue eyes. Because why else would she be sneaking round his meeting space alone?
Yeah, don't wake a sleeping Paul. He was not amused. The professor folded his arms across his chest.
If it was anyone else....... He knew. He knew he wouldn't be nearly as irritated. Plus, the girl was full of centaur dung at the moment! CENTAUR DUNG.
Professor Myers's voice was way colder and meaner than she would've expected, even if she had KNOWN beforehand that she'd be caught. Emmeline fidgeted with the free sleeve of her robes a bit as she listened to allll of his talking, trying desperately to think of a way to tell the truth WITHOUT telling him the part that would be hurtful if he wasn't a Dark wizard. Which was suuuuper hard, but by the time he'd stopped talking, she'd started crying a little. Definitely not on purpose, but whenever her father had used that sort of tone, it had been followed by....unpleasantness.
Plus, it was making her kind of doubt her whoooole reason for being here, you know? If he was a Dark wizard, wouldn't he have just cursed her to shut her up already or something? So the second year was very sad, a little scared, and VERY confused.
She tried to wipe her eyes all sneakily 'cause she didn't want him to think she was crying
on purpose -- which she DID know how to do, to be fair -- and replied veeeerry quietly,
"I--I'm sorry, sir. But I ju-just th-thought that, you know, you have lots of sand in here and stuff. And it would be really ea-easy for whoever drew the thing at the bulletin board to bury lo-lots of rodents here..." Which was pretty much the truth of the matter. 'Cept she'd thought that maybe HE'D been the one doing the burying, mhm. But she made suuuuper sure that none of that suspicion showed through in her tone. She'd been practicing putting different emotions in her voice on purpose 'cause she was gonna try out for the play, so hopefully she could also do it in reverse (take emotions OUT of her voice)??
But really, one of the main thoughts Emmeline had as she stared at the ground with red, embarrassed, tear-streaked cheeks was that she should've asked Derf to help her make the plan. He was definitely the most creative person in her group of friends, mhm... But she'd been SO sure that she could look through the office at night without bothering anyone.
