It kinda figured that they would be doing some divination related to animals today, since they were in the barn and everything, but some of the things being mentioned Ronan hoped they weren't doing. Mainly, the ones involving animal droppings and the like. And someone (Derfael) had mentioned even tasting the droppings, which sent his gag reflex right to the edge. WHO ON EARTH WOULD DO SUCH A THING?! EW! *gag*
It took him a few minutes to recover, but once he did, he remembered something. "Sometimes people study animals' actions in order to tell when there's going to be bad weather or even an earthquake. There's even a day built around that idea in America called Groundhog Day. They watch this groundhog called Punxsutawney Phil come out of his burrow and if he sees his shadow, it means there will be six more weeks of winter." Which he had always thought was silly. Wouldn't there be all kinds factors that would come into play? Like the sun's position in the sky, or whether it was cloudy that day?
