Joy nodded approvingly as the house-elf agreed to have someone look at his bruises. Her eyes widened at his next statement. "Oh," she said, awkwardly. "Please don't feel like you owe me anything. I was just trying to help!"

Then, a thought crossed her mind, and her cheeks turned pink. What had she been thinking? Telling a house-elf she had been exploring? How cruel! She knew that house-elves couldn't explore like she could. They had to work all day. Oh, now she felt bad. She decided to keep her mouth shut about these things from now on.

"Well..." she continued slowly and carefully, in response to Toddles' question. "I've only been exploring because I'd like to find my way around as soon as possible. I've only been to a few places. Like... er... the kitchens, the Great Lake, and the old battlements."

She stopped before she could say anything more. She didn't want to upset Toddles.
