~ A History of Valentine ~ Early Years: Kitty was born in Glasgow Scotland, the daughter of a Muggle man named Aaron and a rich witch named Emily. She grew up with quite a lot of luxury. They lived in a large mansion surrounded by exotic plants and filled with books and all sorts of muggle devices. Most of Kitty's possessions were Muggle made and she knew about the Muggle world more than she did the magical one. That is not to say that she was ignorant of the magical world - aside from what her mom told her their library was supplied with magical books and they were often visited by reporter friends of her mom.
Romania: Emily Valentine continued to be active in journalism while she raised Kitty. Her contract required her to move to Romania to do some reporting on the government there. She and Kitty had to stay at an apartment complex, something which annoyed Kitty at first (having become so accustomed to the joy of living in a large mansion.) While in Romania Emily decided to enroll Kitty in a wizarding "pre-school" of sorts. Kitty studied for one year at a school in Romania. At Romania Emily bought her a black cat for Kitty to keep as a pet. While at school she was extremely shy, but she found herself attracted to the Gothic sub culture. She also got disgusted by her middle name (Dugray) and decided to change it to Darkness, much to the chagrin of her mother. She befriended two of the house elves, but was bullied by some of the other students who thought she was stuck up just because she was rich. After one year was over they moved back to Scotland - just in time for Kitty to begin her first real year of wizarding school.
First Year: Kitty's first year at Hogwarts passed without major incident. She devoured Hogwarts A History and soon became very interested in a mysterious Tapestry on the fourth floor near the library. A paper she had discovered inside Hogwarts A History suggested a dark past for the Tapestry. It was an exciting mystery but Kitty wouldn't find the answer of the mystery until her next year. She didn't make any friends but it was a much better experience than her time at Romania. The main reason why she didn't make friends during this term was because of her natural shyness - shyness which began to wear off as the term was coming to a close. The first time she truly came out of her shell was at a Ravenclaw slumber party held the day before the feast. Then at the feast she got into a friendly conversation with The Grey Lady, who complimented her nail polish.
Second Year: The second year of Hogwarts began with a bang. Kitty became friends with several of her fellow Ravens right away. There was Julie, who convinced her to drop the "Darkness" and to use her proper middle name. Shortly after the feast Julie became the first person she talked to about her interest with the Tapestry on the fourth floor. Then there was Hadley (Haddie) Denaker, a spirited first year Raven who had a knack for mischief. During the Star of Term feast Kitty got drawn into a food fight with Haddie against the Gryffindor's, which resulted in the feast being ruined for everyone when one of the teachers caused it to rain over the entire hall. They both lost ten points from Ravenclaw and were sentenced to clean the library. (Which Peeves interrupted by starting a food fight of his own.)
Another close friend was Esme Darcy, a Hufflepuff girl who Kitty first met on the pathways on a sunny day. When Kitty informed her that she was going to visit Professor Ursula Black (a Hag who was the Divination teacher); it was Esme who strongly warned against it. Despite her reputation of being a worrier, Kitty couldn't believe that the staff would hire a dangerous person. Esme turned out t be right: When Kitty dropped by for a visit it was to find Ursula trying to eat fellow Ravenclaw Rooney, and the two of them barely got away with their lives. Kitty would have gone straight to the headmistress but the other students were already leaving to take their first lesson with Professor Black - right next to a burning cauldron. Kitty disguised herself in gray clothes and observed the class from behind a rock, planning to get help if the Hag tried to harm anyone. Unfortunately, Professor Black's pet crow noticed Kitty, and before Kitty knew it she was being dragged towards the cauldron. Hadley stood up and demanded the Hag let Kitty go, but the Hag responded by dragging her over to the cauldron with Kitty. The situation escalated and soon the Hag had bewitched half the class, (including freezing Hadley and Kitty) and was throwing a Hufflepuff boy (Brady) into the cauldron. The teachers arrived just in time to save everyone, but the Hag escaped into the woods. Kitty's nightmares about her continue to this day.
Thankfully not everything was so scary at Hogwarts. Kitty got ahead in many of her classes and eventually overcame much of her initial shyness. Her best classes were Muggle Studies and History of Magic. The Dueling Club semed like it would be scary at first, but aside from a minor injury during her second duel; it turned out to be great fun and a way to make friends. Hadley invited Kitty to the Room of Requirement for a hide and seek party hosted by their awesome prefect Penelope.
The case of the Tapestry continued to occupy Kitty's mind. She recruited a first year Slytherin mischief maker (Mason Stevens) to investigate the mystery of the Tapestry. Kitty thought a book on the Tapestry would be found in the Forbidden Section of the library; and Mason got the brilliant idea to use an aging potion to sneak in at early morning. Mason wrote to her grandfather for some of the ingredients and Kitty got the rest from the kitchen. Then they met up in an abandoned bathroom and successfully brewed and drank the potion. It was all very epic but it turned out the Forbidden Section was locked and they weren't able to get in. Kitty did eventually learn the secret of the Tapestry when she asked Professor Ansley (History of Magic.) He told her how it had been used to protect a powerful magic book called The Book of Mysteria from a dark wizard named Voltemortist. Curiosity satiated, Kitty shared the news with Mason victoriously.
Near the end of the term, Kitty and Rachel Watson (a Ravenclaw friend) plotted to visit Professor Draper and get permission to bring their pets to Hogwarts. Kitty had nine pet worms and Rachel had a Jack Russell Terrier. Unfortunately Rachel wasn't allowed to bring her puppy but luckily Kitty was allowed her worms.
The school year ended like it had begun. Right in the middle of the feast Peeves and his girlfriend Miffy (who had been causing all sorts of trouble that year to impress Peeves) bombarded the Ravens with feathers and paint. Outraged at the destruction of her makeup, Kitty challenged Miffy to a duel. Luckily cooler heads prevailed and Kitty was sent back to her seat.
Third Year: Kitty couldn't wait to rejoin her friends at Hogwarts for her third year. Duing summer vacation she and her parents visited America and Kitty took some classes in a journalism school. While shopping for school supplies in Diagon Alley Kitty met up with Elsa (a Slytherin friend she had met at the end of last term) and got the pleasure of giving her fashion advice on what clothes to wear. She also met up with Mason they talked about their shared experience of living in a rich family.
Classes continued to be a source of endless wonder and fun. Kitty continued to be active in the Dueling Club, though she won no duel. During Herbology the class was shrunk like in Alice in Wonderland, and Care of Magical Creatures featured Kruppies. Kaysha Stewart, the Muggle Studies teacher soon became Kitty's favorite teacher. Kitty had lots of questions about the Statute, which was a law that Kitty believed had passed its usefulness and should be repealed. Stewart understood Kitty's dislike of having to keep her identity secret. Unfortunately Kitty embarrassed herself in front of her other favorite teacher (Ansley), though no one could blame her. It turned out she had been under the influence of a zombifying spell:
Music and a mysterious green light lured several students into the Forbidden Forest. The students who heard the music became temporarily brainwashed, lumbering around the castle in search of different objects and only being able to repeat fragmented, confused sentences. Kitty was one of them, and she and several of the others wrecked havoc across Hogwarts - interrupting lessons and annoying their fellow students everywhere. The music tasked Kitty with finding rose thorns and Moonstone powder. Moonstone powder she had no luck with, but a Gryffindor student gave her his rose thorns in exchange for coming with him to the hospital wing. When the spell wore off neither Kitty nor any of the others had any memory of what they had done. It was all very embarrassing and more than a little creepy.
But that would not be the only creepy thing to happen that year. Ursula Black, the Hag who had haunted Kitty's nightmares for a year, was back, and in the courtyard. She had been the one behind sending the students to get objects for her. She grabbed Kitty and Brady (who she had thrown into the cauldron last year) and dragged them off to the forest. This time Kitty went with Brady into the cauldron, and they both became very close to being Hag food! Several teachers and students chases Ursula into the woods and freed Kitty and Brady, along with arresting Ursula.
Kitty was sad to say goodbye to both Professor Kitridge and Penelope, who was graduating that year. She promised to keep in touch and agreed to take care of her living pet rock, who used to be cared for by the Grey Lady.
Emily and Aaron could not have been prouder when they found out Kitty had been appointed prefect. Deep down she's scared of disappointing the staff by not being a good enough prefect, but she will try her absolute best to make them happy, and to honor Penelope.
~ Personality ~
Kitty is very self aware - she rarely goes out anywhere in public without a lot of Gothic make up and dark clothes. She loves Muggles. Her self awareness has made her shy about making mistakes in front of people, and she sometimes imagines that she is being judged even when she is not. This does not mean that she is mean or judgmental, she is actually quite nice and is very loving to her friends and with most people.
