Still, she was curious about why they were getting prizes (maybe the professor was just really in the holiday spirit???) but wouldn't stress over it. With her cookie finished, Althea could now focus on the task at hand. The fifth year looked at the stack of paper, even went and touched them, flipping through a few. Strange. She wasn't entirely sure about her answer, but she raised her hand anyway. "Are we using them to make decorations?" It was the only thing she could think of considering how everything was heart-shaped around the classroom. Maybe they were doing some arts and crafts project that involved folding.

Like.. yes, that was a possibility but she hoped that wasn't so. Please, nope.

"Like Althea mentioned, decorations? Since the papers are coloured and the room seems to be filled with paper hearts so.. I can't think of anything else." She answered honestly, absently playing with the edge of a coloured sheet. They were probably going to learn to make decorations with magic.. hm. Awesome.

Or maybe they were making those paper chain decorations out of this paper? Hmmmmm.

He raised his hand. "Are we making valentine's for people? Or maybe paper decorations?" he suggested.

Miss Kenning’s hand was the first Gaston saw, and he called on her. “Excellent guess, Miss Kenning!” he said with a slight smile. And very nearly correct too! “You’re on the right track.”

Not long after, Miss Kramer spoke up and echoed Miss Kenning’s answer. The professor nodded, listening as she explained her reasoning. “Very sound reasoning, Miss Kramer,” he replied.

And it seemed Mr. Westwood was thinking along the same lines, though he also mentioned valentines. The answer earned a smile and a nod from the professor. “We are,” he said, “but not just any valentines…” But more on that soon… He flicked his wand at the bowl on his desk and levitated a revealer toward each of the Hufflepuffs.

She BEAMED at Dora Umbridge when the girl came to sit down. ”Nah uh,” she shook her head, patting the seat next to her. ”I was saving it just for you!” Sort of. Well, not really BUT had she known the girl was about to walk in, then maybe she would’ve done so. It’d be nice to have some extra help if she needed it. Hopefully Dora would be willing. Mhm.

Once Professor M began addressing the class, Zoryn turned her attention to the front of the room. ”Are we making paper airplanes???? ‘Cause that’d be SUPER fun!! Not exactly fireworks, but like the next best thing maybe!!!

Now here was an answer Gaston hadn’t been expecting! He couldn’t help but chuckle a bit as Miss Spinnet mentioned paper airplanes. He could always count on her to think outside the box! And the idea made sense, he had to give her that. “Not exactly, Miss Spinnet,” he said, “but that’s a very fun idea!” And a fun idea like that deserved a reward! He levitated a revealer toward the girl.

She snickered at Olivia's comparison of the room to the obnoxiously coloured medication. "Tastes better though!" And for emphasis she took a bite of her tart. They were probably her most favourite thing in the entire world. She'd eat them all day if she wasn't so practical, level-headed and didn't know that she'd become sick and likely grow to hate it--which would have been the real tragedy here.

Her attention returned to the Professor when he addressed the room. They could keep stuff and the stack of paper served a purpose.

Well then. Last time there was a stack of papers, it wasn't particularly spectacular. "We're not gonna be doing more word searches are we?" There were only so many of those before her brain stopped functioning and required a different stimuli.

Really, one in a work was plenty enough.

Here was another outside-the-box idea! Gaston blinked in slight confusion and shook his head. “No, no word searches today, Miss Cambridge,” he replied. The activity he had in mind was a bit more hands-on than a word search, and hopefully more fun too!

Miss Awning was being awfully quiet. Oh well, that was okay. Gaston reasoned she probably didn’t have a guess that hadn’t already been said… either that or she was too distracted by the things around her.

Come to think of it, Miss Umbridge seemed a little distracted too. The professor noticed her shrug. Maybe she’d have something to say later?

It seemed that Shay's other question, was also the professor's first question of the day. What was the colored paper for? Something immediately popped into her mind, but it seemed that she wasn't the only one with that idea. Shay agreed with Noelle. Certainly they must be making valentines, but with a twist. Since the talking valentine idea had already been mentioned, Shay went with plan B.

Raising her hand, Shay took her answer a little further. "I think we are making valentines for sure, but not ordinary ones. Maybe these can be charmed to change color or...........maybe the message can be invisible until the person the valentine is intended for reads it." Just a thought.

She turned to glance at Noelle who slumped in the seat next to her. Olivia raised a concerned eyebrow, wondering if her friend was alright. She'd ask later...

A Valentine's revealer? Prizes? MORE chocolate? wondered Olivia. Hmm... She was intrigued. She sat up a little straighter in her chair and then listened to Professor Marchand ask about the stacks of paper. Decorations... Word searches. Origami prizes?
She shot a special smile to Ace who was sitting a little bit aways and then she heard Vivian's answer. Charmed love letters? Her face almost turned a bright shade of pink at the very thought of that. When she heard Vivian's response, she almost chuckled. Heh. Nice one Vivi. She sent a quick thumb's up in the Slytherin's direction.

"Professor, I agree with Noelle on the idea of magical valentines. Perhaps they're valentines cards that deliver themselves or have an invisible message written inside of it?Or when you read the message the card turns into tiny hearts when you touch it?" she said with her eyes widening with excitement. NOW that would be an awesome idea. The ideas were just starting to build in her head. Possibilities!

Here was an answer Gaston hadn’t heard yet! He listened intently as Miss Morrison mentioned color-changing valentines and invisible messages. He smiled. “Both are very good guesses, Miss Morrison!” he said. Not quite what they were doing today, but still great ideas! Another flick of his wand sent a revealer to the Gryffindor girl.

Miss Holden also mentioned invisible messages but also added a few ideas of her own, and what creative ideas she had too! “Now that would be a very creative use of magic indeed!” he said with a smile, levitating another revealer toward her.

Even the hot cocoa smelled divine. She waved at the professor and went to take a slumped over seat next to Olivia.

Looking at the paper next to her, she figured with the holiday, they would probably be making valentines. Her hand went halfway up because effort. "Making Valentines? Maybe they speaking? Like howlers but... not?" As cool as that sounded, Noelle just wasn't up for it. She would be tucked away in her bed right now if she didn't NEED to be here.

When Professor Marchand addressed the class, she stopped messing with the papers on her desk and listened to what he had to say. Ohh, a revealer sounded cool. The heart shape, no, but the item its self, oh yeah. Turning her attention back to the paper on her desk, Sam gave it a puzzled look. While her classmates mentioned things like origami or, she shuddered, singing cards, the color of the paper, gave her an idea. Or well, at least the red sheets. Raising her hand she asked, “Ohhh, Are we going to learn how to make howlers?” That would be nice. Not something lovie dovie, but loud and booming.

Turning her attention to the papers on the desks as instructed and then back to Professor Marchand. She was about to answer with something drull and likely already mentioned when she heard Sammy’s option. ”I like what Sammy…err I mean Samantha said about Howlers? We could also learn how to make the notes send themselves to people and fly to their recipient possibly?” she shrugged her shoulder as she lowered her previously raised hand and looked back around at everyone.

If it were howlers that would be fun.

Miss Summers very nearly guessed the activity, and her answer earned her a smile from the professor and a revealer sent her way. “Not exactly like a Howler, Miss Summers,” he replied, “but you’re on to something!”

And it seemed Miss Swynford was thinking along the same lines. “Not quite, Miss Swynford, but the thing we’re making today is similar to a Howler,” Gaston said, levitating another revealer toward the girl.

Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne also mentioned Howlers; that was turning into quite a popular answer! Gaston smiled. A nice Howler? Now that was an oxymoron, wasn’t it? “Good guess, Mr. Ashbury-Hawthorne; you’re on the right track!” he said, and another flick of his wand sent a revealer to the Hufflepuff.

And another one for Howlers. Gaston listened to Miss Sorin-Ward’s answer and smiled a bit at the mention of notes flying to their recipients. Now that was a fun idea! “Excellent guess, Miss Sorin-Ward,” he said, levitating a revealer to her.

Probably won't be much and the Slytherin was a little bit 'meh' about the thought of celebrating Valentines, but she liked getting things for free no matter who tiny it was. But if the prizes were marshmallows, you know, that'd be a different case. She'd want to win them all. But she was a good kid today, and so she wouldn't mind others winning prizes too.

As for the stacks of coloured paper, Vivian half pouted when they were asked to guess. Really? She hoped that it would have been revealed by Professor Marchand himself but, oh well. This Slytherin was no good with the guessing game, but she had to try. After all, she still wanted one of those prizes. "Charmed loooooove letters?" Maybe? It was a good guess, yeah? With Valentines Day drawing really near, it should be ideal. "Ones that sing and chant lovey dovey poems?"

Did she get a prize for that?

Now they were getting somewhere! So far Miss Swann had come closest to guessing the activity (well, part of it anyway), and her answer got a beam from the professor. “Almost right, Miss Swann,” he said as he levitated a revealer to her desk. “Good guess!”

Another beam and another revealer for Miss Fairfield. Gaston nodded in reply to her answer. “Yes! We will be making valentines that sing or make noise, Miss Fairfield,” he said, “but that’ll be a bit later on. We have to make the valentines themselves before we can make them sing.” The students had figured out the effects but still hadn’t guessed the type of valentine he had in mind.

As for the stack of papers on their desks... well this is a lot of papers for a quiz isnt it? Also best not to mention that in case the Charms man suddenly decides to pop one onto them. He chuckles at Zoryn's suggestion of paper airplanes, heck thats the first thing in his head too. But given the theme of everything he suggested this "Professor, are we going to be creating some kind of origami with magic?"

Moving on though, to the coloured paper on her desk, she had of course noticed it and thought about it. Origami, namely, but Tenacius had already mentioned that. UH ... paper airplanes? Seriously? But she couldn't dwell on it too long, because then Vivian said something that made her heart stop. Well, it wasn't what she said, but the way she said it. In particular, the emphasis on the word 'love' in love letters, because she couldn't help but feel like roomie was mocking her. Again. She ought to be used to it by now, and yet ....

Focus on the prize, Skylar. Revealers.

"More on what Tenacius said, I think perhaps origami hearts." She finally said, just elaborating on what someone else had said.

She became more and more excited as people guessed that they were making valentines with the paper, because spells involved with that were probably cool to know. And a Valentine Howler, like Derf said, would be the best thing ever. "Are we making 3D ones? Like those swan thingies people make?", she asked when she was called on. She wasn't sure what that was called, and if someone else had already mentioned it, she hadn't really paid attention to all of the answers. Revealers and valentines were distracting after all.

"You are ridiculous sometimes." It was a friendly, affectionate jest for the girl who'd slowly become her friend over the term.

However, it was still Charms class and in the spirit of that, she was going to try her absolute best whatever the circumstances... Also, she'd missed the bowl, but at the word PRIZES, the blonde perked up. The thing about Gryffindors was that there was always an underlying sense of competition...and she was not immune to it; having a healthy competitive streak herself. It ran pretty deep, actually... So, prizes? Yes, please.

As for the stacks of different colored paper, Olivia wasn't so sure. She was really loving the answer of Valentine Howlers...but something told it would have to do with something a bit more complicated. "I'm going to also say Origami.... I know there's supposed to be a charm to animate them and make them fly/flutter... I've also seen them used as a means of communication around the school." So, this wasn't far-fetched in her opinion. "Not specifically hearts...but maybe we could do flowers? Flowers are a prominent symbol of the holiday."

Finally someone guessed it! Gaston nodded, flashing the Gryffindor prefect a big smile. “That is exactly what we’re doing, Mr. Salander!” he exclaimed. “Well done!” Needless to say, a correct guess earned the boy a revealer.

Miss Diggory had the same correct guess, and not only that but she’d also guessed one of the shapes they’d be practicing. Gaston beamed as he levitated a revealer toward her. “Yes! Excellent guess, Miss Diggory!” he said.

Miss Sparkes also appeared to be on the right track based on what she said about swans… or was Gaston misunderstanding her line of thought. “I believe you mean origami, Miss Sparkes?” he said. “Good guess!” And with one last flick of his wand, he levitated a revealer to the girl.

Gaston smiled. "No offense taken, Miss Phillips," he replied. His smile grew slightly wider when the girl also correctly guessed the activity. "That is correct. Excellent guess!"

Gaston cleared his throat and waited a moment for the students' attention before he spoke, "Great answers, everyone! As some of you correctly guessed, today we'll be making origami valentines with sound effects. The spell we'll be using to add sound is similar to the spells used to make a Howler shout, but we'll cover that in more detail a bit later. Before we can add the sound effects, we must have something to add sound to..."

He paused for a moment before continuing, "Origami can be a time-consuming activity, so today we'll be using a simple folding charm...." He picked up a red square paper. "To cast, point your wand at the area you want to fold and move it in the direction of the intended fold; the incantation is Plico." He repeated the incantation and traced his wand in a diagonal line from one corner of the paper to the other; the paper folded in half. He repeated the process a few more times until the paper had formed a heart.

"I'm passing out instructions for a few origami shapes; you may choose one of these or create one of your own," he went on. "It doesn't have to be a valentine..." Because he knew some people didn't like Valentine's Day. "You can make a paper airplane-" Sidelong glance at Miss Spinnet. "-a lantern or a fan, anything you can come up with. The point of this exercise is to practice the folding charm. I'll give you a few minutes to experiment; let's see what you can make!"

Gaston aimed his wand at a stack of papers on his desk. The stack levitated and traveled around the room, dropping a sheet of paper with detailed instructions on each student's desk. They read:

Text Cut: ”Origami heart instructions”
Step 1: Start with a square piece of paper in the color of your choice.

Step 2: Fold the paper in half by folding the top corner to the bottom corner, then unfold.

Step 3: Fold the left corner to the right corner, then unfold.

Step 4: Fold the top corner to the center.

Step 5: Fold the bottom corner to the top edge.

Step 6: Fold the bottom left and right edges to the center crease.

Step 7: Fold the top and side corners back.

Text Cut: “Origami swan instructions”
Step 1: Start with a square sheet of paper. Fold in half on the diagonal. Unfold.

Step 2: Fold the left and right edges of the paper to meet the central crease made above.

Step 3: Turn the paper over and repeat: fold the left and right edges to meet the central crease.

Step 4: Fold the model in half so the sharp point meets the corner on the opposite side (align the red dots).

Step 5: Fold the sharp point back again about a third of the way; exact distance not important.

Step 6: Fold the model in half vertically (mountain fold to create left and right side of swan). Rotate quarter turn.

Step 7: Gently pull the neck and head of the origami swan away from the body. Done.

Text Cut: “Origami dove instructions”
Step 1: Start with a square piece of paper.

Step 2: Fold in half by folding the bottom corner to the top corner.

Step 3: Fold in half again by folding the left corner to the right corner. Unfold.

Step 4: Fold the left corner to the top corner.

Step 5: Fold the right corner to the top corner.

Step 6: Take the left flap and fold it in half by folding its top corner to the bottom corner. Unfold the left flap.

Step 7: Fold the right flap in half by folding the top corner to the bottom corner. Unfold.

Step 8: Fold both left and right corners to meet at the center. This is to prepare for an inverted fold in Step 10. Unfold both.

Step 9: Open the left flap.

Step 10: Do an inverted fold by denting the corner in, using the creases you made in Step 11 to guide you.Once the corner is inverted, fold the left corner to the top corner.

Step 11: To repeat on the other side, open the right flap.

Step 12: Do an inverted fold using the creases as a guide. Once the middle corner is inverted, fold the right corner to the top corner to close the flap.

Step 13: Fold the figure in half by folding the left side under the right.

Step 14: Fold the top flap diagonally down to the left. Turn the figure over.

Step 15: Fold the top flap diagonally down to the right.

Step 16: fold the wing diagonall down to the left. The crease must run from the upper left corner to the corner where the wing and body meets. Turn the figure over.

Step 17: Now we'll repeat the fold on this side. Again, fold the crease diagonally.

Step 18: Fold the top piece (which is the tail) to the right, along the lines you created with the wing. Unfold the tail.

Step 19: Take the right side of the figure and open it up to the left.

Step 20: Using the creases as guide, do an inside reverse fold on the tail. Once the tail is tucked inside, fold the dove back together.

Step 21: Take the top wing and fold it diagonally left. Turn the figure over.

Step 22 Fold the left wing diagonally to the right.

Step 23: Now on to the head. Take a small portion of the corner at the bottom of the figure and fold it up. Unfold again.

Step 24: Open the figure from the left side so we can invert the head.

Step 25: Now invert the the corner so it's tucked inside the other way. Crease the left and right sides so the head remains that way.

Step 26: That's it! Rotate the dove so the head is on top and you're done!

Text Cut: ”Origami teddy bear instructions”
Step 1: Start with a square sheet of paper in the color of your choice.

Step 2: fold the paper in half so it’s a triangle.

Step 3: once your paper is a triangle, fold it in half again.

Step 4: lay your paper flat on a table and get ready to fold some more!

Step 5: place your triangle so it’s pointed downward. Fold the left tip and the right tip towards each other.

Step 6: take each the right tip and the left tip and fold each outwards.

Step 7: at the end of each tip fold the paper back slightly.

Step 8: turn your paper over.

Step 9: fold the bottom tip up slightly to create a triangle.

Step 10: fold again upwards to make a face.

Step 11: use your quill to make your bear’s eyes, nose and mouth.

OOC: Mini activity time! As Gaston said, all you have to do is use the folding charm to create something. Use the instructions provided or come up with your own design, your choice. Try as many shapes as you like! There is no minimum post requirement, but you must make at least one thing to get full credit. If you have a question, please indicate in the title of your post. You have 30-36 HOURS to do this activity!
