The odd noise and smoke emitting from the oven could be seen as a good sign. Maybe a clue that you are heading in the right direction in turning the knob counter-clockwise. That is definitely more effective than peeking inside the oven, where all you are greeted with is more dirt and stench.

A clicking sound greets you as you turn the knob counter-clockwise once more, putting further pressure on whatever is holding the knob in place. Suddenly it breaks free and you hold it in your hand.
