Jesús did not stir when he felt the table move slightly; he only looked up after a long moment (because he felt like it) and his frown was replaced with a smile at the sight of one very peculiar Levi Kenning.
The Thunderbird blinked a few times, trying to figure out what the boy just said, until he realized that Levi was actually pronouncing his name. The corners of his lips twitched upwards, and while he refused to laugh at the other boy for the how he pronounced the s in his name, his eyes could not conceal his amusement. "I'd like to say it's an honor, but," he slammed the book shut (dramatic was his true middle name) and placed it to the side, giving Levi his full attention, "it really isn't." He'd meant nothing by the comment, he just didn't want to give Levi the impression that he was putting on any airs during their conversation. Usually, he had just a little bit more tact than that, but the sixth year (Gryffindor, he was certain) didn't strike him as someone who would enjoy any sort of forced niceties.
So Jesús opted for a frank, unadulterated conversation.
"You've been meaning to talk to me," he repeated, rolling the words around in his mind. "Only after you assessed that I was actual competition, right?" He watched Levi carefully, a smile still on his lips, still very much amused by their light conversation. "Funnily enough, I've also been meaning to talk to you." There was something to be said about being one of the few students of color in the competition; Jesús thought it was extremely odd at the lack of diversity, but that was a battle he hoped to win on another day. That was one way to start the conversation.
His eyebrows rose in slight surprise but his full mouth continued to tried to make his amusement obvious. Levi settled for biting down on his lower lip, and looked down to fetch a book on Egyptian curses and looking for its index. "Perhaps it'll be an honor by the time the conversation is over." He offered the other boy a one shoulder shrug and laughed, perhaps a little too loudly for the confines of the library. "I'm told I can be charming, or whatever. Something like that." Surely there was charm to be found in honesty, however brutal it might be.
And if Jesús Rodriguez could offer him the honesty Levi preferred, the least he could do was return it in kind. He looked up from the book, openly studying the American boy. "Yes." There was not a drop of shame in his tone. "There were sixteen of us before the first challenge, you see," He continued, allowing a small smile to curl. "I was not about to waste my days studying the other fifteen--not when I knew four of us would be cut out immediately." It was unfortunate that three out of four had been Hogwarts students but that was a story for another day. "Surely you understand."
