And the topic shifted away from Kane and Isa and Saffron, which was good, because she didn't really need thoughts of that ruining the evening. Back to the niffler... ah, so he didn't want a niffler patronus? "I guess, maybe the patronus is supposed to resemble something you're fond of? Not a reflection of you... and well, I am quite adorable and cute, like a niffler. Yet also feisty and rabid." You know, not that she was being conceited at all.
Just, honest. Because even though she was generally honest with Brent thus far in their honeymoon phase of their relationship, she wanted to share even more. Like, "Did you see Hirsch and Hawthorne linked arms earlier? And our librarian and healer are looking fine tonight. Also, why are you and Felicity not like the other Ilvermorny kids?" Okay, she should put her foot in her mouth now. Also weird that she was going on about the healer and librarian. So strange. Huh?!
Brent smiled at her when she compared herself to a niffler.
"It's not that I didn't want a niffler patronus or anything like that. It's just...if I had to make ten wild guesses as to what my patronus was going to be, I wouldn't even think to list niffler," he said.
"But now that you've compared yourself to one, they're suddenly looking better and better." He had never thought to compare his girlfriend to a niffler, but maybe that was the meaning behind the patronus. He'd always been taught the animal was linked to a certain person in the caster's life.
Huh? Hirsch and Hawthorne?
"No, I...didn't," he said. He found himself glancing around, wondering how they suddenly got on the topic of Hirsch and Hawthorne. Then just as quickly, Skylar was bringing up how fine the librarian and healer looked tonight. And NO, he had NOT noticed that one.
"What do you mean how are we not like the other Ilvermorny kids?" he asked. Smarter? Not as smart? Cuter? Not as cute? Hmm? Their conversation had taken an odd turn.
Brent finished off his last sandwich, suddenly feeling even stranger than he had before.
"The headmistress is looking really pretty tonight, too," he said, feeding off what Skylar had said about the librarian and healer. Of course, Brent was just a kid, but he'd always thought the headmistress had a good look to her. He wasn't sad at all that she'd managed to turn up at the same school he'd transferred to.
