The silver dagger sheath, and then the revealed blade, caught the first year's attention. It looked really pretty from here! The professor's questions were sort of weird, though. There weren't that many uses for daggers, were there? She thought that her classmates had covered the topic pretty much completely by the time she was ready to answer. Stabbing, cutting, fighting and defense, what else were daggers used for?
The second question also seemed kind of obvious to Emmeline, but only because they were in Transfiguration class. Obviously they were going to transfigure something and the professor's question made Emmeline feel sure that it would be related to the dagger somehow. That could be pretty cool!

She took the dagger when Jessa passed it over, not really paying attention to people's answers anymore. They all ended up on the board anyway, and she had a slightly short attention span, if people hadn't noticed yet. She liked how detailed and nice this dagger was; it was even prettier in person, and it really looked just like a mini-sword. Emmeline twirled it around in her hand with its sheath on to look at the pretty object from all angles before passing it to either Derf or Stasya. They could both reach it from how she was holding it out to them, after all.

Now, how to answer the professor's questions? She knew her answers wouldn't be very good, because lots of good answers were already taken, but she thought maybe she could be specific and get away with having similar opinions. Raising her hand, she answered: "I think daggers can be used in Defense Against the Dark Arts. Maybe against evil vampires as a last resort or something. And, there's a cool charm Professor Marchand knows that lets him summon things from other places, so we could use that to get a dagger!" True enough, though she was still super sure that the professor wanted a Transfiguration-type answer. But at least she'd tried, right?

She didn't think she'd ever come to a moment when she needed a dagger in her possession when she could just flick her wand and cast a Severing Charm. It was kinda... well, weird. Why need a dagger when you've got a powerful wand that can do anything? The blonde was filled with confusion and a lot of questions in mind, but she decided to reserve that for later. Despite her opinions, she didn't bother to voice them out, so she proceeded to practice the spell's incantation and wand movement. She was just trying to get onto the professor's good side so they could have time to roast her marshmallows.

Taking her wand out, Vivian practice the wand movement. She made a circle, as if trying to trace the path which the smoke was making. She was more intrigued by the smoke than the actual movement of her wand, to be honest. She sometimes wished she could fly free, like the smoke did and all. Ahem, anyway...

"Fumus Lamina... Fumus Lamina," the Slytherin said, focusing on pronunciation of each syllable. "FUH-moos LAWH-meen-ah." That sounded better, didn't it? Putting the emphasis on certain syllables. Of course, she just wanted to get it right and move on to eating the marshmallows she had brought. She was also feeling extra friendly today, so she'd probably share for the whole class. They'd have to make sure they all had at least one marshie. Three packs were enough, hopefully.

Curious and bothered about something in mind, Vivian raised her hand. "Professor, I have a question," she said. "What exactly does smoke have that makes it possible to turn into a dagger? I mean... we could use stones instead because it's solid and hard, so why smoke?" There, she'd said it. The Slytherin then went back to practicing the wand movement.

After repeating the spell a few more times, the Snake finally looked up from the fire and into the smoke it was producing.

She wasn't sure how much it looked like a dagger, but if she squinted at the curling tendrils and tilted her head just so, she could maybe imagine a glint of silver, a pointed edge. Moving her wand in a circular motion around the shapes she was imagining in the smoke, Flick began to chant. "Fumus Lamina. Fumus Lamina." Ensuring that her emphasis was in the right place, and her pronunciation was accurate. She didn't want to imagine what would happen if she said the spell wrong, not when smoke and daggers were involved.

However, it did bring a question to mind, and she raised a hand, momentarily pausing in her (thus far unsuccessful) casting. "Professor?" A frown formed on the girls face, hoping that the woman wouldn't think her question stupid. "You said if you were in immediate danger and needed a dagger... But... Why wouldn't you just use magic to defend yourself, rather than creating a dagger?"

That was okay with Emmeline, because they weren't her best answers anyway, and besides, Professor Stewart had a cruppy in a kennel near Sirius. So the first year was willing to forgive the professor for a LOT worse than ignoring an answer.

As the whole class practiced the incantation, Emmeline joined them: " FUH-moos LAWH-meen-ah." She actually muttered it under her breath a few more times, to make super doubly sure that she had it down. Turning smoke into a dagger was a really cool spell, and she wanted to be able to do it! The first year practiced the wand movement separately a few times too, even though it was just a circle. New spells in Transfiguration were usually even harder than new spells in Charms, so everything had to be perfect before she tried the spell.

Once she was sure that she could both say the incantation and do the wand movement correctly, Emmeline aimed for a relatively thick (for this magical stuff) patch of smoke. She envisioned an even prettier dagger than the one the professor had passed around, with rubies and diamonds and other stuff she could take off and give to the nifflers in the barn. She kept that shiny picture in her mind and muttered: [b]"Fumus Lamina!"/[b]

Nope. After five more attempts at the spell, the Gryffindor decided that maybe detachable gem stones on her sheath was too much to ask of the smoke. It would be really fancy after all, and maybe the smoke didn't want to work that hard.

Her next potential dagger was about the same length as the professor's but much simpler, with a plain golden handle and a simple red sheath. That wouldn't overwhelm the smoke, right? Time to find out: "Fumus Lamina!" Emmeline focused realllllly hard on the dagger in her mind as she said the incantation and drew the circle around her patch of smoke. To her delight, the smoke was definitely solidifying! What looked like a dagger fell into the first year's outstretched hand and Emmeline was about to be thrilled with every inch of it, except --

There was only half a dagger in her hand! The handle and the red leather sheath looked okay, except that the blade (and the sheath with it) randomly ended about half way down. There wasn't a point at the end or anything, it just stopped. This dagger definitely wouldn't be stabbing any vampires. Emmeline tossed it aside in disappointment. But this spell had been made famous by Minerva McGonagall, Derf had said so! McGonagall had been a Great Witch AND a Gryffindor, so she and Hermione Granger-Weasley had become a sort of role model in the first year's eyes. Which meant she had to master this spell!

Emmeline took a few deep breaths before she tried again. This time she thought of a smaller dagger with a plain, bronze handle and an even plainer, black sheath to cover it. The first year stared and stared at the smoke she was using for at least ten minutes as she practiced imagining how the dagger would come to life. Finally sure that she could visualize this better than she had on her last attempt, Emmeline picked up her wand again and drew a circle around her patch of smoke once more: "Fumus Lamina!" She pictured the smoke slowly coming together and forming each part of her dagger from the smoke. The image got clearer and clearer as Emmeline stared at the smoke, until finally a small dagger dropped into her hand. This time, the dagger matched her mental image exactly! Except that it was smaller than she'd meant for it to be. Emmeline thought it would still work against a crazed vampire, though.

With how quickly the answers from her questions were coming at her Camilla had somehow managed to not miss the reply of one of her younger students. Now it wasn't that she hadn't heard her or deliberately didn't respond to the young girl for that was something she would never do! Seeing the young girl working on the spell already as the other students did the same Cami walked over to her. She watched Emmeline try the spell several times before getting it right and smiled warmly. "There you go, practice and focus makes perfect. If you didn't already summon one it could certainly help you against vampire enemies." She smiled at her letting her know that she had indeed heard her reply earlier.

A question. Professor Stewart made her way over towards where Vivian was practicing the spell. "Very good question. We could very well have used stones today as the chemical materials would be very similar. I mainly choose smoke for today's lesson for the simple reasoning that it takes more focus from you. You would need to form the dagger in your mind, see that dagger in the smoke around you. It's like looking at clouds and seeing a face in it or a creature, everyone sees it a bit differently." She paused a moment. "There's also the fact that it rains a lot here and there's fog which is very similar to smoke. So if you could make a dagger from smoke then you shouldn't have trouble making one from most other things." Hopefully that had made sense and she hadn't confused her even more.

Camilla smiled hearing another very good question. "Well for me the dagger would be more of a distraction or used in close combat when I couldn't get a clear spell cast with my wand. If I wasn't alone, maybe I'm being attacked with others I wouldn't want to accidentally harm someone that wasn't a danger to me." There's many reasons she could have given but why make things harder then they needed to be.

OOC: Great job so far everyone! There's about 7 more hours left before we move on to the main activity!
