However, the Slytherin was still quite convinced that smoke was bad, unless it came from a source of fire used for cooking. That case, it'd be a good kind of smoke.

Anyway... it was time to move on with the lesson. Vivian's attention was caught when a dagger revealed. The blonde couldn't help but blink. "What is she going to do with that...?" She asked her fellow she-snake squad because, honestly, it was quite dangerous to have such a sharp object in here. Sure, they were mature but she totally didn't trust the younger students with that. Just saying.

The Slytherin waited for her turn to be able to hold the dagger. Once she did, she looked and analysed it closely, from the tip to tip. It was really shiny... and, by the looks of it, really sharp. It wasn't that heavy to hold, just about the right weight for an average person to carry around. Though the handle part was heavier than the blade, probably because it was made of something sturdy to avoid loosing grip. As for the Professor's questions, the fourth year passed the dagger to the person beside her before raising her hand. "I'd most probably use it for defense, Professor," Vivian said, nodding. What else would she do with such a dagger, anyway? Not like she wanted to cause any harm. "And if I didn't have one, I'd Transfigure something into a dagger."

... Well, why else would they be attending a Transfiguration class? Duh.

"Yes, both very good answers." With a flick of her wrist both 'For Defense' and how she would get one by means of Transfiguration appeared on the board.

SPOILER!!: Etta!

She waited until the dagger was passed to her before carefully studying it. Hmm. She removed it from the sheath to get a better look.

What might it be used for? Etta wasn't exactly sure. "Professor.. I honestly don't understand or know.. I mean, a dagger? In this day and age? It actually looks more like a relic to me." As for the next question, she gave a small smile and a shrug of the shoulders. "Probably borrow from someone who does?" That was a rather cheeky answer but you know.. be different. She carefully placed the dagger back into the sheath before passing it on to her classmate.

Camilla smiled as Etta spoke. "One would think that a dagger wouldn't be used often anymore and most are kept on display but a dagger does come in handy from time to time." The replies were added onto the board with a flick of her wand.

There was too much at stake to accept rejections so easily. It was pretty evident that he wasn't completely here and present...that was if anyone properly gave him a look instead of the dagger that students were no doubt going to be all over and whispering about in the next minute or so.

"What could I use it for? To cut my sandwiches in half instead of a measly butter knife, Professor. I bet there wouldn't be unnecessary bread tears with your blade." And now he was thinking about sandwiches... Ham and cheese... oooh yummy...

Now this. Camilla wasn't sure whether to laugh or not because honestly she hadn't even considered this as an option. "I have to admit I myself never would have thought about that but it would be much more cooler then a butter knife. If you ever happen to give this a try let me know how it goes, yes?" It was an interesting concept and she was curious.

SPOILER!!: Jessa!

When the stuff rising to the ceiling didn't trigger your asthma, there was a good chance it was magic in the first place and not entirely something that needed to be a concern of hers. You could even say Jessa figured something like that was the case after walking and and still being able to breathe correctly so while she felt the Professor's response to her was very useful for anyone that might have been wondering, she wasn't particularly fussed.

Her attention was instead on the dagger that had just been revealed, the one that was now making its way around the room.

Very sharp, no playing around, don't touch the blade. Right. Got it.

Jessa accepted the dagger from the person sat directly to her left and unsheathed it to have a better look even as she offered up her own response. "I think it could also be used to get you out of a sticky spot, Professor. Like if you've been tied up, or you need to cut through something." Because it was super sharp, right? Seemed like the perfect escape tool if you asked her.

Once she'd had her look, Jessa passed it on. "Like Vivian, I'd try to transfigure something into a dagger too. It seems the easiest and most convenient option when you haven't got one but need it." Plus the young girl loved any excuse to have to transfigure something. It was sometimes difficult at first but once you got the hang of it, it was hella rewarding.

"Indeed it can be!" Such good good answers so far! Right onto the board this answer went as well.

"These were stealth weapons for Muggles, kinda like our wands but with a very limited purpose." As he felt the dagger in his hand he thought of the Professor's other question-- how can they acquire one if they didnt have one in hand? "Well Professor, back in the day, people would go to Bladesmiths to have something like these created for them. Goblins are the best metalworkers in the Wizarding World so they can make something like this for the right price."

Such smart ones she had for students. "Yes the main purpose was protection or defense. That's a good idea but if you wanted this dagger quickly going and having one made by a Goblin wouldn't be the best choice, however I would most certainly love to own one made by them." Such beautiful pieces of work Goblins made.

SPOILER!!: Matt!

He wanted one.

What one might use it for?? "To STAB people, of course." Duuuuhhhh. "Mainly." There were other uses for it as well, Matt knew, but that was the MAIN use for a dagger, obviously. "You know, self-defense." Or not, but they got the drill. "You can conjure one up!?" COULD they? Aaaaaaaahhhhhh, that would be amazing if they could and maybe not a very good idea because Matt would probably do it all the time.

Not to stab people, but you know. Just to OWN some pretty awesome daggers.

As with each and every student so far she paid close attention to their actions to the danger. Matt's was one of awe and it put a smile on her face like the others that reacted the same way. His answer was very much correct and straight to the point as well. "Well yes but I would like to hope only done for self defense." That's what she was teaching here. Ways to help themselves. "Conjuring one! Very good!"

She did, this time, raise a tentative hand. "Some cultures used daggers in a ritualistic sense, as a sort of symbol." Hence why they'd become more decorated over time. "As for acquiring one, I agree with the idea that transfiguring something into one would be the best course of action."

"Very good. Daggers just like that one are used in many rituals around the world for a variety of reasons."

SPOILER!!: Cassie!

Cassie had ideas on what it could be used for, however as they each came to mind, her classmates seemed to be just a little quicker and the Ravenclaw hadn’t been one to repeat answers somewhat unnecessarily. She did write down one or two that she hadn’t thought of as well as the professor’s responses to each of the suggested thoughts on smoke usages. Then soon enough they were brought to the next item on the menu.

A dagger…

Yeah, Cass knew what it was. More of a weapon than just a knife but a similar shape. She absently watched it being passed around, thinking and listening more to the answers of the questions poised to the class. There was for defense which was the fifth year’s main thought. For cooking purposes. And then getting oneself out of trouble which the Ravenclaw supposed was another angle for the defense idea. Finally, the use as a ritualistic instrument. All good ones to give. “It could be used to make stuff,” Cassie offered herself after raising her hand. “Like a carving tool or such, especially if you had it for another of the other purposes and not a carving tool itself.”

As for acquiring one, the obvious answer was to transfigure it. Perhaps out of a stick or something.

Used to make something else. Camilla smiled nodding in agreement. "It's definitely sharp enough to help you carve out fine detail." This as well as the answers before it were all added onto the board.

SPOILER!!: Noelle!

Oh right. The uses of daggers. "Protection probably." Of course, Noelle would never want to use a dagger against someone... unless she ABSOLUTELY had to.

The professor nodded. "Protection is what it is mainly used for, yes."

SPOILER!!: Sky!

It was a gorgeous item, to which Sky was easily able to see and feel from having held it, before passing it on to the next student. A real, sharp blade. The Professor was nuts, passing that around with teenagers here, but guess it was part of the trusting your students thing. And surely no one would do any horseplay with an object during a lesson.

It's weight was surprisingly heavy, yet not. Like she could tell it was solid metal, yet it also had a light feel. Transfiguring an object made sense, given the class that they were in, so no points to add there, however, surely there was some unique out-of-the-box use for a dagger that her classmates weren't thinking of. Besides, why else would the Professor have introduced an object in a class that began with fire-pits and smoke? So surely there must have been some connection between the two...

Um, why was Rooney using a DAGGER to slice sandwiches in half? That seemed a little excessive? Also, was the head boy hungry or something, which was why he was talking about food?

Nevermind though, because still had yet to offer a use for the object. Raising her hand, she hesitated a moment, "Well, I'm not exactly sure, other than what's been mentioned before me, but none of those things really have much to do with smoke... except perhaps the dagger has magical properties within it that would allow a person to cut through the smoke, if you will. Smoke can make it fairly difficult to breath, especially if it's thick in the air, so maybe the dagger has like absorbent properties?" Kind of like that Godric Gryffindor sword heirloom she'd read about in Hogwarts, A History, and while she was maybe way out on a limb here, it was maybe worth a guess.

Now this was something to think about. "That would certainly be very useful. The dagger being passed around right now is an ordinary dagger, nothing magical to this one." Maybe.

SPOILER!!: Shay!

It was a knife, a dagger to be exact. She must have been very brave to pass a dangerous weapon around with this lot. When the dagger made it to Shay, she unsheathed it and looked it over very carefully. It was really quite interesting. She tried to make a mental note of it's characteristics and distinguishing features.

Of course there was a question attached to the curious item. Fortunately or unfortunately, Shay was pretty much in agreement with those who had answered before her. Most likely a person would use a dagger to defend oneself. And being as though this was Transfiguration class, Shay figured that they could obtain one by transfiguring another object into a dagger. Since she had nothing new to add to the conversation, Shay remained quiet and kept writing.

The next student didn't have anything to add by ways of answering the question but that was alright. Camilla noticed she was very much paying attention and had been taking notes as well.

Plus most of the answers she would've thought of had been pretty much said - though that cutting sandwiches one Rooney mentioned was probably her favorite one. It really was just a big knife, basically. So why not use it for cutting sandwiches and fruit and stuff?

She should suggest it to Bast sometime. Hehe.

But anyway, where to get one if you didn't already have one? Hmm... "Maybe you could transfigure smoke into a dagger?" she suggested, raising her hand. Might not be right, but she wasn't sure how else a dagger had something to do with smoke. Aside from what Skylar said, that was also a good idea!

Rula. The Head Girl might have passed the dagger on to the person beside her very quickly but her answer earned a bright smile from the professor. "You most certainly could!" Had everyone heard this reply? If they hadn't they would be coming back to it in a few moments.

SPOILER!!: Ava!

Were they going to transfigure the smoke into a weapon, she didn't know if that was possible. But well, this was magic and everything seemed possible, you know? She observed the dagger closer as someone passed it onto her. Yeah, it looked very sharp and shiny. Was it made from the finest goblin silver by the way?

To be honest, this dagger looked way much cooler as a weapon. The Gryffindor passed it to another person and listened to the professor. "If we talked about that dagger, I'd probably will keep it and hang it on my bedroom's wall because it looks very expensive. But the usual function of a dagger is for weapon." She answered as she put her hand on in the air. And transfiguring one was the obvious answer so, she'd rather not to repeat the answer.

Cami laughed softly. "Keeping it would be a good idea and a nice conversation piece but yes using it as protection is it's main function."

SPOILER!!: Olivia!

Sorry, but Olivia REFUSED to touch that thing. For triggering reasons. Only associating this type of weapon with a horrific memory, the blonde put her head down while it was being passed around; not wanting anyone to see the sudden panic on her face. Nor wanting to be offered to touch it. She simply wasn't comfortable having one in hand.

With a deep breath, she thought about other things outside of the classroom. Like Winter Holidays coming up....Putting up the Christmas tree and decorating the house....Geezus, g i f t s. Put a pin in that brain.

Peeking to see that the dagger wasn't in danger of being passed her way, Liv felt slightly more confident rejoining the conversation. "They can be used to hurt people. And not just on a self-defense front. In the wrong hands, they ruin innocent peoples' lives." Pause. Deep breath. Exhale. "...I suppose you could conjure this type of weapon if you had the right materials available. Or simply purchase one." Because that's what you did when you needed things. You bought them. None of them present in this lesson were bladesmiths, as Ace had brought up. But his mentioning of Goblins did make her remember the Sword of Gryffindor.

"To add onto what Ace said...these types of weapons have a lot of different properties in our world, too. Thanks to magic...Though, I'm not really sure what this all has to do with smoke, Professor."

The fact that Olivia had not only let the dagger pass her by but also looked away caught the women's attention right away. This may be cause for speaking with her in a few moments concerning the rest of the lesson. Her answer was a very good one though. "This is very much true. A dagger is dangerous as is almost anything when put into the wrong hands." If she didn't trust her students this lesson wouldn't be taking place. "Most weapons made by Goblins do indeed contain some form of magical properties. This dagger was made by me and therefore is just a simple dagger." What this had to do with smoke they would soon be finding out.

SPOILER!!: Derf!

Which meant he was sort of missing out on half the explanation he supposed, but this was just the theory portion anyway AND he assumed that the dagger was a transfigured one AND since they were taking about smoke that implied things SO he assumed that this dagger was prooooobably lighter than usual.

He could always find out later anyway.

Whispering a few things to Abey, the professor's response to him CLICKED and his hand shot back up in the air. Yes, he DID know HOW! And someone else - or a few people - had already mentioned it as well.

"What would Minerva McGonagall do!?" he chirped. WWMMD?! "S-She would transfigure smoke into daggers as a means of self defense."

Derf also let the dagger pass him by but that was fine as Cami was sure it had to do with him whispering things to Abey. "Exactly!" Another bright smile given to all the students.

Accepting the dagger from the last student to have held it Camilla wrapped it back up in the cloth and set it aside on her seat. "You all gave some wonderful answers. Daggers can be used in a variety of ways, the main way being as a means of self defense as many of you suggested."

"Buying one if I needed one or just wanted to have one in my possession is easy but it could get costly. If I was in immediate danger and needed to have one right this moment I would need to magically get my hands on one." So buying it was out of the question as was asking a friend or anything else if they had one. "Conjuring one is a bit more difficult to do then what we will be doing today." It had been mentioned by a few students.

Camilla walked over to stand side by side with the fire-pit that was centered before her seat. "As a couple of you guess we will be changing smoke into daggers. It's not as complicated as conjuring one but it does take a certain level of concentration. You need to focus on the smoke, watch the way it moves around. You need to be able to see the smoke condensing together in your mind, slowly forming the blade and handle and sheath, changing into a dagger." It wasn't a hard spell by any means but the focus had to be there.

"Take out your wands please." She waited for everyone to do this holding her own wand firmly in her hand. "The wand movement is a simple circle motion around the smoke you are using. The incantation is Fumus Lamina. Let's all try saying that together first, FUH-moos LAWH-meen-ah" she repeated more slowly breaking it down for them correctly before flicking her wand and making it appear on the board.

Quote:
Wand movement - A circle around the smoke you are using
Incantation - Fumus Lamina
Pronunciation: FUH-moos LAWH-meen-ah
Uses - Smoke to Daggers
"I want you all to try saying the incantation a few times and giving the movement a try before you work with the smoke. When you're ready you may get up and found a spot in the room to try this or you may stay seated if you like. Remember clear focus. Picture the smoke forming into the dagger you want it to be, a simple one will do." No need to try to get very fancy. "You want there to be a sheath as well when you picture it in your mind."

She would be walking around making sure no one was messing about and offering assistance as well. If anyone was truly uncomfortable with this they were welcome to come speak with her.

OOC: Here's the mini activity everyone! They're turning smoke into daggers, a circle wand movement over the smoke they're using while saying the incantation. The older the students are the easier in forming a true detailed dagger and sheath will be, so feel free to have them not be formed well or whatever you like! Please no major injuries! We'll be moving on in about 30 hours but Cami will be around if needed
