Today, the Slytherin only had THREE and that was not enough for her, especially when they had actual fire-pits for this lesson. Professor Stewart should've told them they were having these for today. Cue the pout.

The student who arrived after Vivian was rather unfamiliar and definitely a stranger. However, the Slytherin wasn't going to pretend that she didn't say anything because that was rude, and so she smiled at the girl. "Hello, fellow early person." Because this was rare. Vivian had never been the first person to class.

The blonde was glad to see her she-snake squad entering the room. Vivian beamed at both Felicity and Skylar because duh. "Hello, friends!" She called out for them since she had saved them both seats near her, and another for Junia if she ever came. As for the marshmallows, Vivian shrugged. "I would've brought more if we were told about the fire-pits, you know." What a missed opportunity! "But will three packs be enough?" She'd give up all her marshmallows for a day like this. They could even make Smores!

But the click from the door meant that the lesson was about to start. Vivian had prepared her three packs of marshmallows and placed them all on her LAP, in case they were given the cue to start roasting. The smile on Vivian's face faded when Professor Stewart said that it would wait for maybe later on. Cue even more pouting. The Slytherin tucked the packs back into her bag, but she still remained hopeful for the end of the lesson.

With the first question raised, Vivian blinked. The importance of... smoke? She wanted to say nothing, because it was bad for the health and the lungs. However, she didn't want to seem pessimistic. Everything had a good purpose though, right? Once she had an answer in mind, the blonde raised her hand. "There's capnomancy, Professor, or the divination involving smoke." Aside from that, there really wasn't anything good about it... just sayin'.

With a question such as the one she had just asked, Camilla Stewart was ready for any answer these students tossed her way. Most what she was expecting from them was that it was harmful and how it hurt people and nature but she knew now that these kids were smart. "Capnomancy! Very good, Miss Fairfield." With a flick of her wrist 'Capnomancy' appeared on the blackboard beside her.

Think.

"Uh, well, smoke is useful to know that there's a fire burning, so use caution when in the area." That was such a lame use, but it was true. Fire burning equaled smoke equaled possibility of burning or injuring yourself.

"As a caution. That's a good answer and very true. If there's a lot of smoke it could very well be a warning that something has happened and the area could be dangerous." Camilla smiled adding 'As a caution to dangerous situations' onto the board.

Still curious about the topic for the day's class, Shay waited for the big reveal. The mystery was partially solved, but unfortunately the class might not include snacks. Anyway, the Gryffindor listened to the first question of the day. With food still on her mind, she gave her answer. "Smoke is good for giving barbecued food a wonderful flavor. It's a flavor that you just can't get otherwise." That was unless you used liquid smoke and even that wasn't quite the same. Shay knew that this was probably not the answer the professor was looking for, but it was a valid answer......she thought so anyway.

Camilla laughed softly nodding her head in agreement. "That smoky flavor on barbecued food really is something special, isn't it?" Way to think out of the box on this one Shay. The answer was also added onto the board.

SPOILER!!: Ava!

She thought that they might be burning something or just related to the fire, but she was not really correct. In fact, it's about the smoke.

Raising her hand, Ava answered the Professor's question. "In addition to what Skylar said about smoke as a sign that there's a fire, it's also can be used when someone's being lost in the middle of forest so hopefully the rescue team or someone else can find and save them." Just like in the movies.

Another very good answer indeed, which Cami added onto the board with a flick of her wand. "As a beckon if you're lost. Smoke signals could definitely come in handy for that." Might just save the persons life.

SPOILER!!: Olly!

Too bad Professor Stewart only mentioned it to say that's not what they were doing. Except she did say they might be able to at the end. Olly really wanted to. If they concentrated and got done early they might be able to do it. Which meant he would really pay attention.

What was the importance of smoke? Um. "When people burn incense or something don't people use the smoke because it has healing powers or something?" Or maybe not. Olly didn't know anything.

"Very good, many people do believe that burning incense helps heal different aliments such as headaches and the like." 'Healing power of incenses' was added onto the growing list on the board.

The girl remained in thought for a while, not able to come up anything that innovative.

"Um.. professor.. like someone mentioned, it's probably used for Divination purposes.. right? To predict the future or something like that? And.. uh.. smoke contains soot? And certain chemicals too. " .. that was all she could guess. Oh, well. Now, she just waited for class to move on, her parchment and quill ready to take notes.

"Correct. It can and is used in different forms of Divination for more then one reason I'm sure." Like with most things there was more than one way to use it to suit your own purposes.

SPOILER!!: Olivia!

Smoke signals. Smoke could be use for divination... There was the smokescreen spell which created a diversion and clouded the other person's vision so that it was harder to find their opponent. Hmm... Yep. That was all Olivia had on that. She raised her hand. "Could smoke be used as a diversion?" she offered.

A diversion. Professor Stewart smiled at Olivia and nodded flicking her wand at the board where her answer then appeared. "Definitely! That few moments of smoke surrounding the area and whomever you might need to get away could be all you need to get away from the situation or at the very least come up with a plan of action." Very good answer indeed.

Smoke. But... These fires were smoke-less. And... Oh, she guessed that really, it didn't matter: if they were to be using smoke in this lesson, the Professor would surely make it happen at the right time. Although, as of yet, Felicity wasn't sure how smoke could be used. People had mentioned signalling, and Divination, but this was Transfiguration, and she was already lost.

She didn't very well want to put her hand up and say that smoke was the main cause of fire-related deaths, but that was her only knowledge on the matter. So Felicity stayed quiet, listening to the other answers.

A quiet one. That was quite alright as Felicity was paying attention. Cami gave her a smile before moving onto the next person.

SPOILER!!: Matt!

They were talking about smoke. Actually, Matt liked the smell of smoke, and he missed it at the moment, even though he was sitting pretty much in front of a fire. Not approving of the charm work going on there that day. "It can be used for communication!" Rah!

"Communication, yes! It can be used as a warning or a beckon!" Cami smiled nodding her head once before adding Matt's answer onto the board as well.

SPOILER!!: Kirk!

There was still a chance that today's lesson wouldn't disappoint him once the first question came... Supposedly. As he leaned back casually.

Everyone seemed to be making the same answer with smoke, it was pretty obvious on what it can do. But he had another idea, "Smoke can let you know that you messed up. Like when you're brewing a potion, cooking, or even heating your hair. If it's smoking, then you did something wrong by letting it burn for too long." There. That had to be a new one.

Professor Stewart shifted in her seat making it easier to flick her wand at the board beside her so the answer appeared there. "This is very true. If you're cooking and you smell smoke that most certainly is a sign that you may have cooked the food to long or have the heat turned up to high. Smoke during a potion brewing can indeed be a sign that you did something wrong." Another very good answer.

SPOILER!!: Jessa!

Jessa offered her a wide smile before turning her attention back to the Professor.

Yep, this was the one class she would miss NOTHING in. No distractions.

The mention of an extendable ear was almost enough to grab her attention....but only almost. Blue eyes remained locked on the woman as she began her lesson, listening keenly for what would no doubt be a great lesson today. Couldn't go wrong with fire, y'know?

"It's also an interesting fact to note that more people die of smoke inhalation than the actual fires when they break out." While they were on the subject of smoke. Would they be making their own smoke or learning how to transfigure it into something else?? She was down for either to be honest.

This answer was both sad but true. "Correct. Smoke inhalation is very dangerous which is why the fires before you all have been magically altered. Which is why even though there is smoke about the room and above your heads from the fires the smell isn't very strong if you even smell it at all nor is it very thick at all." There would be no worries about the students falling ill due to smoke today.

SPOILER!!: Noelle!

Once the professor started talking about smoke, Noelle glances around the room noticing that it wasn't too overwhelming and it didn't smell... smokey in here. Odd. This was Transfiguration though. Professor Stewart being a wiz. She wondered what they would be doing today. If it involved smoke, maybe it was Fumus Lamina, turning smoke into weapons. Hmm.

"Smoke can also be used as a symbol to get out. Like if it's a lot of smoke coming from a room. Don't go in there. Or get out of your house."

"This is true. Smoke makes a very good warning sign to keep out." The reply was added onto the board in the same fashion as all the others.

SPOILER!!: Sophie!

A brilliant idea suddenly slapped her over the head. Snagging her fingers and raising her arm into the air, she leapt from her seat. "SMOKE SIGNALS!!!" She felt her outburst had been a little out of the blue, so she hurried to explain. "Like, if a Muggle was stuck on an island in the middle of the ocean, they could start a big fire that could create tons of smoke. Most ships nearby would be able to see the smoke above the horizon and would recognize it as a signal for help. You know, like a flare thingy or something!!

Hastily realizing how awkward she sounded, Sophie plopped back into her seat. Her face burned a bright red and her hands shook a little bit. Whoops... Maybe she shouldn't be so spontaneous next time...

"Yes! Smoke signals would be very helpful to you should you ever get stranded on an island or anywhere else." Camilla smiled at Sophie's answer and the excitement she was giving off.

Emmeline returned Jessa's smile, though she did notice the third year was a lot more attentive than usual to the professor today. That was cool, that's what they were supposed to be doing. In fact, Jessa's behavior encouraged Emmeline to pay more attention to Professor Stewart once she started speaking. They were doing stuff with smoke? That could be super fun! She smirked in a secretive way, because she was thinking that James would regret skipping this lesson unless he showed up late. He would LOVE these fire pit things.

But back to smoke, right. Raising her hand, she answered: "It's really easy to choke on smoke, Professor." She paused in confusion, because now that she thought about it..."Is this magic smoke, Professor? Shouldn't there be A LOT more smoke in here?"

"That is quite true. Have you noticed how even though the there's smoke in this room it isn't hard to breath?" she smiled adding the young girls answer onto the board. "It is magically altered smoke, yes. I didn't want anyone having a hard time breathing or being unable to see during the lesson."

SPOILER!!: Derf!

They had been working all term so far and he HAD just bought a little after start of term so they were NEW and well taken care of. Even wrapped them up in a special towel at the end of the day and tucked them safely away in his trunk!

"Uuuuuum...there are FIRE PITS-S," he reported back, his blue eyes darting around the room for anything else of note. "Oh. And Stasya says-s-s hello! Well...no...s-s-she told me to s-say 'hi' not 'hello'...but s-she says-s hi!"

Grinning at Stasya, his eyes couldn't help but wander over to the marshmallow yielding Syltherin. Jessa got a small wave as well as she settled into her seat and he was JUST about to explain to Emmeline about the Extendable Ears when Professor Stewart officially started the lesson.

"We're talking about s-s-smoke," he whispered into the Ear again, just in case Abey hadn't heard properly. But what did he know about smoke? "You can make s-signals out of it!" he chirped. "OH! And Minerva McGonagall us-s-sed it as a WEAPON!"

"You can make signals out it, yes." Very good. It was what Derf said next that made Camilla grinned broadly and stand up from her seat. "Yes! The question is how? Do you know how it was used as a weapon?" She was certainly curious to know if he did.

SPOILER!!: Olivia!
Quote:
Oh, Professor...

Soooo, they were going to doing something with smoke...? For this lesson? Olivia had to wonder if the actual smoke could be magically contained and then transfigured into a physical object... Imagine how difficult that would be? She desperately wanted to learn, and was improving, but there was still a long way to go.

As for...the question at hand, Olivia was going to agree with Olly. Hello, Olly. "For medicine, but also in meditation. People burn incense in oil to induce a feeling of calm." She supposed that could be considered with healing. Eh, that was for the Professor to sort. Above her pay grade.

"Also, muggles use a thing for vaporizing. I'm not sure if that would fall into the category of 'smoke', though."

"All very good and correct answers." The women added the replies onto the board before turning her full attention back onto the class.

Still standing on her feet, Camilla looked at the board and the class. "All of your answers are correct. As you can see smoke is more helpful then one might normally think and can be used for many different things." She paused a moment before continuing. "As a warning of danger, as a beckon for help, a distraction from a possibly dangerous situation, healing and so much more." There was just as many ways it could help someone as it could harm them.

Turning and picking up a something from where it had been tucked away nicely on the side of seat, the professor unwrapped it from the white cloth that was covering it. "I'm sure you all know what this is," she spoke holding the item up but it's handle.

SPOILER!!: Dagger!

She carefully slipped the sheath from the dagger before holding it up once more for them all to see. "I am going to pass this around so everyone can get a closer look." With that said she slid the sheath back on before handing it off to the student closest to her, handle first of course. "You may remove the sheath to have a better look but you do not have to do so but make sure to put the sheath back on before passing it to the next person. There will be no messing about, no waving it around or pointing it at anyone. It's very much real and very much sharp. So don't go touching the tip or the blade." So no playing around will be tolerated.

"Take not of it's shape. It's weight. What it's made of." Camilla watched as it was passed from one student to the next. "What might we use one for? How could we acquire one if we didn't have one on hand?" Just something to think about and reply to as the dagger was passed around the room.

OOC: Those were some great replies everyone! Cami is passing around a dagger for each student to look at/hold (it is in a sheath! so no injuries please). There's two main questions this time "What might we use one for?" and "How could we acquire one if we didn't have one on hand?"

I will be moving forward in about 24 hours
