Still refusing to take so much as a single step from the headmistress' side, Sophie reached out as far as she could to snag one of the pendants. Luckily, her finger was just long enough to grab the necklace and she was able to return to her center of balance without too much difficulty. As she examined the surface of the pendant, she couldn't help but be slightly disappointed. If the rune didn't have anything to do with chocolate, did that mean they wouldn't be receiving any chocolate? What a sad thought...
Time to focus on more important things. Staring at the amulet in her hand, she concentrated as hard as her eleven-year-old mind would let her. "Intaglio Ehwaz," she whispered, praying for it to work. Unfortunately, even after waiting for a few seconds, the rune did not appear. Scrunching her face up, she glared at it. "Intaglio Ehwaz! Intaglio Ehwaz! Intaglio Ehwaz! Intaglio Ehwaz! Intaglio Ehwaz!" Woah, definitely just like one of those tongue twisty things that you have to say five times fast. But not even the tongue twister was able to completely carve the rune into the surface of the pendant. Getting desperate now, Sophie tried one last time. "Intaglio Ehwaz!" Finally, the rune appeared. It had a strange sickly yellow glow rather than a golden one, but she didn't mind too much. It would probably still work.
Now it was time to move on to the more difficult stuff. "Ehwo ehwo ehwo, e e e e h w o o o, ehwu ehwa ehwi ehwe ehwo, ehwo ehwe ehwi ehwa ehwagooo..." Sophie's mouth tripped over the confusing syllables, muddling up the phrase. Frowning, she tried again. "Ehwo ehwo ehwo, e e e e h w o o o, ehwu ehwa ehwi ehwe ehwo, ehwo ehwe ehwi ehwa ehwu, e e e e h w o o o!" This time, she was fairly certain that she had managed to keep the phrase intact. The question was, would it be enough?
She shook the pendant back and forth, inwardly (and outwardly!) begging the rune to turn white. It didn't turn white per say, but it certainly did change color. "Headmistress," she asked, "Is it a bad thing that my rune turned this color?" She held up the pendant to display the electric blue rune. |
