Post Harry Potter films producer Lionel Wigram talks bringing 'Cursed Child' to big screen

Longtime Warner Bros. producer Lionel Wigram - one of the first people who optioned the Harry Potter film rights almost 20 years ago with David Heyman - recently commented on whether or not he would like to see a big screen adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Wigram revealed that the final decision would naturally have to be made by author J.K. Rowling (who is currently against any thought of a film adaptation for Cursed Child), during this week's London premiere of King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (starring Fantastic Beasts' Jude Law).

Quote:
Lionel Wigram: Whatever [J.K. Rowling] wants, as far as I’m concerned, is right. I think [Cursed Child] would make a great movie. Maybe at some point she’ll be ready to do that.

I think it’s got a wonderful, long, theatrical run…it works brilliantly as a piece of theatre. I love the fact that there’s another aspect of the Harry Potter world which is completely different from everything else.

I think it’s very special as it is and there will be a time when she’s maybe ready to do it [as a movie].
The two-part stage production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the eighth and final installment in the boy wizard's story, is now open at London's West End, and will debut on Broadway from April 22, 2018.

Do note that if and when the Cursed Child is adapted to film, it won't be until the completion of the five Fantastic Beasts movies, the last of which will tentatively be released around 2024.

Warner Bros. did want us to note the following: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a stage play, with no plans for there to be a film.”
