She had been on summer California road trips to the Los Angeles area before with her muggle cousins in her aunt and uncle's car, and that was an approximately six hours drive in unbearable heat. Seriously, why was southern California so hot?
Isa chuckled along with Kane as he told her how he didn't trust himself to keep a pet alive. "You can come play with my pets if you want to. At home I've got cats, rabbits, pygmy puffs, a dog, and sometimes other animals. I bring my owl and cat to school with me. What kind of animals do you like?" She also had, like, dozens of pygmy puffs, but no one needed to know about that. Isa was still trying to figure out if she could bring a rabbit to Hogwarts.
Was it just her, or was it getting warm in here? She was totally blushing. The warm feeling in her face made her aware that her cheeks must be turning a rosy pink color. Isa twirled a section of her hair around her fingers. "I've been spending time with my family, working with my mum in the garden, helping my dad in his bookshop." During the summer she missed her friends from Hogwarts, but being with her family was even better than being with her friends. Quote:

After Derf had given her the idea to try and just rescue an animal to be a pet instead of annoying her parents to buy her one. “I found him by my house when he was a baby. He was hurt and abandoned so I sort of adopted him.” Just so the older girl knew the story. Well, most of it. Not why she’d adopted him exactly, but it hadn’t really been what she’d been asked.
Her wide-eyed look had only continued as Isa had continued rambling on about goats. She really didn’t mind the rambling. The older girl was the first person who hadn’t just immediately questioned why she wanted a goat. It only made her like her more. “Maybe a pygmy goat then. That sounds like it would always be little, too, so then people can’t complain about how much space it needs? She needed to find Derf and tell him that maybe she’d found someone else they could bring in on Operation Goat. Maybe they’d be more likely to accomplish it with more help, and Isa really seemed like she knew about goats too.
“Maybe…,” she agreed, trailing off as Isa’s attention seemed to go to the boy who had wandered close. She kind of wanted to ask her more questions about goats and just what animals she knew about in general, but she seemed distracted. At least the boy hadn’t been entirely rude, and she’d given him a smile in response to the wave. She’d heard his name too. Kane should be easy to remember. But she sort of felt left out since nobody had really said anything else to her so instead she went back to looking at the accessories. Ooh, was that a tiny scarf? "Yeah, it was fun - mostly hung out at the beach, did some surfing," Kane said with a nod. That was impressive that she remembered where his hometown was. And did she notice his tan? He was TOTALLY tan. "Oh yeah! I remember you telling me that," he added with a nod when she mentioned her family from San Francisco. Kane hadn't ever traveled up there, but he had wanted to at some point. It was like a whole different world up there - it was colder, there were more trees, and grizzly bears! "It'll be nice there this time of year. Not too cold," he added. That was the only downside of northern California. Southern California was warm almost all year. ALMOST. They definitely had their off days.
He blinked. That was like...a zoo. A literal ZOO. "Are you trying to be the next Newt Scamander?" he joked with a chuckle. Girls usually liked fluffy animals, didn't they? It sounded...messy. And expensive, because animals ate a LOT of food. "Pretty much anything. Not insects though," he added as an afterthought, turning back to the tarantula display and wrinkling his nose. Yuck.
He noticed that the girl Isa had been talking to was standing quietly to the side. Kane hadn't meant to interrupt, so he smiled nicely at her. "I'm Kane, by the way. I'm a Hufflepuff with Isa," he told her. "Are you going to Hogwarts too?" he asked. She seemed to be a year or two younger than him...
