"Javier Hernandez, but I go by Javi," he explained. "What department are you in?" he added. This guy seemed to be alright, from the brief interaction they'd just had...
Bear laughed along with the man he was talking to -- Javi -- and said, "Well, that's as good a reason as any to not like it, if you ask me." Ugly AND distasteful. What a combo. "Magical Accidents and Catastrophes," he answered, beaming. He was pretty excited about his new job, he couldn't lie. "How about you?" Maaaaaaaaaybe something nearby?! He hoped so. Javi seemed pretty cool, and Bear was in the market for some friends. Finding friends at university was so easy because you were thrown together with the same people in your department so often... But out here in the real, grown-up world? He hadn't quite figured that out yet. Quote:

And then he admitted to being lost. Who wouldn't be in this chaotic orientation? Somehow she'd imagined it to be all men in suits, talking quietly to one another over appetizers. Flying cats in bubbles, people colliding and lying in a mess on the floor and a roaring lion was not what she'd expected. But Theodore's excited expression when he realized they were in the same department made her laugh. "Yes, I know you are." Which was why she'd given him the wrong ID in the first place. "So, what's your position?" Work was something she could talk about forever and the excitement from Theodore was actually rubbing off on her.
And then he asked about everything that went on around them. Right. Amelia reluctantly glanced over at the people involved in the chaos. One of them being her boss that she'd just called adorable to his face. Kitten face. But still to his face. "Mr. Bossman." She said nodding over to the kitten (Maddox). "Maddox Quigley." She clarified as she moved on to point at the older man on the floor (Airey). "A guy with no balance who was afraid of Mr. Bossman," She pointed to the woman, storming away from the scene (Eliora). "Angry fellow Magical Accidents & Catastrophes co-worker aaand," She nodded towards the last person she would include in this little breakdown of events (Becca), "Another Departmend Head who just turned into a lion." Just in case he missed the whole 'roaring'-thing. "Apparently your typical day at the Ministry!" "Oh," Bear answered her comment about knowing his department already with a sheepish smile. "I guess that makes sense, then. I'm a Charms Developer. My dream job, basically. How about you?" He was definitely excited to actually begin work and put his skills, both magical and linguistic, to work. "Wait, did you say 'Bossman?' As in, our boss? Our department head is a cat?" Good thing Bear was a cat person... "Or, well, animagus, I guess. I assume he's not always a cat. Although I guess I wouldn't complain if he were. I like cats..." He shrugged.
Watching the commotion for a few more moments, Bear couldn't TAKE it anymore. He kept thinking about the way she'd called him Theodore. It was like her voice was italicized. And also BURNED IN HIS BRAIN.
He looked at Amelia as if surveying her trustworthiness, then looked around to see if anyone important happened to be listening. Seeing that the coast was clear (everyone was distracted by the craziness over yonder), he lowered his voice and said, "Okay, I haven't said this to anyone here yet, but I've been dying to. I HATE the name Theodore. I've never gone by Theodore. Not ever. My own mother doesn't call me Theodore. I've always been Bear, always, and that's what I like to be called, but I feel like a childhood nickname that stuck just isn't professional, and I've never had another grown-up job before so I don't know what's acceptable and what's not so I don't know what to do or if it would be okay if I went by Bear because I did while I was at university and no one seemed to mind, but then again, university is school and not an actual adult job so it's not exactly the same, is it? What do you think? Can I go by Bear? Will anyone care or think I'm stupid or immature?" He took a deep breath after spitting all of that out in a giant run-on sentence. His eyes were wide as he waited for her reply. He reeeeeeally hoped someone else would tell him it was okay to go by Bear. He hated Theodore. But he braced himself for her calling him a big dumb baby with a stupid name. HE COULD TAKE IT. (No, he couldn't. He was, in fact, a big dumb baby sometimes.)
Seemed a little trivial in comparison to the mess around them, what with people falling and turning into animals and whatnot, but still. He needed answers! |
