Personality: Katja is open-minded, fastidious, hard-working, ambitious, curious and above all, determined. She is rigidly formal, incredibly high-strung, and places a lot of importance on appearance and manners. She rarely initiates conversation, but she’s more than happy to socialize with those who approach her. The fastest way to get on her bad side is to express disapproval of her in any way; she pretends to be nice to those foolish enough to do so while secretly plotting their downfall. Although she keeps her emotions in line at all times, Katja has a heart and hides a lot of insecurities and self-doubt behind her façade of vanity.

History

Katja comes from one of the oldest (and most disgraced) wizarding families in Denmark. In 1639, Johann Westergaard, one of Katja’s ancestors, attempted to overthrow the Danish family through the use of the Imperius Curse. The Danish wizarding community experienced such backlash from the incident that even 450 years later, the Westergaard family is still largely ostracized.
Katja is the only child of Vilhelm and Margarete Westergaard, a History of Magic professor and a famous wizarding fashion designer respectively, though both of her parents had children from previous relationships. From a very young age, her father expected her to bring the Westergaard name back to its former glory. This meant she always had to be prettier, smarter, better-mannered, and above all, more popular than her peers. Katja was accepted to Durmstrang at age 11. She arrived at school hopeful she could win the respect of her classmates but soon found her ancestry a hindrance there, just as it had been back home.
When Katja was 12, both of her parents died suddenly. The explanation she was given at the time was a dragon pox outbreak, but while doing research in the library one day, she uncovered a disturbing pattern in her family history of Westergaards suddenly dying under mysterious circumstances. To this day, she’s convinced her parents were murdered, but so far has been unable to get anyone to take her seriously. For the next 5 years of her life, she was bounced from home to home, living with various members of her extended family who often criticized and underestimated her before ultimately ending up sharing a small apartment with her brother and his wife. Her family’s constant disapproval made her more determined than ever to prove herself.
Katja excelled in school, showing a particular aptitude for Ancient Runes and History of Magic, and was accepted to the Scandinavian Wizarding Academy for Magical Professionals, where she graduated with a degree in Wizarding Political Science. She worked as a part-time tutor to pay her way through university, and in her final year at S.W.A.M.P., she was offered an internship as a translator in the Danish Ministry of Magic. Her grandparents tried to dissuade her from accepting the position, reminding her that she wasn’t as practical as her sister or as charismatic as her brother and didn’t have what it takes to hold a real job, but this only made her more driven to prove them wrong.
After graduation, Katja spent a year traveling the world before returning to the Danish Ministry of Magic, this time as a Goblin Relations Mediator, a position invented to keep her from interacting with the wizarding community and bringing scandal to the Ministry. Although she was eventually able to win over some of her coworkers, Katja realized that the only way to escape her history was to leave Denmark. She applied to the British Ministry of Magic in 2089 and never looked back.
