Holding her broom with a slight air of superiority, Sinead let her eyes drift around the other students; all the other first years seemed to have pretty mixed levels of natural ability. The boy she recognised from her house, Carlton, especially seemed to be having some trouble- she saw him sneak a glance over in her direction even as some Gryffindor girl tried to give up (so much for being strong and brave in the face of adversity). Her mother had told her not to be smug, though, so she tried to school her face to neutrality. Except for a glare at some older Slytherin who turned up late and cost them points?! Did he have no house pride? And why was her own head of house taking away points from them, didn't he want them to win?
Losing house points was a cardinal sin.
For now, though, there didn't seem much to do except practice again, as Mr McLeod advised. And then maybe she could win some house points back. Laying her broom neatly out on the floor before her again, she summoned it again, and again it rose to her hand with something of a slow, reluctant demeanour. Close enough.
Looking over to her housemate as he celebrated having elicited a wiggle from his broom, she decided that some of her profound wisdom was called for in this situation.
"You just have to be really determined," she suggested, taking a step towards him and trying not to trip over her own broom or stab anybody with it. "If you know that you're in charge, then the broom will too." Maybe she should teach this class. She sounded quite professional really, didn't she?
