"Okay Professor, upward swish, point my wand in the direction I want the wood to go and downward swish to set it back down. " She repeated as she watched as he moved to stand by his desk.

Azura took a deep breath as she looked at the Professor and closed her eyes for a moment. Centering herself and quieting her mind and focusing fully on what she was about to do.

"All right, are you ready? " She asked Professor Marchand as she took her wand and carefully did an upward swish as she said "Levio - Lignum - Maxima!" She smiled a little as her spell.. actually started to work??

Ohhh!! Yayyyy!!

She moved her wand just slightly to the side.. and then carefully put the Professor down.

Phew!

Gaston wasn't even the least bit worried about Miss Snow practicing her spell on him. There was nothing she could do that could hurt him more than he already had been, and more to the point, he believed in his student. He gave the girl an encouraging nod as she repeated the wand movements back to him. She had this!

He waited for the effects of the spell, and the floor beneath him suddenly rose with him still standing on it, just like he knew it would. He shot the Ravenclaw a look that said, See, I knew you could do it! "Congratulations, Miss Snow," he said the moment he was back on the ground, giving her a triumphant smile... the first genuine one he'd given anybody today. "I think you have the makings of a wonderful charms developer!" He was practically bursting with pride for his student, all thoughts of his own sadness forgotten.

Or had grown ups been lying to her all along?

... was it bad that she had more questions and thoughts? Char listened to the professor's answers. It just still sounded so.... so simple. The languages stuff though....

"I don't think that bit about the languages does make sense, professor." She said apologetically. Would she get in trouble? She hoped not but thought it was important to say. "I think that's a super Euro-centric view." So if he was trying to simplify his answer to make it easier for a kid like her to understand, it wasn't quite working. "There are thousands of languages in the world, and hundreds more that are extinct except through magic, it doesn't make sense to me that only Latin is easy or generalized." She thought about it, chewing over it, and then added, "Is it.... maybe its more reflective of what languages the individual understands? And you probably couldn't easily use your native, living tongue, because then communication would be a problem and stuff too... and if you don't have a super good understanding of a language, then it could make sense that using it could end up a more complex spell, because you'd also be having to teach your mind to associate meanings with a brand new word." Charlotte mused out loud.

Still, she would try something here. And a thought came to her. What if all of these, in every possible combination, was already an invented spell, and they weren't actually inventing anything new? That would make sense wouldn't it? That would also explain why they didn't have to bother with adjusting the case for the Latin words too. Char looked at the list.

So... something like Ligobiblus could be used for book binding maybe? and Levioliquidum could be used to levitate liquids without a container? That could be a useful one. She would work on that. It SOUNDED good anyway. Char wrote a few notes about it.

So... the next step was to try it right? Maybe she'd have as much immediate success as Azura had!

Gaston blinked a couple of times as Miss Kettleburn spoke up again. At this point he wasn't sure if the girl was genuinely curious about the subject or actively trying to catch him off guard to see how he'd react, but he decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. After all there was no rule that stopped her from speaking her mind. He stared at the floor, embarrassed with himself for not being able to explain his points the right way. Merlin, why couldn't be be more articulate? This time instead of attempting another badly worded explanation, he just listened as Miss Kettleburn riddled it out for herself. "Yes, I think you're right," he said, nodding in agreement after she'd finished speaking. "An individual's level of understanding has a lot to do with it."

He returned to his desk, once again writing in his little black book. He only looked up periodically to make sure his students weren't hurting themselves. He absentmindedly glanced at his watch... time for class to be over. "Alright, class! Time is up!" he said. "For those of you who wish to continue experimenting, the practice room is open. You've all done a wonderful job today!"

He held his book in front of his face to hide his eyes from the students filing out of the room, eyes that looked even sadder than ever. Merlin, this class had been a disaster from start to finish! Students disengaged, his poor wording confusing everyone... some professor he was! Right now he just wanted to be alone with his self-doubt...

OOC: Thanks for coming, everybody! I'll leave the thread open for a few more hours for those of you who want to post your charries leaving.
