For a few moments, all he could do was gape dumbly at her, still in a state of disbelief that she wasn't disgusted by him. "I-I understand," he finally stammered after her words had time to sink in. He even managed a small smile, but it was gone almost instantly.

WHAT?! Why was Rosalyn apologizing to him? Didn't she know she had nothing to be sorry for? His mouth dropped open, and the sadness in his eyes was momentarily replaced with shock and confusion. "What for?" he blurted out before he could stop himself. "I'm the one who started all this! I should've just kept my big mouth shut, but... I knew if I didn't tell you then, I'd probably never pluck up the courage to..." He had to pause to give his words time to catch up with his rambling thoughts and whirlwind emotions. "Oh, Merlin! You weren't supposed to find out like this!" Actually she wasn't supposed to find out at all, but that was beside the point. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Well, now you know..."

Gaston stared at the floor, unable to meet Rosalyn's eyes. When he did finally force himself to look up, he saw the look on her face was even sadder than ever, and he hated himself for causing it. It was like they were locked in some cruel battle to see which of them could make the other feel worse! He wanted to hug her, but he was afraid he'd drive her away if he did. Still he had to do something! "Oh, Rose, please don't be sad," he begged, his voice barely more than a whisper. He was sure that if he tried to talk louder, he'd burst out sobbing. "Please... not because of me..."

He looked down to find that at some point, he'd taken Rosalyn's hand in both of his own. When had that happened? He gasped, horrified by what he'd done, and let go abruptly. If she wasn't scared away before, she certainly would be now! So what was going to happen now? Was this going to be the part where she turned him down and broke his heart even further? Or was there some faint glimmer of hope that she'd give him a chance?
