Maybe she had been avoiding him too at first, but that was only because he had shocked her with what he had said at the reception. Then she had wondered if he would avoid her for the rest of the time at school and that made her sad because she missed talking to him.
The sunglasses were rather surprising, but she was not going to draw attention to them. Nope. She was too worried about him to really care about that! He was obviously very sad - which made her feel WORSE - but Rosalyn didn't understand why because she hadn't even said anything to him. Chaos had broken loose and the party had ended before she even had the chance to make sense of things. She wanted to ask him what was going on, but decided not to. At least not yet. Instead she said, "I haven't seen you around the castle in days." She didn't like that at all. Gaston's blue eyes blinked in surprise behind his glasses at the sound of Rosalyn's next words. It wasn't what she'd said that was so shocking but the way she said it... as if not seeing him around was a bad thing. He couldn't imagine why, though. He thought she'd be glad not to have creepy Gaston Marchand admiring her from afar!
Could that mean...? No, he shouldn't get his hopes up. He was sure she was only trying to let him down gently. Sweet, kind Rosalyn... still trying to spare his feelings even after the awkward mess he'd thrown them into! He didn't know why he was surprised; that kindness was what had won his heart all the way back at the start of the term.
Gaston knew he had to say something, but what? Rose deserved an explanation - and an apology - the least he could do was give her that! He sighed as his mind searched for the right words. "I know," he finally said, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm so sorry..." More than you'll ever know, his mind silently added. "I just... didn't think you'd want anything to do with me after I..." He had no idea how to finish that sentence. Shocked her? Embarrassed her? Disgusted her?
His head bowed, spilling his black hair into his face, and he suddenly had to remove his glasses to pinch at the corners of his eyes. Instead of putting them back on, however, he stuffed the sunglasses into his jacket pocket and allowed Rosalyn to see the sadness reflected in his own eyes, eyes every bit as red and puffy as they'd been at the reception. So much for not letting emotion get the better of him again!
