| we might try another tomorrow after work if the lesson's still open ;; ♥Dunkin | Pixie's Precious Pea | kpop goddess | sneaky sounder | forever slytherin♥ It was time for the actual Transfiguration part of the Transfiguration lesson. Jaemin made sure to block the edge of the desk as he looked up at Ichihara, listening intently to everything she was saying. It seemed that it was helpful if they were naming them... Jaemin flicked a glance down at the caterpillar, still walking along his hand, and considered naming it for a long moment before deciding against it. While it would be nice for it to have a name... the original thoughts on naming it still stood. What if the next person to have it decided to name it something else? That would get super confusing for the poor little caterpillar.
He didn't want to confuse the weird little green hairy thing.
The small Slytherin did dutifully copy down the spells for all of the bugs, and made notes of some of the things the professor said. Envision the transfiguration, and how the caterpillar would go from a squishy hairy legged worm to a banana leaf. Make sure to focus on what it would look like afterward. He could do that easily enough, he was sure... he looked down at the caterpillar as it climbed down off his hand, and watched it as it moved across the desktop. This was going to be one of the easier bugs to transfigure, and it was very obvious considering what it looked like now versus what it would come to look like.
Having grown up around plants, Jaemin did know what banana leaves looked like. His caterpillar, he was sure, would be much smaller than a regular one... absently, without looking at what he was doing, Jaemin doodled the outline of a banana leaf on his notes, making it roughly the same size as the caterpillar. It was the one art thing he was really good at and actually didn't mind doing... drawing leaves or plant diagrams. Hooray for being a Herbologist. He moved the notes down onto the desktop, next to the caterpillar, then picked the thing up and very carefully deposited it on top of the outline.
"You're gonna be a bit on the small side, but it's okay. Banana leaves have lots of uses even if they're small," he whispered, running a finger lightly down the back of the squirmy green caterpillar. It was easy enough to envision it... the caterpillar's green filling in between the weird hairy parts, becoming solid and smooth, filling out the curve of the leaf shape. The colour might tweak just a bit, but that was because his caterpillar looked so light-coloured, and banana leaves were a bit darker. He stared at the little creature, humming softly to himself as he unconsciously moved his wand back and forth. "I'm gonna try and turn you into a leaf in a minute, okay? It isn't gonna hurt. You won't even realise it happened. Just stay still..."
He glanced at the spot in his notes that held the spell, not wanting to look up too far in case the caterpillar got frisky and decided to take off. The incantation looked easy enough, but Jaemin gave it a few turns on his tongue just in case. He didn't want to say it wrong and end up messing up the poor caterpillar. "Fo LEO. Fo leo. Follio. Muse-uh... no. Muse-a. Museeeee-a. Follio-musa. Fooooo leeeeeooooo muuuuuuuuse aaaaaaa."
Easier than quite a few spells he'd worked on this term. The wand movement was easy as well, and one that didn't require him to practice, though Jaemin gave a few experimental swishes with his wand anyway. Just to make sure they were decisive enough, because he didn't want to find out what happened if his swipes were tentative.
He wanted to get it right.
"Okay, are you ready?" he whispered, leaning down close to the caterpillar and giving it another gentle nudge. It had been waddling back toward the books, but the nudge made it stop and stand still, so he wouldn't accidentally cast and hit his desk and end up with a leaf desk. Though... that would be kinda cool. He gave the caterpillar one more pat before pointing his wand at it and firmly speaking the incantation, pairing it off with as decisive a right swish as he could muster. "Follio-musa."
The caterpillar shuddered, and for a moment Jaemin was afraid he had done it wrong and the small thing was about to turn into something weird. The shudder continued though, and it almost seemed like... the caterpillar was shaking itself into a leaf. It changed, a little on the slow side, one end to the other. The hairy parts spread out, like they were turning into little fans, and melded together, the line along the caterpillar's back fusing into one long stem. The little leg parts for the hairy bits duplicated themselves over, becoming the pattern of lines that made up the top of the leaf. Jaemin stared at it for a second as it went still on his desk, then slowly reached to pick it up and flip it over.
It was lighter than the banana leaves he had seen before, more of a yellow-green than a green-green, but it was definitely a leaf. He ran one finger along it, lightly touching the soft springy-ness of it, and looked up at the professor. He'd managed the caterpillarrrrr. |
