The mention of non-verbal magic from Leo caused Daxton to surprise him by actually looking right up into his eyes, for a moment before he retrieved a notebook and pen and started to scribble down a long message for him to undoubtedly read. He had managed to catch the boy's interest and draw him out of his bubble for a little while at least. Leo felt just a little accomplished. This was worthy of Cassie knowledge later that night.

Taking the notepad from Daxton he read the message through silently before he handed the notepad back and responded quietly. "I agree with you. Nothing is impossible if you are willing to put down the effort needed to practice hard and consistently. You might be right that non-verbal magic would come easier to you then to your peers who talk and cast spells verbally every day. You have another view of things than many of your peers do and you should use that to your advantage. Do the professors give you extra time to master the spells being taught in classes?"

Leo did hold a silent hope though that eventually Daxton would be able to speak verbally with those around him. He just needed more practice and more confidence in his voice and abilities. "If you are interested I can help you practice non-verbal spells after dinner a few times a week? Like a private tutor?" Why Daxton's gaze kept flitting elsewhere, around them at the other books made Leo wonder if he was up to something fishy.

Kitridge's statement was met with a long pause from Daxton, followed by a very small, almost imperceptible shrug of the shoulders. There were plenty of impossible things. To say that nothing was impossible was inaccurate, and that was true even with magic introduced to the equation. But even the things that were possible with the right amount of effort and hard work, not to mention intelligence, were practically impossible for the majority of people in the world, because most people were utterly useless.

Nevertheless, it was true that Daxton was likely to find non-verbals much easier to accomplish than his classmates. That was just simple logic; his entire world was non-verbal, and he had a very strong mind, and he knew it. He did not need anyone to reassure him of what he could accomplish. To Kitridge's question, about extra time in lessons, Daxton simply shook his head. He was neither allotted, nor did he require extra time in classes. In fact, he tended to avoid practical classes the majority of the time, but if Kitridge did not know that, Daxton would not be the one to tell him.

While they stood there before the bookshelves, Daxton again turned his attention to the books he had collected. He moved his own notebook to the bottom of the pile, before opening up the now-on-top text and flipping through some of the pages. Looking busy, looking occupied. It was not lost on Daxton that he was currently alone with his Head of House and it was clear that Kitridge might take advantage of this situation to bring up some of the trouble Daxton had recently found himself in. Though he was not necessarily scared of any further repercussions, it just meant hassle. Aside from anything else, Daxton was still very much on his guard.

With this in mind, he started to take half a step away from Kitridge, but the last question had him stopping in his tracks, and looking up in surprise. Working on non-verbals with Kitridge? A private tutor? Even Daxton could not deny that that would be of some benefit, and might even speed the process along. But there were definite disadvantages too, including opening himself up for more opportunities to be questioned about any trouble he might end up in, or inadvertently letting Kitridge learn more about him, more information that could be used against him. Not to mention that accepting the offer would mean accepting help, which was something that Daxton would outright refuse to do.

It was for that reason that - despite wanting almost nothing more than to manage non-verbal magic - Daxton shook his head fervently, denying the offer of help in favour of his dignity. It was not unlike his refusal to let Primeaux give him any assistance; Daxton wanted nobody to claim credit for any future greatness. In his stubborn and troubled teenage mind, the most important thing was to rely on nobody, to be totally independent, no matter what.
