Then the ropes happened. And the placid, docile mindless Hadley was gone. She trashed and strained against the ropes with a gurgling sound escaping her throat that may or may not have been "Boooook!" The trashing grew more frantic. She had to be free. Had to find the book. Had to bring it to the forest. BOOK!

Free. Book. Get book. Free hands. Get book. BOOOK. Hadley Denaker was thrashing to free herself so hard that if she hadn't hurt herself already she would soon. Not only that, but she had been tied up over the books on the floor, many of which already suffering damage from the girl's wild attempts to free herself. "BOOOOOOOOOK!" It was more a moan than a word.
It was really creepy that Haddie didn't respond to anything that Penelope said. Why was Haddie saying book? Was she looking for books? A particular book? Haddie was hurting herself and damaging books. Penelope had to do something. If she undid the ropes, Haddie might run away or further damage the books. Pointing her wand at Haddie, Penelope did the first thing she could think of. "Immobulus!" There was no getting away yet Haddie. Hopefully Haddie was alright. It scared Penelope to see Haddie this way. The worst thing was the blank look in Haddie's eyes. It looked like Haddie wasn't there. Haddie's body was there but her mind wasn't. This scared Penelope more than anything she could remember. Hopefully Mr. Kitridge would be here to save her soon. Penelope looked at the for now detained and unresponsive Haddie. "Was that you upstairs, making the mess? It's not nice to go through other people's things. Absolute chaos up there. Clothes and books and all sorts of things everywhere. Why, Haddie? What happened to you? Why are you looking for a book?" She already knew that Haddie wouldn't respond. Orion had discovered many things to chew on, and Penelope was pretty sure that he had stolen some of her things before she had been able to clean everything up. Most of Penelope's things had been put away so the cat couldn't get to them, but it was too late for whatever Orion had already taken. She hadn't done a full inventory of her possessions yet, but at least one pair of socks was missing, presumed chewed.
