| 2 Lovely™ | Captain Hurted | Ariana's Bane | Resident Antagonist | Unparalleled Delight Daxton was fairly certain of the possibility that one of those comments from the professor had been addressed to him, but he was not one to acknowledge any sort of positive attention, and so he simply ignored it.
He had been working at crushing the tortoise shell for quite some time now, trying to get the task done as quickly as possible - due to the fact that his utter lack of stamina would have him tiring out quickly - but not wanting to rush the job and screw it up. The fact that he had very little muscle on his arms made this tricky, even after the onset of puberty had granted Daxton with a little extra unearned strength. On and on he went, using the pestle and his own innate aggression to grind up the shell in the mortar, not satisfied until he was left with a powder a little finer than the consistency of caste sugar. He put down both mortar and pestle and inspected his hands, both of which had now gone similar shades of red after working so aggressively.
According to the information on the board, that was all the ingredients prepped, though he still had replacements and extras set aside for any mishaps, strokes of brilliance, or surges of curiosity. Now, though, Daxton read through the instructions once more, thinking, calculating, and make an impressed face at the thought of all that stirring. If anything would have him failing this potion, it would be the stirring. Daxton tended to tire easily; his stirs would not be uniform if he managed to keep going throughout the entire potion, and the result would be sloppy. He did not like the idea of failing in a room full of people, not if he had actually tried. That was half of the reason he never attempted magic in class, but waited until he could be alone.
Maybe he would stick with experimenting. It was likely everyone would still think he had failed after trying, but he would know the truth, at least.
For the moment, Daxton sat and worked on his notes, writing down some theories, questions he was not able to ask out loud, and observations, things he had thought of or simply noticed happening in class from his quiet corner at the back of the room. SPOILER!!: Notebook Aging Potion Ingredients
- 100ml Red Wine
- 10ml Prune Juice
- 2g Hairy fungus, mashed
- 2g Tortoise Shell, powdered
- 5g Caterpillar, sliced
- 1 Bat Tongue, diced Instructions
1. Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.
2. Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)
3. Immediately add the Hairy Fungus and continue to stir clockwise for ten minutes. (The mixture will slowly fade to a lighter purple/brown) (Note: any stirrer is fine)
4. Continuing to stir clockwise, add the tortoise shell. (The mixture will be a creamy color)
5. After eight minutes, remove the cauldron from the heat and add the caterpillar and bat tongue, making sure to continue to stir the solution in a clockwise motion for five minutes, until it changes to a creamy green colour.
6. As the potion cools, it will turn emerald green. Once it is completely cooled (about fifteen to twenty minutes), you may cease dispense the potion into appropriate vials for storage. Characteristics: Emerald Green Level: Advanced Information: The effects are dosage based; the more ingested, the older one will age Notes- Theory: Continuous clockwise stirring, no anti-clockwise stirring. It is likely that stirring constantly and exclusively in a clockwise direction is what prompts the 'forward action' of the Aging Potion. That is, stirring clockwise mimics the forward action of the clock, winding the clock forward, moving time forward.
- Theory: Would faster stirs - and therefore more stirs in the allotted time - mean being aged higher, or is this only dependent on the quality of the potion or the amount taken? Would any anti-clockwise stirs nullify the potion's effects?
- Theory: Would exclusively anti-clockwise stirring create a variation of De-Aging Potion, perhaps with slightly adjusted ingredients? E.g.: the liquid ingredients are those often associated with an older age, would these need to be substituted? (To research later)
- Theory: Could one be aged so much they are aged straight to their death? Is there a limit to the age one can reach using the potion? (Note: Newton aged sixty was aged to one hundred with the potion, is this the limit? Does the potion have a maximum number of years added, or is it relevant to the drinker's age?)
- Theory: Could one predict the time of their own natural death, if the potion refuses to age their body past a certain point?
- Are chronic and/or degenerative illnesses worsened/progressed with application of the potion?
- Is every aspect of the body aged, including the brain and other organs? In the ageing process, does every cell regenerate and die? Is the aged version of the drinker made of completely new cells, as they would be if they aged naturally?
- Note: Hadley Denaker de-aged. Why?
- Note: Abby Valentine aged up after contact with the potion/without ingesting it. Why?
When all that was finished, Daxton sat back and looked right up at the professor, slightly annoyed. He had been thinking about trying to devise away to get the old man up and out of his seat, to see what he could do to make Newton - who seemed dead set on sitting and not moving - to move. But Hadley Denaker had got there first, and it irked Daxton. It would have been fun to try in lieu of, or in the process of, brewing the Ageing Potion.
Because he was still very much opposed to trying and failing in a room full of people. Daxton stayed sat at his workstation for the moment, elbow propped on the desk, leaning his chin on his hand, and continued observing the others in the class all the while wishing that none of them were even there. Mostly his attention was drawn to the situation with now much younger Denaker, the professor, and a fretting Katherine Moss.
Amusing as it was, Daxton was still ever so bored. He looked at his potion ingredients again, and again tried to decide between sitting out of brewing the potion, or trying and experimenting and thereby almost certainly intentionally failing. He furrowed his brow, deep in thought, trying to play out the various scenarios in his head, possible changes to make to the potion, all the while looking intentionally unapproachable should any older student think it was okay to come and offer their assistance.
Spoiler alert: it was not.
