It took soooooooo much effort to get the tortoise shell broken into small pieces. SO MUCH. Jaemin just kept smashing at it for a while longer until it was in small shards, and then set the pestle down for a minute. HUUUUUUU... he needed a break. But he didn't have time to mess about, so... he set the tortoise shell in the mortar aside, carefully perching the pestle on top, and pulled the caterpillar in close.

Another scourgify, just to make sure everything was clean, and the small boy reached for the small knife that he carried with all of his potions gear. Slicing these would be easy enough, and then he could get back to finishing the tortoise shell off.

Sliiiiiiiice. Sliiiiiiiiice. He made some neat little caterpillar slices, trying his best to make sure they weren't too thin; he almost felt bad, because the poor little caterpillar was now all chopped up, but... it was giving its little caterpillar life for science. For MAGIC science. So... it was okay, right? Right.

Maybe he would dice up the tongue too, while he was at it. He arranged his caterpillar bits into a neat little pile, scrubbed at the spot he'd cut it up on, and wiped down the knife before reaching for the tongue.

Ew. Gross. That poor bat.

Wrinkling his nose, Jaemin looked toward the front of the classroom - well, more at the back of the student in front of him, really - before pressing the knife to the tongue long-ways. That was how the professor had said to do it, right? Cut it in half, and then cut the halves in smaller bits. He might have sawed at it a little, but... for some reason, these tongues were weirdly tough. Was his tongue like this?!

...hopefully nobody ever did this to his tongue. He didn't need to know.

Humming to himself, Jaemin did his best to dice. The bits were uneven, but... it was the best he could do. He was just a small twelve year old boy, after all. Dad had done all the intricate things over the summer... he had just done his best to do the rest and follow the instructions well.

Niiiiiice little pile of tongue bits though. Jaemin made sure they were separated from everything else and pushed them away from himself, pulling the mortar & pestle back in. Just a bit more to go with this... he went to work on it again, grinding away to reduce the shell to as fine a powder as he could make.
