And Professor Newton was in a chair. He was never sitting when they came into class. "Hey, Professor Newton...why are you in a chair?" It was a valid question, even if it didn't sound like one. She grabbed her lab coat and made her way up to the front. To Mossy, actually. Not Rachel which was her norm. Well, being in the front did have the benefit of being able to get Professor Newton's help with whatever potion they were doing today.
Sitting down next to her best frenemy, Hadley smiled. "I've made up my mind, Moss. I'm not giving up on our friendship, so sorry, not gonna do it." 'It' in this case was Hads staying away from Mossy forever. "Besides, you need me. You just don't realize it. But," she added, quickly, before the Mosster could leave, or shove Hadley out of her chair. "Me sitting here means you get to see what a total disaster I am at potions, thus proving you're better than me to everyone, including Newton!" Come on, Mossy, you know you can't pass that up. Huh? Katherine was organising her working area: she first took out her potions notebook and found the right page, then she set out the quill and the scales, gloves, googles, spoons, stirrers... After she was done with putting everything in their exact place - she had come up with this plan after literally spending one full night thinking about where the material should be for the FULLEST efficiency - she took out her wand to begin cleaning every utensil - except, she happened.
Katherine's lips returned the smile back, because the professor was watching and she would never show her true face disrespect around them; but her eyes were as hostile as ever.
Friendship? F R I E N D S H I P ?
Katherine couldn't help but snort. Since when had they been friends, exactly? Because clearly, Katherine had missed a BIG point of her life.
But - no. She wasn't going to react, she wasn't going to retort, she wasn't going to care; because clearly that was what Haddie wanted. A reaction. However, if Katherine didn't give her that, she might just get bored and leave her alone. So, after what felt like an eternity (which was only a second or so in reality), Katherine's face relaxed and she shrugged. "Whatever floats your boat, friend," she said, and fought with her inner pride to tell Haddie that she would NEVER ever need a loser. No. Besides, she did like the idea of shining in comparison with Haddie. It was too good to reject. It did have the risk of being contaminated with something deadly should Haddie mess up her potion, but it was a risk worth taking. Actually, come to think about it... this was better - she could look after Haddie's cauldron TOO, and the professor WOULD notice how perfect Haddie's potion turned out to be, and logically make the connection.
She did need Haddie, after all.
Before she could say something to Haddie, however, she caught Blaise's nod and although she no longer wanted to talk to him, she waved back; mainly because she didn't really need to be his enemy... now. And then the professor began, and she took her notebook in her hands to catch (literally) everything the professor said.
... ... ... yeah, obviously it was an ageing potion ... ... ... she copied the ingredients and steps as the professor explained they had 90 minutes, and once she was done, she looked around to see which older students had showed up... none that she liked, to be honest. She didn't know most of them, and the people she did know weren't really older. The only person she could ask was Penelope, and she was... not TiaMarie. Besides, a voice whispered in her mind, why not do it alone? You know you can do it, you brewed potions over your skills last year... you can do it, and the professor will notice you. This is your chance. Do it alone, and shine.
She grabbed her wand like Haddie did, and begun cleaning the utensils and her cauldron. "I assume you're going to work alone too," she said to Haddie as she turned to look at the girl with a different expression (which was the expression of when people realised they could profit from something), "and let's not kid ourselves, you're going to make a mistake. So my offer is: do you want to work together so that I check what you do as well and you'll turn in a correct potion?" Hmmmmmmm, Hadley Denaker?
Not to look too excited (but oh she WAS!), she began readying the ingredients she was going to use in the order they would be used. |
