Everyone got a nervous smile greeting from Haddie. Rachel didn't need a formal greeting since they were practically sisters and she sat down next to her. Goodbye friends. Haddie was going to miss you all when she died in an hour or so. Did it count as suicide if you didn't mean to kill yourself, you were just doing your potions assignment? "Professor Newton? Will you see that Asher gets a good home if I don't survive my potion?" This was an important and legit question given her dismal history at both cooking and by extension potioneering. Why did they need to bring their pets then, if they weren't the ones inges.... OOOOOOOOOOOOH! Haddie's eyes went wide with excitement now. "ARE WE MAKING POTIONS TO BECOME ANIMALS!?" This was her dream. Being an animagus was her dream and anything that helped with that or gave her a chance to experience being an animal for a bit while she worked on being an animagus was the greatest assignment ever! "You!" Haddie whipped around to face Rachel, sticking a very animated and demanding finger obnoxiously in Freckle's face. "You are helping me to successfully brew this thing, no excuses! Got it!?" This would be the most important potions assignment she ever got. And she was not going to fail at it like she had all the other potions. Art let out a nervous little chuckle, and scratched his chin. “Miss. Denaker, you have my word that n-nothing will… will be happening to you. I’ve been very thorough in checking the ingredients and… and they’re… w-well, they’re fine.” He hoped that might reassure the young lady a bit, because it had definitely taught him the lesson that Peeves was around and could strike at any moment.
He listened to her thoughts as to why they were asked to bring their pets. “No, you’re not becoming pets today,” he said in reply, though it probably did seem like the obvious reason. SPOILER!!: Dot Quote:

Yeah, bud. Know how you feel.
Dot was never sure where to sit in Potions anymore, not without Sophie and now without Kyroh, so she just chose a seat at random and tucked Nimbus under the workstation for now. He'd maybe go to sleep.
"Hullo, Professor. I hope it's something to improve their coat health or something and not a poison to test on them. Because... my kneazle already hates me today, and I don't want to encourage that behavior." Great Scott, Art was thankful that Miss. Wojack-Gusey’s pet kneazle was locked in a cage. He sensed Madame Curie’s fear, and gave her a little stroke on her head. “Good morning Miss. Wojack-Gusey,” he said as the young Prefect walked through the doors. Art nodded at the thought. A potion to improve coat health… hmm. “Not today, no,” he said. “I-interesting idea though.” SPOILER!!: Rachel Quote:
Originally Posted by FearlessLeader19 There was a fascinating amount of pets being brought into the classroom. Rachel watched with utmost interest as eat of her classmates entered. Rachel knew that her friend owned worms that she had left behind at home. The dark haired Eagle waved to Kitty then smiled a greeting at Olivia.
"Hello, Sam. Of course not. You and Ollie are quite welcome to join us.'' She smiled and indicated the seat on her other side before turning to Haddie again whom she had managed to slip a nervous smile before she had turned to Sam. Rachel reached out to pat her best friend on her arm. "It's okay. They'll all be fine,'' she reassured Haddie just as much as she was trying to reassure herself. She understood the demand from the other girl quite well. It was quite understandable as Haddie cared quite a lot for Asher. "I'll do my utmost best.'' ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Rachel pulled her Puff's cage closer to her as Professor Art commenced the class. She didn't know why she did that; it was more on instinct than anything else, really. But she was very apprehensive about letting Puff be a part of this lesson. She raised her hand to offer her own suggestion. "Perhaps we need their fur, feather or hair to add to the potion we will be brewing today, Professor.'' “We will definitely be needing a sample of your pets!” he replied, gleeful that she had made the guess. Spotting the rat moving about to the professors head she gave a small laugh. "Hello there Madame Curie, don't you worry Hagan here won't hurt you," she was positive of it. He just wasn't that kind of cat.
With Hagan asleep inside his cage right beside her chair on the floor and her table set with everything she needed she slid from her chair and went to grab her lab coat. She hadn't gotten it earlier due to focusing on getting her furry companion settled in. Slipping the lap coat on and fastening it's buttons she returned to her seat once again. She smiled hearing Haddie ask about transforming into animals. That would be a good guess but somehow she didn't think so. Not today and even when they did make a potion like that last term they hadn't needed their pets. Whatever was the reason though the snake was sure it would be entertaining.[/COLOR] Art grinned as Hady reassured his Madame Curie about her pet, Hagan. “Well, I’m sure she feels better already. She d-doesn’t usually get to-to see a cat up close, unfortunately.” SPOILER!!: Sam Quote:

Though Madam Curie wouldn't possibly let anything happen to a fellow rat, right?
As for why they were asked to bring their pets? Sam hadn't a clue. She'd had a flick through her potions book after seeing the announcement posted, but she hadn't found anything specific. One type of pet, maybe...but not a whole menagerie's worth.
Which led her to think it was something about them being familiars. Except that wouldn't work for Kitty, who didn't have one to bring and had just been offered a random toad.
HMM.
A guess then. "Cos our famili-ehs make us strongeh? 'n' dat'll 'elp our potion?" Art thought about Miss. Tyler’s answer for a brief moment. “Hmm… in a way, Miss. Tyler, yes.” He was pleased with that answer. SPOILER!!: Ariadne Quote:

Speaking of which...why did they need their pets? "There's LOTS of potions dealing with animals!" Ariadne said, raising her hand. "Are we brewing the Animal Calming Draught, Mutatio Animalia, or Comantis Bestiarius?! Because all of those would need our animals to be here!" Ariadne usually wasn't so precise with these kinds of answers, but when you grow up with a potions lab in your house, you kind of get an idea of what's out there. Art smiled at the young lady, who seemed to be a very keen Potioneer. “Not today, unfortunately, Miss. Greingoth, b-but very good suggestions,” he said with a nod. SPOILER!!: Blaise Quote:
Originally Posted by DaniDiNardo Blaise didn't have a pet, his parents didn't think he would be responsible enough to keep it alive without them behind him every half an hour reminding him to take care of it. He didn't have to feed or clean them but he supposed that was the best part. They would never die if he forgot. "Morning Professor." He chirped, heading for the wall that hung the lab coats. The boy shrugged his onto his shoulders then went to take his seat.
Just as he sat, he heard the Professor's question. Admittedly it was one he'd been wondering about for the whole walk down. "No idea Professor but I don't have a pet. Can I still stay?"
At this point in the term and his young life, Blaise Bellaire had skipped enough classes to not necessarily be bothered if he had to leave one but at the same time, Potions was neat and not at all Charms so he...kinda wanted to stay, okay?
Please? “Good morning Mr. Bellaire,” Art greeted the young man. Ah. He was another one who didn’t have a pet. “Not to worry Mr. Bellaire, of course you can stay! I h-have some toads that I brought for-for those of you who didn’t have a pet.” He picked out one of the cages, with a toad inside, and walked it over to Mr. Bellaire. SPOILER!!: Elora Quote:

Elora said in a quiet voice. She shrugged. That was all she could come up with and now she would just have to wait until we found out. Art nodded approvingly at the young ladies’ suggestion. “We will d-definitely be needing a part of them, yes,” he said with a smile. SPOILER!!: Kitty Quote:
Originally Posted by Goblinfrog "Thank you," said Kitty, taking the cage with the toad from Art's hands and looking inside at the rather cute toad. "Does he have a name?" She carried both cages back to the front row of chairs, placed them on a desk and quickly putt on her white lab coat before sitting down. Nearby she saw that the Gryffindor boy whose name she still didn't know didn't have a pet either. "I didn't have a pet either," she told him, showing him her toad. "But Art gave me this toad."
When the professor asked the first question; she was surprised by the suggestion that many of the students were giving that they were going to turn into animals. Transfiguration was not something she had ever done before and she was worried about what might go wrong, especially after last lesson. She stared at her toad and wondered what it would be like be trapped as a toad forever.
But then Ariadne's guesses helped calm her down a bit. "I think it's the animal calming drought too Professor Art. That's a very useful potion to know how to make. Imagine you were walking down a street and a wild dog attacked you?" Art nodded to the young lady, “Not a problem,” he said. Toads were the easiest thing to find within the surrounding area of Hogwarts. “Err… n-no he doesn’t. You can give him one if you like,” though he wasn’t entirely sure if it was male or female.
Art nodded as he listened to her suggestion. “I-I’ll have to put that on the list, I think, but that’s not what we will be brewing today.” SPOILER!!: Azura Quote:

She raised her hand.. "Are we either going to transform into them? Or be able to talk to them? " yeah.. Those were her only thoughts really..
Who even knew if they were right?? Art smiled at the young lady. “Yes! We are going to be able to talk to them! Well… n-not exactly talk to them but… understand them,” he said. He was very glad that someone had guessed, almost exactly, what they would be doing today. He closed the door to the classroom to get the class officially started, then on the blackboard, he wrote; Quote:

He smiled around the class, hoping they were as excited as he was. “Now, s-sometimes it doesn’t work. It helps significantly to have a connection with your pet.” He glanced over at Miss. Valentine and Mr. Bellaire, “B-but you should still get something, even if you don’t have a connection.” Some brain wave thought or something at least. “I uhh… I hope everyone has cleaned their tools already.” He turned his back to the class as he wrote out the ingredients required for the potion on the board. There was enough up the front for each person to get each ingredient in separate dishes. “A-and I have a supply of these 1ml syringes, two each! 3. Gather the 3 sprigs of dried Fluxweed, and roughly crush in mortar and pestle. Only enough to increase the surface area, then add to the cauldron
4. Simmer for a further 3 minutes
5. Stir with a wooden stirrer, three times, clockwise “N-now I’ll be brewing the entire potion with you today, and I’ll talk you through it step by step. First, we need to add six cups of water to the cauldron.” He measured six cups of water from the tap and added it into his cauldron. “Then we need to start a small flame underneath our cauldrons. Whichever way you like,” he added, whilst he lit his Bunsen burner, fiddled with the flame, and put his cauldron over the flame. “We need to simmer the water for five minutes,” he said, and set a timer.
When the timer went off to signify five minutes, he continued. “We add 15 Belladonna leaves to the cauldron.” He plucked 15 leaves of Belladonna from the sprigs, and added them to the cauldron. “Next, we need to add our three sprigs of Fluxweed into our mortar and pestle, and just give them a very rough mash. We only want to increase the surface area, so it doesn’t need to be anything too fine.” He gave it a few mashes with the pestle and tipped the contents into the water. “Now we need to simmer this for three minutes, to allow the water to seep the contents from the leaves.” He set another timer for three minutes. Once the timer went off, he held up his wooden stirring stick and said “Stir the potion three times, clockwise, with your wooden stirrer. Wooden to signify nature, compared to glass or metal,” he explained, giving his own potion three clockwise stirs. OOC: 5 posts minimum for this bit, please. You have about 24 hours.
