She returned the professor's smile then turned her attention to the broom grasped in her hand.
OMG, A HOVER!
They were getting close! They'd be flying anytime now! Ariadne bounced from side to side for a few minutes before settling into place. She took two large steps backward then looked around to make sure she had enough room. She mounted her broom then got a decent grip on the handle. It was SUPER hard to relax when she was so excited, but Ariadne managed it anyway. AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
Ariadne gave an INNER scream of excitement then kicked off from the ground... Well, the Greingoth girl was quite excited if her perpetual motion was any indication. Tiara watched as she mentally prepared herself and made her best attempt at relaxation. The woman smiled in understanding. Her first time on a broom was not exactly the picture of relaxation. Quote:

Oh yes. She'll be up there. "Alright Charlie," that was her broom's name, see? "You ready?" She thought about her question for a moment and smiled to herself. "Of course you are, you were made for this. Just don't drop me okay?" Not that she thought he would, he was clearly the best broom in the shed. Haddie swung her leg over the broom in an over-excited mimic of how Professor Tanner showed them. "We got this?" she asked the broom, then nodded. "I think we do."
The broom and her were becoming fast friends, she could feel it. And with that, Haddie raised the handle of the broom and pushed off the ground as hard as she could. In an instant she was at least six or seven feet off the ground, her heart beating away in her chest so fast she was noticeably shaking. If it wasn't for the ear-to-ear grin on her face, one might think she was scared. "Whoa..." She patted Charlie's handle. "You're as eager as I am." See how well she and Charlie connected? Angling the handle down, gentle, Haddie brought the broom to just a few feet off the ground as instructed. See, she was listening. They were hovering!!! Quote:

This made Haddie grin even more. She and this broom were simpatico. "Chuck ol' boy, when I get my own broom, I hope it's just like you. But if we don't do as instructed we might have to sit out the rest of the lesson."
The broom reluctantly descended to the ground and in a second or two, Hadley's feet were back on the ground. Okay, that's plenty of ground time. After all, Professor Tanner did say to practice taking off and landing a few times. Haddie kicked off, angling the handle up, and was airborne again with ease. And back down for a landing. Up in the air again. And back down. Up again. "Wheeeeeee!" It was a pure and childlike squeal of fun as much as it was Haddie just being silly old Haddie. "I feel like I'm on one of those grocery store rocket rides." Put a quarter in and the little rocket ship goes up and down for a few minutes. She used to love those things. Hadley definitely had a healthy connection with her broom. She had even given it an affectionate name, apparently. And the bond showed when she shot up into the air like a rocket. " Oh well done, Miss Denaker!" she exclaimed with pride. She was about to urge her to bring it down in altitude a bit when the girl did it herself. Good good.
After another successful takeoff and landing, Tiara knew this girl was a natural. Perhaps she would make a fine Quidditch player someday? Quote:

Because her best friend was babbling more than usual since she was around Tenacious. Haddie reminded her of David. Whenever Rachel got close to him, he would stammer and get very nervous. Rachel reasoned she needed to rescue her friend, so she did exactly this. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ''Oh, thank you, Professor Tanner.'' Rachel smiled excitedly at her Professor the looked back at the Eagle beside her. Like her, Haddie had her broom leaping into her hand fairly quickly. "Excellently done, Haddie.'' Soon more instructions were coming their way and Rachel hastened to follow them. She took two great steps backwards.
Full of confidence, Rachel swung her right leg over her broom, holding onto it gently. She was quite determined to follow Tanner's instructions to the letter, you see. She never had a problem with take offs but sometimes her landings were a little bumpy but hopefully she had improved by now. The girl kicked off from the ground at the go ahead, lifting the broom's handle a tad. Look at her hovering beside Haddie! Rachel giggled at the excitement written across her friend's face. "Are you enjoying yourself?'' she called and now tilting her broom's handle down so that she was lowered close to the ground.
Oh, lovely! Her landing had indeed improved. She needed to see if she could keep this up so she began the process of hovering, hovering and landing again. Not to be outdone, Rachel was soon airborne beside her friend. Tiara applauded with the successful landing that actually looked quite smooth. The woman wasn't surprised when Rachel continued the process again. Quote:

Aint that what they're really for? "Sorry Professor…" he began "…. But this broom is being difficult-- it rolled away when I bade it to come up." His own broom is never stubborn. It knew how to follow instructions. Yeah yeah he should stop comparing.
But now they have to mount their brooms? With after what this thing did to his wrist, would he even risk putting this between his legs?? And then they were told not to squeeze it to death. "I wont squeeze you to death if you promise never to hit me again. Anywhere." Capisce broom? He has never been more serious in his short life.
Relax, lift handle, kick off, right right, he knew what to do. Its riding an unfamiliar broom that is a more pressing matter to him now. Even a muggle jockey needs time to feel his new steed. Or donkey, as the case may be.
Gingerly the curly top mounted his broom, still ready to leap off at a moment's notice in case this broom had a sick sense of humor. He held onto the shaft firmly, tilted it up like he would when he was on his own broom and kicked off from the ground.
…. And it hovered. It hovered 2 inches from the ground.
Wow much impressed school broom. Not.
He didn’t even bother tilting the shaft back down because if he did it would just dig into the soil. He simply stood again, the broom still hovering around his ankles. He swung his leg to rest it across the other one and sat somewhat side saddled on his broom, slumping his face annoyingly on his hand as he grumbled. "Yeah real funny Broomhilda, just tell me when you're done with the lame jokes and ready for some real flying."
And all of a sudden, the broom lurched back, throwing him off, then hovered a good 5 feet off the ground. He rolled onto his elbows and just glared. Oh it was just waiting for him to do that innit? Glare glare glare glare glare. " Oh it is the broom you should apologize to, Mister Salander, not myself." She didn't think he was grasping the importance here.
And after what she witnessed a few moments later, she knew he wasn't getting it. She could plainly see that he wasn't injured, so she wasn't that worried about it. " Mister Salander, I would try a less insulting-sounding name than Broomhilda for starters. Treat it like you would treat someone you want to impress: be nice to it, compliment it, show confidence in it." He needed an attitude adjustment if he was going to make this relationship work. Yes, she had been a bit TOO confident. This wasn't charms, this was flying class! And her broom at home was used to her really. She didn't have to tell it to get up, it just did! "Okay, I'll be more gentle next time. "
She did as she was instructed and took two careful steps backwards to give herself some room before she swung her leg over her broke and took a breath as she looked down at it. "All right broom, it's just you and me! I won't yell at you again if you don't hit me in the face okay? I've already broke my nose 6 times this year, I don't want to go for a seventh." She gently petted her broom and then whispered to it.. " Especially in front of Jace. "
She then raised her head up, held her broom firmly but not tightly cause.. She had done this before a lot! She then kicked up off the ground, raised her broom handle and...
In the airrrrrrrrr!!!!
A smile came over Azura's face as she hovered there! She loved the familiar feel of being off the ground, the wind in her hair, biting coldly against her face! She didn't have any problems here.. It was just her and the broom!
A soft laugh escaped her throat for a moment before she gently angled the broom back down and landed! Tiara was gratified to see Azura take her advice to heart. " Now THAT," she said, watching the girl touch down, " is more like it. Well done, Miss Kennedy," she finished with a smile.
This was going quite well, actually. It seemed like every year there was at least one student that was completely paralyzed by fear, but that didn't seem to be the case this time around. " Okay, back to terra firma for a bit, everyone!" Yes, sorry, some things were better accomplished on the ground. Like listening to instructions.
Once they were gathered, she began once more. " Time for steering instructions. It works just the way you would intuitively expect. If you want to turn left, guide the handle left with your hands and lean into the turn. For right turns, just change the direction." Easy enough.
" Perhaps even more important is how to brake." Especially for beginners! " To slow down, pull up on the handle. Also, sit up and lean back at the same time." Again, not that difficult.
" So rather than have you practice it several times right here in the circle," which could be boooooring, "[B]we will be practicing on an obstacle course of sorts. She pointed towards the other side of the pitch with her wand. Giant padded poles and hoops sprung up out of the ground, three sets of them in a line. " They have pads and cushioning charms, so if you hit them it should be alright!"
" The set on the left is the easiest, on the right the hardest. You know your level, go where you will be challenged but not impossibly so." Her pointing indicated the leftmost set, made up completely of poles. " The easy set remains stationary, but gets closer together the further through the slalom you get." She shifted her gaze slightly. " The middle set is similar to the easy set, but some of the poles move side to side. In addition, there are a few large hoops sprinkled in there for you to fly through that will move up and down." Which left... " The last set's poles move much faster; the hoops move they same speed, but they are much smaller." In other words, there was something for everyone.
" Try as many or as few of the courses that you'd like. So have at it! This is what will occupy the rest of the lesson - have fun!" OOC: Feel free to finish up your takeoff/landing posts if you still need to. The obstacle course makes up the last big chunk of the lesson and will remain open for a couple of days. Tiara will be flying around supervising, so not too much funny business! ;-)
