FOUR (4): You inherit a belief that hard work is the right way to work, a sense of cautiousness, thoroughness, and self-discipline.
Hmm. So according to this, the Greingoth were hard workers and really went after what they wanted. Sounded about right. Tiara began to circulate the room. First up was a first year. After a quick glance through the girl's work, the professor gave her a thumbs up and a smile. Quote:

She knew what those were, but she just sat there and listened to what her peers had to say about the number as she jotted a few notes down for interesting things said that she didn't know.
Flipping to Chapter Two in her textbook, the Head Girl looked over the familiar Pythagorean Number chart. Though at this point she could probably work out what numbers to assign to what letters if she had to, but when a chart was readily available, why shouldn't she take advantage of it? Besides, Sam might need it.
Carefully writing her surname in her notes, she followed the line underneath it with its appropriate numbers:
M-A-N-C-I-N-I
4-1-5-3-9-5-9
4+1+5+3+9+5+9 = 36 = 3+6 =9
Interesting. She had the same Family Name Number as the Professor. But it also kind of made sense, given their Ravenclaw nature. "You alright with these numbers, Sam?" Tia asked, turning to look at the younger Eagle. As she approached the Head Girl, Tiara was about to make a comment. But then Tia got involved with a young Ravenclaw and Tiara stepped back with an approving nod. Quote:

And they actually have to crunch numbers. That’s always come easy to his dad, but since this curly top didn’t have to do much arithmetic in his life thus far he doesn’t really know how good he can be. Except that he still counts with his fingers. Always.
So was that how they did the Family number thing? It looked.... Simple enough? Yeah he can do that. So grab the book and do that maths. Here we go: S A L A N D E R 1+1+3+1+5+4+5+9 = 29 2+9 = 11 1+1 = 2
So he got a 2? He turned to his textbook and read up what it means:
Wow... This says that he is very peaceful and loving. Hmmm..... Well he liked peace but he sure didn’t shy away from the action. He likes to collect things though that much was true. But yeah... Kinda not him? But wait he was a Salander. DOES THAT MEAN HE"S NOT A SALANDER???
Cue internal panic.
But as he glanced down the page he spotted an 11. Wait HE had an 11 too. Did that count or?....
He kept reading anyway:
Now THAT sounds more like him. And his dad. Uplift, encourage and inspire others? Check check and check! He don’t know much about the spiritual living part (have they met his dad? Pfffft). But his blue-green eyes stayed on the last part of the paragraph: You will learn from life through many tests that illuminate certain universal truths.
Huh. The Sorting Hat said the same thing to him.
Spooky. Cue X-Files theme. Oh, had he spotted the error or not? " Remember not to reduce your 11, as it is a Master Number!" she reminded him. " And that fits you better, I would suspect," she finished. Quote:

Alright. Here it goes. She scribbled her name on her paper and started the calculation.
She then checked the textbook.
... lovely. According to this, her hard work and talent pretty much translated to she inherited an ego. Yes, that was one of the less wonderful family name numbers. " Remember, these are just traits you are exposed to from your family. It does not have to mean you are locked into that for life, dear." The look on the girl's face had been less than happy. She chose not to point out that 44 is one of the minor Master Numbers and therefore the connection is of more significance. Quote:

Turning to a new page in her notebook, she began to work it out:
She looked to see what the meaning of her number meant:
Well... this was rather accurate, though Esme wondered if she was really THAT stubborn. She'd have to ask Juno about it later. " Well done, Miss Darcy," commented the instructor. Quote:

She was even more excited to find out all about her family name. Rachel quickly pulled her textbook towards her and opened it to the appropriate page then began to work:
Rachel read the meaning of her Family Name Number repeatedly, hardly daring to believe how accurate it was. Hadn't she tried to help Haddie and David be friends so that they could put their problems behind them? Importantly also, she was sensitive. She could say the same for her a lot of her family members especially her daddy. Hmm. From what Tiara knew of little Rachel Watson, this suited her quite well. She apparently fit the mold of her family traits quite well. Quote:

So according to Chapter Twenty-seven, he had a conservative attitude and a stubborn streak. That sounded true! Next up was a first year Hufflepuff to check in on. " Hmm.." she mused while looking over his work. " Whenever you reach 11, 22, or 33 in a calculation, you should halt immediately as you have arrived at a Master Number." This was a very new concept for the first year, so she pointed with her finger at the interpretation. " You inherit an ability to teach others in a masterful way. Your family name brings a keen sense of responsibility, love for your fellow human, and a desire to serve. You will learn, just as your family has learned, to overcome the many setbacks life will put in your path," she read off. " How does that compare?" Quote:

She could see a lot of that being true. She turned to Hope to see if Hope thought the same, since they were both cousins. What did Miss Summers have for her today? " Ah, you have good traits from your family, Miss Summers." Anyone could agree with that, probably. Quote:

She still refused to shake hands with kids her own age. They were kids. Leave the handshaking to the adults. "Haddie."
Before she could say anymore class began, and... oh, she must have annoyed Professor Tanner more than she thought, as the Professor didn't even acknowledge her questions about different cultures naming practices. Oh well. Haddie gave Sabbath a sheepish little shrug, more amused than anything and took out her quill, parchment and book.
D+E+N+A+K+E+R
4+5+5+1+2+5+9=31
3+1=4
Haddie just blinked at the textbook for a moment. "Yeah, nope. Not me at all." Figures. As always, math was a waste of time. "How is yours?" She asked Sabbath. "Accurate or no?" Quote:

The rest of it doesn't even fit them." She paused for a moment, in thought. "It does fit my cousin, I guess. She's a Denaker too, but I think that's because she takes more after her mom's side of the family." Now if she'd have gotten a one, or even a five. Hell, even a three would have fit her. But a four. Pfffft. "Prof. Tanner. What does it mean if I completely don't match my number at all? Can I like trade it in for a better number?" She overheard Haddie saying that her family name number did not describe her. " And why do you think that could be, Miss Denaker?" Tiara inquired.
" No, you cannot trade it in for a different number," she stated. " But if you ever change your name for some reason, which most commonly occurs from marriage, you would take on those traits as well. Those may fit you better." OOC: Sorry I missed your post! Quote:

Fresh parchment in front of him, he started his calculations.
... and it was SO true. And while that was his name now, and it had been for some time, he still felt the need to revisit his past, and to consider what might have been if his parents were more... well... married.
He couldn't help but snort. LOUDLY. HA! That was Gavin, for sure, and while he hadn't taken on the Isaacs name, he could see how his dads traits were influencing his life too.
This was too perfect. Now here was a good example of someone with multiple family influences. " Mister Browne, what do you think of your various influences?" Quote:

Any attempts at cuddling and that would be it though. It wasn’t that cold, especially by the fire.
As they’d been released to actually figure out their family numbers, she’d begrudgingly pulled her journal closer. She still didn’t believe that any of it would make any sort of sense to her, but at least it wasn’t too hard when it came to the math. Simple numbers, really.
As she looked that up, she only became that much more decided that Arithmancy made no sense at all. Maybe that description worked for some people. Like her sister. But not her at all.
Maybe her math was wrong. And how was...? " Yes, good work, Miss Andrews." She got an approving nod from the professor. Quote:

Melbourne just grinned at the number before leaning over toward her friend and whispering. "This says I'm stubborn and have strong opinions." She grinned maybe this thing was actually kind of accurate? "Maybe your actually a Johanson Haddie?" Mel asked as she peered over at her friends number. Hers fit both of them obviously. Tiara chuckled at Melbourne's words. She had known other members of Melbourne's family, and that number fit them well. Plus it looked like the girl was going above and beyond to do calculations for her other names! " I am glad you find this topic interesting, my dear." Quote:

...oh? Jace blinked...read, and re-read the meaning behind his family name not quite believing it. He hated change. Routine is perfectly fine. From the get go, he had a hard time coping with boarding school, and being so far away from his family. However, he can safely say that he is innately curious...but not really a risk taker.
Huh. Maybe the description is true for his dad though.
Hand up. "Professor? What about hyphenated surnames? How do you go about that? Does it have a special rule?" he asked, his hand outstretched high above his head. Oh, a good question! " There is no special rule, you would simply ignore the hyphen and treat is a one long surname." Very long. She wasn't sure where he had come up with that question, but she was glad he was curious enough to ask. Quote:

And then, when she responded to his introduction with a high-five instead of a handshake he already knew he was going to get along with her.
As class started, he flashed his dimpled smile and replied, "its nice to meet you too, Haddie" before jotting his note and sending the crumpled ball sailing through the air to Noelle.
Oh, man!! Sabbath's eyes sought the heavens, why hadn't he checked if the professor was watching before he'd thrown it, that wasn't like him at all. He determined that it must of been the distraction of the things he needed to discuss with Noelle that made him careless. "Yes, Professor" Sabbath replied dully, slumping in his chair and flipping his notebook open again with a huff. He'd go and see her in her office after class.
After his admonishment from the teacher, Sabbath resigned himself to completing the set exercise, rifling through the pages of his textbook with Haddie working quietly beside him. She finished moments before him and queried him on his findings.
He agreed with Haddie's analysis of her own family number whole-heartedly, his didn't fit him either "It's all piffle, it doesn't match me at all . He was definitely not a stickler for facts and theories. Although... He thought to himself, his family's traits were a closer match. His family were top of their field in the world of flamenco arts because of their dedication, and perfectionism. And, culturally, their Gypsy heritage and family lore made them intensely private about their lives outside of the limelight. "It fits my family more or less, though" he added, with a shrug. She walked by the pair as Sabbath was sharing with Haddie. She tried to have a positive, encouraging tone, not wanting him to think she was angry with him over the note-throwing incident. " I believe you are both having a similar situation? Remember, you are still young and discovering who you are. The family name number describes traits you are exposed to, not your personality. You may find that the older you get, the more you see the product of this influence." Food for thought. Quote:

During her note taking she lifted her head at a voice and smiled lightly seeing it was Sabbath. "Pretty good, thanks. Glad to see you're back," she whispered in reply to him. She hadn't had much of a chance to see or speak with him since his return and made note to do so as soon as she could.
There really wasn't anymore time for talk sadly as the way to calculate ones Family Name number was explained. Well alright then. It was time to get one with this and figure out just what her name meant. Hady flipped open her textbook to the proper page and began quietly listing down the numbers that matched the letters of her name.
Hady choose to look up both last names. Her biological one which she used and never officially changed as well as her fathers being as he had adopted her years ago. Staring down at the traits to these Family Name numbers she wanted to laugh. Really the whole money and ego thing from number eight wasn't her but the number four was. Oddlyly enough the brunette wasn't sure just how she felt about this. Another student who chose to look at multiple surnames. " How do you feel these numbers affect you, Miss Lynch?" she queried, curious as to the girl's thoughts. Quote:

After she had completed her calculations, she turned back to her book and found the number meanings.
Janelle looked at her results and pondered the information. She supposed that was true of her family. Yes it was true,.......but that only explained a part of who they were. As she read on, Janelle discovered that some of the other meanings could apply to her family as well. She wondered if combining the Family Name Number with another Arithmancy number could give more insight into a family or an individual family member. " Yes, good work, Miss Guidry," she said. Not wanting to interrupt the girl's train of thought, she moved on quickly. Janelle was one that liked to ponder her interpretations. Quote:

The Hufflepuff took out his pen and started with writing out his surname on the sheet, and then added the corresponding numbers below it. And then totalled them. And reduced. And checked the text for the meaning - he really should memorize these things.
And reading that, Brian almost snorted. He could possibly maybe see the artistic flair bit. His entire family was full of artists. His father was a musician and his mother a painter. Philantrophy and generosity were more from his mother than his father, though, and it was just a little ridiculous to say that he would inherit a concern for others from a man he hadn't seen in two years.
He could hardly even remember his face. " From the look on your face, I would guess you are struggling to synthesize this result with what you observe daily, Mister Woods." Or was she reading him incorrectly? Quote:

She opened her textbook to the instructed page and paused to shoot a grin at the younger girl before beginning her calculations. Alright. That was good, right? RIGHT. "Need any help?" Y'know...not with the maths probably because she wasn't very good at that. But she knew how to open the textbook, if that could be of any help. Man. He went to work adding up his last name, thankfully short. He scribbled his addition out on the paper out of habit, humming to himself.
He looked at the number for a rather long time before looking around the classroom. How many other people had gotten the same one? Would they be similar to him, or would their families be similar to his? He wrinkled his nose and flipped through the pages in his book until he found the right chapter for the meanings, scribbling that underneath what was already on his page.
Hmmmmm. Did... that apply? To his Herbologist dad who did experiments and stuff, maybe, but to Jaemin? The small boy wasn't sure. Did he really count as forceful, or strong-willed? Sure, he was willful, but... he was eleven. It was hard not to be willful at eleven. He looked around the classroom at the other students again. It was hard for the younger students, who especially were still trying to find themselves. " Good work, Mister Song. I'll be interested to see how you do or do not grow into this." Quote:

Huh...really? Was this what Elliot was really like? I mean these qualities did sound rather Slytherin in nature, which he was, but...his father had been a Ravenclaw. His sister too. And inflated ego? Elliot didn't think he was that great...but now that he thought about it...his older brother was a bit of boastful git. He was going to take that "possible inflated ego" to mean it was just his dumb big brother. " Oh well done, Mister Choi!" she exclaimed.
