A POTTED HISTORY
Sam had a tough start to life, apparently abandoned as a baby on the streets of magical London. She grew up homeless around of Diagon and Knockturn Alley, making her home in the rooftops and learning to fend for herself, usually disguised as a boy. As a result, she's a skilled climber and pickpocket, although she operated under the grifters' code and won't steal from an honest man. She wasn't entirely alone, being raised by her Pa, Connor Tyler, a dealer in whatever goods he could get his hands on, although was used to people seeing right past her and her tatty clothes.
Despite his many failings as a businessman, Conner was determined that Sam would go to better herself at Hogwarts, and surprised her the summer before first year when he produced the funds to go get her wand, books, equipment and robes. That same summer, she met Dora whilst the Gryffindor was waiting for her Dad who was shopping in Knockturn Alley. Little did she know that impact would have on the rest of her life.
Going to Hogwarts was like a dream come true; for the first time Sam had a proper hot meal, and slept on a proper bed. The sorting to Ravenclaw was a surprise, as she'd never been properly taught to read or write. However, with the patient help and support of Dora, and the Ravenclaw HoH/librarian Mr Kitredge, by the end of the year Sam had conquered this challenge and caught up with her peers. Her summer was spent back on Diagon Alley with her Pa, but it wasn't the same having experienced the wonder of Hogwarts. However, she did start to sort out her Pa's books.
