Lex had been staring at the Slytherin table (well, more accurately, the window just behind the Slytherin table), taking a few seconds to realize someone had been looking at him.
"Sorry, hello," he said in a distracted, but friendly tone. He held out his hand in greeting. "I'm Lex. Lex Montague. Are you also a first-year?"
