Were it not for the fact that he had almost as much trouble understanding most characters' actions and motivations as he did understanding people in the real world, he might have considered books the perfect escape. As it was, they were still an escape, however imperfect.

Of course, that only applied when he could read them uninterrupted, and that was near impossible when one lived (and travelled) with hundreds of intrusive children.

The sound of the compartment door sliding open broke Daxton out of his concentration at once, as alert as he was for it. His head snapped up and he eyed the person who had entered his compartment, that blank expression fixed on his features. He expected her to leave again, at first, though there was no real evidence to back up such an expectation. Instead, she sat, and Daxton watched her, blinking every couple of seconds.

What... exactly... did she think she was doing? In his compartment?

Daxton did not ask this out loud. He did not say anything at all (perhaps predictable), and he did not move at all. Instead, he sat incredibly still, looking the girl up and down, gaze lingering on her hair, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly the longer he looked. What did she want? What had she come in here for? What were her motives?

He did not trust her. And so he kept his eyes fixed firmly on her.
Making sure she wasn't visible from anyone looking into the compartment from the corridor, Maggie relaxed a little bit. This was ridiculous. She, Magdalena Natalie Traulton, was HIDING. Like, she'd dressed up for this train ride after all. And now the only person who would see her like this was.....that guy. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

Maggie could feel his eyes on her but chose to ignore him for a few seconds longer, trying to calm herself down. It was fine. Everything was fine. She hadn't just ruined everything. Nope. She just needed some space that was it. Things would be back to normal at the feast. Being away from them now was already making her feel better. Him, really. She didn't feel that bad about what she'd said to Paige. Right now she was mostly upset about upsetting Zeke.

Meh.

Eventually she looked back at the boy's face, just staring back at him for a full second. "I'm hiding." Maggie justified her coming into his compartment. Yes that. She didn't even mind that she'd just shared that because seriously, that guy didn't talk to anyone so who would he tell? Did he even have any friends?
