Seeing that the pensive was clear for the moment, Sabel walked over to where she had set her bag down and picked it right back up again. Then he was at her side, putting bag back in her hands. His voice was kept low, so not to cause a scene, but there was no question or room for arguing. "Brown. You are dismissed from class."
He wouldn't say baring no penalty, he wouldn't say why or why not, he wouldn't let her argue. If anyone overheard, it would be as if he was punishing her for taking a mirror call during his class. No other reason. He watched her closely. "You may take Adair with you if you like." This last bit, however, was said in a purely confidential volume. Quote:

She never skipped class. She loved DADA and Professor Dakest's lessons. The only time he could recall her running out like that was during the patronus lesson last term and that was because she was really REALLY hurt. So of course he was nervous. His gaze hadn't left the door.
And clearly that didn't go unnoticed. Because he was being called out for it. "Er, I was actually gonna partner with Soph so she didn't come back without one," that sounded logical, right? The longer she was gone for, the more worried Zander grew. What was taking so long? Why was her mother calling her in the middle of a lesson??? Zander had met the woman before and Mrs. Brown was a very intelligent person... This definitely wasn't on accident.
That's it. He was leaving. He was gonna go after her.
But before he could do just that, the Head Girl was making her way back in? And... Zander didn't have a trained eye, but he did know something was wrong. Almost immediately. The same enthusiasm that she had every DADA lesson was missing. She was holding her gaze to the ground. Her face was paler than usual. Something was wrong. "We don't have to--" Um. Seeing Dakest walk up behind him, the Gryffindor quickly let his sentence trail off. Heh. Hi Professor. Definitely not gonna tell Sophie Brown that maybe they could just skip the activity all together. NOPE. He was being a model student. YUP. Not doing anything fishy of any-- What?
Dakest could tell too.
Zander had probably never appreciated the guy more. And here he was thinking that Sabel Dakest was just another old grumpy, Professor. The man was kind of brilliant... And Zander finally saw that. He only looked over at Dakest, giving the man a very thankful, humble nod at the last sentiment before turning back to Sophie.
It was her move. Was she going to listen? He wasn't sure. But he was sticking with her. That he was sure of. Something wasn't right. Sophie wasn't going to back down no matter how concerned Zander looked, and as he started to protest her urging them to start the activity, he was trailing off, and Soph turned to see why.
...Ugh.
Darn Auror.
Soph knew right away that his statement wasn't a punishment. He wasn't mad that she'd left class and come back - she'd done that before, and he'd never questioned her then - even though this time she'd disrupted class, but she knew well enough that he was seeing right through her stone cold facade and was putting her out of her misery.
Misery, or... whatever this chilling numbness was.
Taking her bag back from him, she slung it over her shoulder wordlessly, then took Zander's hand in hers and started walking back toward the door with him... then promptly stopped and looked back at Dakest, the memory resurfacing of the hug they'd shared when the professor got his bad news at the end of the summer. A hug that she hoped made him feel less numb, less broken by whatever the news was that he had received - and, for a moment, emotions threatened to creep in and cause her to initiate one of those from him in a role reversal this time, but she had her wits enough about her to know where they were. In class. He had a job to do. And she wasn't sure she wanted to feel less numb, or to feel things at all.
Numb was good. Numb was safe. Numb was keeping her together.
She couldn't find her voice, though, to thank him for understanding or say anything at all. Without any more from Sophie Brown besides an empty look directed the professor's way, she was gone, taking Zander Adair with her.
