Hogwarts RPG Name: Amur Neverwinter Fourth Year | ~ Rise and Rise Again, Until Lambs become Lions ~
So, mingling was happening. More or less. The less part being that Sabel couldn't help but feel that some students had missed the point of the instructions. The more being that it seemed to rub some nerves the wrong way. A heavy breath left him, and he drowned his bit of irritation in a good swig of coffee, before reassessing the situation. SPOILER!!: Daxton Quote:
Originally Posted by Felixir Daxton was there, had slipped in at some point, and was now sat on the grass (which he had regarded with the same apprehension as he had the grass outside of Dakest's office - outside did not belong inside), sans any of the snacks or drinks (obviously). What he did have, however, were his shoes and socks. On his feet, where they would likely remain until he walked back out the door after the meeting. There really was no getting around the rule this time, and he was not one to break a rule purely for the sake of it - unless there was a loophole, which was technically not even breaking it. It just caused hassle, and, generally speaking, hassle was not what one wished for when they intended to keep a low profile.
Not that Daxton had really succeeded in keeping a low profile, not all the time anyway, but he still wanted to try, despite an innate tendency to stick out, thanks to being as strange as he was.
Ever since he had taken his seat, in an isolated, solitary space of floor/grass where nobody would bother him, Daxton had been picking away at the grass, not really knowing why, only that he felt compelled to do it. He continued, building up a neat little pile of shredded grass as Dakest went on about... more grass, grass growing, in a statement which made absolutely zero sense to the Ravenclaw.
Perhaps predictably, the task Dakest set them was not one that Daxton could complete; having not participated in a duel, having not had permission to compete in any duels, and having not had the (official) magical ability to partake in any case, he did not have a partner. He shredded the grass with slightly more vehemence then, and found it to be quite soothing, but after a few long moments Daxton suddenly stopped and looked around at those in the room. He considered everyone, the banners, Dakest, the grass, then flipped open the notebook he had brought along (the snapping one, an inexplicable gift from Char) and began fervently writing in it with his pen (also a gift from Char, just as inexplicable as the notebook). He did not move from his position, did not make eye contact with anyone, but occasionally Daxton glanced around at those gathered for the meeting as he wrote, surreptitiously listening in where he could, all the while keeping his notebook shielded so that nobody could peek at its contents if they felt so inclined. The words he wrote were not for the sake of communication this time, but something else entirely. Everyone else could just carry on as they were; Daxton was content to sit alone with his notebook, as he invariably was.
Actually, this worked out well. There would have been zero chances that Daxton would afford anyone a handshake. Or have a conversation with anyone. Or indeed take part in what he deemed a pointless interaction with anyone at all. And yet, he still seemed to find some value in being here for this, if the scribbling in his notebook was anything to go by.
Sabel's attention once again snagged on Prince, who seemed to be doing a sort of lawn-mowing with his fingers. Couldn't really blame the kid, given the activity didn't really involve those who hadn't participated in the duel. It turned a cog in Sabel's brain as he took another sip of coffee.
At least the kid was finding something productive to do in the intern? SPOILER!!: Maggie & Zeke & Hady Quote:

Maggie just smirked right back at him, bowing her head slightly in greeting. "I've never felt better." Well, that was a lie but it sounded really cool in her head. And seeing as everyone seemed to not be too happy about something it was of course her job to BE happy.
Like. The duel had been awesome, no?
When Zeke joined her she took his hand in hers. Before she was able to say anything, however, the meeting had started and Professor Dakest was talking...and more talking...and she wasn't entirely sure just WHAT he was saying. Maggie was too busy looking happy to pay attention to everything.
Oh. Handshakes? So, Hady. Okay. Maggie made sure to catch Hady's eye FIRST before turning to Zeke again. "I'll be right back." She said quietly. And then she kissed him right then and there. Ahem. Professor Dakest wouldn't mind right? Like, it wasn't THAT long or anything.
Afterwards she quickly made her way over to where Hady was. "Hiii." They'd of course already interacted and stuff after the duel so this whole gesture thing was a bit over the top in her opinion. Nonetheless, Maggie offered the other girl her hand. "It really WAS a great duel." See? No resentment or anything. Nope. Quote:

Averting hi gaze back to the Professor of the moment, Zeke retuned Sabel's nod, but remained silent. It was Maggie's hand in his that received the most amount of recognition, and in spite of everything, he was glad she was okay... that mattered. He squeezed her hand a little as their 'lecture' of sorts, was underway.
The whole 'grass is greener' thing... went over his head. He couldn't think of this in that way right now, there was still a lot to process. But when they were instructed to find their partner and shake hands, he inhaled a breath and stood a little straighter. He had to. "Oka----," he'd been about to say, before Maggie's lips met his. No complaints here. Just a kiss back before she scooted off the find Hady.
.....
He glanced quickly at Sabel, because sorry not sorry, and the grin he was now wearing said as much. HE COULDN'T HELP IT, OKAY?!
...
But it was Kyroh he was supposed to show respect for, so looking one way and the next, Zeke tried to find the fifth year Ravenclaw. Quote:

Everything that was being said about the grass being greener on the other side and the grass growing taller she actually UNDERSTOOD. The words could mean nearly anything the person hearing them wanted them to mean. What now? She had to go over to Maggie and shake hands or something like that....well alright it was fine they had already done this.
Hady set her coffee down beside her bag and rose to her feet letting her eyes meet Maggie. She walked the few feet to the other girl meeting her half way taking the hand that was stretched out before her. "Hey," she greeted quietly with a firm nod of her head. No doubt about it that their duel had been great but they were supposed to talk about what went good or bad. There was only one thing she could think right then. Focus. She had lost hers and in that brief second that her focus had been on something else it caused injury to her partner. "On my part I know I lost focus for a few seconds. A few seconds much to long honestly but you were a great partner all the way through." Serious compliment there. The blonde was tough and she proved it out there during their duel never backing down. They were snakes and it's how they worked.
He had to shake his head a little bit at Maggie. Of course, shake with a grin. At least the girl had a chipper attitude about things. Almost more than enough. Especially with that PDA, with Mr. Browne. Well then.
Zeke got the arched eyebrow out of the two, when his well understood grin came Sabel's way. Dear Merlin. These kids grew up fast. At least, it was a quick gesture, and not too lingering. Though the place and timing of it had a right to be questioned.
At least Lynch had the decency to be relatively productive with the comments she provided. SPOILER!!: Yoongi Quote:

Seriously, he still did not know what that meant.
It was perhaps weird for Yoongi to be quiet but he was. He kept thinking about all of this. Before the first meeting he was super excited and thought it would be fun. But now that they had done the challenge and their first duel, he had his doubts. It hit him that they werent doing this for fun. They were actually getting trained to protect themselves and attack others. It was the last part he had troubles with. He didnt want to hurt his fellow students and he wondered how the Professor had to live with the thought that he and his Auror team had to attack someone in order to protect.
Shaking his head, the Gryffindor sighed loudly as he began to look around for his opponent. A quick glance around and he realised that she wasn't there yet. Now he thought about it, he hadn't seen her in the previous meeting either. Perhaps she hadn't signed up for the meetings as that had been a choice. Making a mental note to find the Ravenclaw later if she didn't show up, Yoongi began to tear the grass out of the ground absentmindly.
Speaking of productivity, it seemed he had another grass mower on his hands. It was strange seeing Hyland so down and glum. And nothing about the boy's personal appearance seemed to be muffed. So, what then was eating at him?
Sabel cast a small frown in the kid's direction before deciding it was best not to call attention to it. SPOILER!!: Adi Quote:
Originally Posted by FearlessLeader19 "It's not nice to answer a question with a question, Professor,'' Adi told the man cheerfully. But hmmm. How to answer his own question? With honesty, of course! "I know there's room for improvement on both my and Cutty's part but I really did enjoy the duel. Thanks for giving us the opportunity!'' Did Dakest realise that he had helped make his final year even more awesome?
....................
The Hufflepuff sat there, happily munching away on his cookies and sipping on the hot chocolate. He smiled brightly when he saw Benny. His teeth might have been caked with bits of cookie haha Who cared? Not Benny, he was sure. "Hiya! Cookies, fat boy?'' Ehehe. Their little joke there. And yes. Adi was sharing those cookies.
...................
As Dakest started addressing them, he turned his attention to the man. All this talk about grass... was that the reason they were sitting on it? Heh. Excuse his thinking. The sugar combination must be messing with his head. Ah, man! They had to move? Adi wanted to sit right here, though. Wait... he scanned the grassy place. Cutty wasn't there as yet so that meant he was partnerless. For now at least until the Slytherin showed up. So sitting with Benny it was, while they waited on their partners since Polly wasn't there either.
Instead, he would address Rehman's choice of response. With a rather arched eyebrow and disapproving frown. "Who told you I was nice?" The lies. He'd have to stamp them out sooner or later.
Still, he couldn't stay reproachful for long, and he let his gaze soften just a little bit. Enough to give an acknowledging nod back to the kid on this thanks. SPOILER!!: Rooney, Blaise, Charolette @_@ Quote:
Originally Posted by Shanners Roo was too busy inspecting the grass to notice that David had walked in and only recognised that he was near him when he stood up straight at the entrance of Miss Charlotte. In fact, he gave the other boy a nod in greeting and a smile for pure nice nice around Miss Charlotte Hannah Kettleburn. Because she was friends with David and David was the son of Big Red, and Big Red probably knew important people, which meant that by five hundred degrees of separation, Rooney knew important people. To get to where he wanted in the world, he needed to KNOW important people and mingle with them. So David needed to be on his side and start throwing dinner parties with all the important people his parents knew. Just. Saying. He managed a smile, nothing too eager, when Miss Charlotte mentioned their plan to find her an arch enemy. "That's true. I'm still looking."
He WAS considering Olly, though. Turn her against her boyfriend. "The grass isn't wet," he pointed out, helpfully before shuffling his feet and sipping his water some more. At that point, his attention moved towards the Professor there and he rocked back and forth on his feet as he observed the banners. The bloody banners. But what was this all about grass? Rooney didn't understand it and he wasn't sure how he was supposed to. He knew that there was a saying about the grass being greener on the other side but what was this about grass growing long quickly? Was that something about how bad some of them had been? He was confused and he didn't like it. The second year looked around for his duelling partner, who was not currently here and shoved his hands in his pockets. "Colt???" Hey, he didn't like the kid, so he wasn't too upset about him not being here right now.
And shaking hands was n--"Hey!" Rooney gave Blaise's hand a push away from Miss Charlotte and frowned. "SHE has a BOYFRIEND." A boyfriend that wasn't here. Yeah, Olly. YEAH. Rooney was here and HE wasn't a boyfriend, but that didn't mean that this kid -- the one that Miss Charlotte had pretty much KILLED in their duel (PS. Ur so amazing, Miss Char OMG) -- could hold her hand because her boyfriend wasn't in the area.
He liked it better when the kid was unconscious. Quote:

Because they had got apple juice together and she was Charlotte Kettleburn (and even Prince Daxton didn't hate her) and also he totally had sent her that valentines riiiight? She was SURE it was him because it had said that she could beat him in a duel any time aaaaaaaaand he was the only one she had beat (SO FAR!!!).
She went to shake his hand and then her eyes went SUPER BIG AND WIDE BECAUSE WHA?
Hurrheehh ur.... ?
Hellloooooo Rooooooney. "He knows about my boyfriend, Roo." She explained helpfully. Even if Blaise HAD sent her a valentine. Which was just nice of him, really.
............. OH NO! She suddenly remembered that she'd been so focused on the valentines SHE got that she hadn't sent any herself! She had a TON of them in her drawer just sitting there!
OH NO SOME PEOPLE WOULD THINK THAT NOBODY CARED ABOUT THEM! SHE WAS SUCH A BAD FRIEND! Quote:

What did it matter that she had a boyfriend? "So what?" He asked, brows crinkling as he withdrew his hand. It was all the same to him. He didn't wanna have to shake her hand and pretend to be happy she beat him and he was the laughing stock of anyone who watched. Fine. Just fine. Blaise didn't know about her boyfriend, he didn't think he needed to. "You gonna tell the Professor I can't sit next to her either on account of her having a boyfriend?" 'CauseProfessor Dakest said they had to sit with their partners. The Gryffindor didn't mind sitting with his housemate, so long as they didn't talk about the duel.
That being said and because he didn't take orders from Ravenclaws, he reached forward, grabbed Char's hand and gave it a bit of firm shaking. THERE then because he could. "You have nice hands." More shaking. All the shaking. Shaking was fun. Quote:

Oh yeah. She'd never told him her boyfriends name, but he HAD seen them. He had seen them and so he KNEW. He didn't sound at all bitter, but he shrugged and returned his hands to his pockets because now he'd just told the kid that Miss Charlotte MURDERED the name of her boyfriend. This was...going to get interesting.
Mucho.
He bet that neither of them complimented her daffodil hair. That was something that he did. In secret. "...Would you go somewhere else if I did? I doubt it." Rooney bit the inside of his cheek to stop himself from talking more, because he was just looking like a problem child and he really didn't actually want to be here much longer. He just wanted to shake hands with Colt and try leave without anyone noticing. BUT THEN it all got a little bit too much and Roo bit harder on his cheek, watching closely and intensely at the hand touching and the shaking and -- nice hands. Rooney knew that. He had held her hand before at Christmas time, so he already knew. "She has nice hair, too." And to combat the fact he was going to blush in the next two seconds, he shrugged and pretended that he saw Colt. Which he didn't. At all. Maybe Colt was taking a sleep in his dorm. "My partner.. I should...go and.... y'know...bye." And now, the grass really was greener on the other side, because Rooney crossed over away from the pair and went back to rocking on his heels because he didn't hAVE A PARTNER RIGHT NOW. Quote:
Originally Posted by Tegz She was instantly distracted from her worry about unsent valentines cards because SHE WAS BEING COMPLIMENTED. Charlotte preeeeeened. Yes her hands were soft and nice and her hair was pretty and nice and they were SO RIGHT.
HOWEVER she was mystified at mention of Oliver? Olllllly Oliver? Did he know about her boyfriend? Is that what Roo meant? Because he did, because she'd told him yup.
And Roo was going (after only one compliment? Sad). Char smiled brightly and waaaved. He could go if he wanted, she didn't really understaaaand but... okay. "Okay!" She didn't SEE his partner anywhere but then again she wasn't REALLY looking either, and she already knew that Roo was way more good at noticing things than she was, so probably he had noticed his partner and Char hadn't.
She turned her attention to Blaise (who had sent her a valentine obviously). "You can say more nice things about me, if you like." She didn't mind. Especially because he knew she had a boyfriend. Really, she'd have to write to Wesley soon and tell him how NICE everyone was to her, all the boys! They gave her candy and compliments AND she beat them in duels!
Hogwarts was MARVELOUS!
And then.....there were the three musketeers. At first, Sabel didn't pay the group much mind. Charlotte was an energetic little thing, Blaise had a bit of spunk and well, Rooney he didn't yet know too well. What he did notice, was when the later took to slapping the middle-man's hand away. And all manner of non-duel related conversation sprung up.
And it didn't dwindle or die away either. It just kept getting watered by all sorts of nonsense. By the time Sabel was done his cup of coffee, his mind was made up. Thankfully, so was Rooney's. Walking away, even though he was the one that started it.
Letting out a breath, Sabel clapped his hands together and pushed himself to his feet. "Rooney, Blaise, Zeke, Maggie, Daxton. All of you, up front please."
And while he was waiting for them to get themselves organized, Sabel started towards the refreshment table, speaking to the rest of the class. "Ms. Lynch brought up a good point, that focus is a key factor of these duels. Not just focus on what you are doing, but why you are doing it. Who you are doing it against."
He paused, considering the assortment of things he had before turning and walking among the students. Every now and then, he would pause and ask for a mug that was still rather full. "It was apparent in two extremes this time around. Some of you were reluctant to cast on your fellow classmates, or be harsh in your spells on them. One of you went so far as to undo your own spells during the duel. This, is admirable in knowing your limits and not getting caught up in the moment."
Another pause, another cup. Thank you. "Others, knew the risk of leaving any opportunity of opposition to chance, and negated all possible retaliations. Commendable, in knowing where to brace your limits and how far one should and can go."
Two more cups? Yes please. "What we are going to work on today, is replacing that hesitation and over-thinking, and worrying, with the mindset of what needs to be done." Oh was that a half-finished cookie? Very tempting. "Of course, excercising due restraint and evaluation."
He moved back to the front. "Keep in mind that while today you are dueling friends and colleagues, tomorrow, or several years from now you may be dueling dark wizards, or friends who are no longer so. It's important to maintain an objective distance from your target, no matter how subjective a place they hold in your past, or in your heart."
Stopping up front with his volunteers, Sabel held up the mugs he had gathered. "Here is what we are going to do. Rooney and Blaise will pair up, as will Zeke and Maggie. Rooney, you will be protecting Blaise and Zeke, you Maggie. Daxton, I'll be protecting you. You will each also have one of these, atop your heads." And, without waiting for protests, Sabel moved to each student and placed mug atop heads with a bit of a sticking charm, also providing a cooling charm for those that still had hot liquid in them. The last mug, he put on his head, doing the same.
Then, he turned back to the rest of the students. "Now, your task is simple. You are to try to knock these mugs off each of our heads. If you manage to knock it off the head of the protected, Maggie, Blaise or Daxton first that pair is forfeit. If you knock both mugs off, that pair is forfeit. Forfeited pairs will join the class and attempt to remove the mugs from the remaining pairs. For those of you 'attacking', do so one at a time. You may throw off a maximum of three spells at a time to try and dislodge one, or two mugs, or knock down the pairs. Once you've tried attacking one pair, you may go try another. You must rotate through all pairs before attempting the first pair again."
Simple enough, right? "Maggie, Blaise, Daxton, you are allowed to assist your partner in so far as ducking and dodging the spells that come at you, but you must remain within five feet of your partner and you cannot cast to defend yourself or them. You may however, cast a maximum of one spell per attack, at the student who is opposing your pair. Attackers, keep in mind that you might get knocked off your feet if you aren't paying attention." "Zeke and Rooney. Your job, as is mine, is to defend yourself and your partner. You may cast up to a maximum of two spells per attack, to defend only. Consider how you might do this, and choose your spells and your tactics carefully."
He turned back to the rest of the class. "The point of this? Practice. Aim. Decisiveness. Resolution. Commitment. And judgment."
Did they all understand? Clear as mud? Good. "Begin!" ------------------------------------------
OOC: Alrighty, so this might be a bit confusing XD
Here's how it's gonna work. There are three pairs:
Zeke (protector) & Maggie (protected)
Rooney (protector) & Blaise (protected)
Sabel (Protector) & Daxton (protected)
The rest of the class are the 'Attackers'.
Each 'Attacker' picks a pair to attack. They may use up to three spells in their attack (this may be all in one post, or over several posts), but a total of three. The goal is to knock the mugs off the protected's head (will eliminate that pair) or both the protector & the protected's head (will eliminate that pair). Once you've made an attempt (successfully or unsuccessfully) on a pair, and once the defenders have had time to respond (i.e. you've completed your attack & defenders are not returning fire) then you can try another pair.
Defenders, your job is to keep the mugs on your heads. Protectors can cast up to 2 defending spells (total) to protect themselves/their partners. Protected's can cast 1 attack spell at the attacker, and can only physically move (while remaining in close proximity to the protector) to defend themselves.
The number of casts are PER attacker.
Please be realistic. Please let your opponents decide the outcome of the spells.
Once a pair has been forfeited, they disband and join the attackers.
We've got until November 30th for the club. I'll wind down the activity on the 29th, and we'll end on the 30th. So please enjoy until them
Also, if you are interested pairings for next duelings have been determined. I'll be working on getting the threads up, and duels will open on October 30th Please review the Q&A before STARTING your duel, as there will be some new information on there by October 30th
