Henric had expected her move before she even utter the spell from her mouth.So he had ample time to get away before her spell hit him. Without using his magic to cast the shield charm, he avoided it by somersaulting/rolling forward onto the floor. Obviously, he had perfected this move ever since his judo fighting days. Time to get even, Candice!

He pointed his wand towards her and cast the STINGING hex verbally!
