Not that Flamsteed probably had books like that...
Er. Right well, now there was a lot of kicking and scratching and yanking and Sweet Merlin, when the Fat Lady got to him, Zander Adair would be a dead man for this.
But also... HIS NONVERBAL WORKED????? He had been standing here for all of FIVE WEEKS trying to get a stupid nonverbal to do what it was supposed to do and all it took was a moment of panic? Er, could they make that happen during exams because Zander was in need of some sort of miracle here. Ahem. "Errr sorry about that," he scratched his head. Sorry about the chasing. Not about the letting go thing because that would be counterproductive. "But... I don't think the portraits appreciate that kind of scratching," merlin was this kid desperate to escape or WHAT? "Anyways, I hear you're in a pickle with some classes... And I just wanna help." Obviously the boy probably knew why Zander had been chasing him down like that, otherwise he probably wouldn't have been running away so quickly. Unless he had another reason to be avoiding the Seventh Year, DID HE? Did it look like he cared what the portrait liked? If she didn't want the harassment she should have swung open to let him leave. Clearly she liked the feeling of an 11 year old's shoes hammering incessantly at the back of her frame...at least until he got tired. Thing is...he was starting to realize that no matter how much he tried, the entrance wasn't budging and he was now cornered by one Zander Adair.
With a loud huff, the boy finally turned to face the Head Boy, forcing on his best dimpled smile. "A pickle? Nah, you must have me confused with someone else--is that why you were chasing me? Gosh I'm silly, I just thought you found out about the worms we put in Justin's pillowcase two nights ago. Kid's a squealer you know."
The smile spread into a wide grin as he took wide steps around the older boy, every step inching him closer to the staircase. "Boy am I glad we got that cleared up. You must have me confused for this other Firstie. We get mixed up all the time, it's cool." One more step...then another....no sudden movements or Zander might try giving chase again. "I appreciate your concern though. That was a neat trick you did with the entrance just now. I admire you so much. You must be the most powerful wizard in this entire school--I like your tie."
Hand on railing. Almost there....
