So, instead, he nodded his head. He understood. Really, he did. "I know. I do know." But that didn't seem like a good enough explanation, and he felt he owed her an explanation, given that was what they had agreed on in the first place. No titles, no commitments. Nothing.
Reaching up, he rubbed his neck and then pulled his hand forward through his hair, leaving it a right mess. "I know...and I'm sorry. It just....happened for me, Lex. I can't say I intended it. It just...kinda...grew." Did that make sense? He winced, remembering how that line of conversation went the first time. "I didn't....don't expect you to return it. Just thought...I might have been enough."
At this, he spared her a small, playful smile. "You know I think a lot of myself." And she'd always been able to knock his pride back a peg or two.
The more he spoke was the more this was starting to sound a lot like another conversation she'd had back in her Fourth Year of Hogwarts. That conversation had been going grand until it got to this part--because there had been a this part back then too, only difference was that explanation had been coming from her.
She'd been the one having to explain she didn't mean to have feelings that weren't wanted by either party.
"I know how that works, really." To an extent at least. She'd never fallen in full blown love with anyone (nor did she wish to) but she had found herself in the unfortunate position of developing feelings for her bestfriend.
Rhydian's words...were the exact words she'd written, the exact ones she'd felt and it had her growing quiet for a long time because she DID know, first hand and didn't ever want to know ever again. He was making her feel worse about this whole thing. Having gone through it all, she should have approached it with more sensitivity than what she'd shown.
"You shouldn't think like that...don't...try to be enough for me." She'd never been raised to know that sentiment; nothing was ever enough.
"It's....I...there's no 'enough' if I'm not looking for a limit. Wasn't made for............love."
And then the boss lady happened.

"I'm not interrupting a moment am I?" she greeted curtly, hazel eyes scanning the two YATI in the office. And where exactly was everyone else? At least these two were on time, though whether that was by design or simply a matter of convenience was yet to be seen.
Negating the wards on one of the desks in their vicinity, she took a moment to lean against it, perching herself only on the very corner of it.
"Cambridge, what's the status with the Russian's?" May as well kick things off... the others could catch up.
Talk about shoddy timing. Lex's face went a couple shades redder at the thought of just how much of their conversation the new boss lady had heard. It wasn't exactly the best first impression, not by a long shot and in all honesty, she'd forgotten about the notice she'd seen on her way in to collect the file. Mortified, that's what she was.
"Not interrupting at all." She insisted, trying to train her face back to its normal colour as she grabbed the file she'd come back for in the first place and hopped to her feet.
"We'll.......finish this after." Though it wasn't a question. There was no way she would continue this line of conversation, not with the woman she needed to impress right there and others pouring into the room. It just wasn't happening.
Lex cleared her throat, drawing on her composure once more. Business time. Right. Russians.
"My source tells me they're planning another meeting in the Alley within the fortnight. Did a couple checks on my own just to verify and the shopkeep's expecting a close of business on the..." She took a moment to flip open the document folder,
"15th. Wouldn't re-open unless my pocket did some serious talking." Which wasn't necessary, she just needed confirmation something big was happening.
"Caught the goblin checking off an inventory of cages then having them brought right over to the Chimney Sweep Elf Shop's side entrance. Too big to be for the Elves themselves so it looks like they're expecting a few more of their furry friends. Looks to be another full blown transaction. It's not certain how long til they'll be back after this trip, it's our best shot."
