It was a relief to know he knew that much. It wasn't an accident....but it wasn't a malicious act either.
Just when he sounded like he was really getting to the meat of the matter, he went and brought up the reason she'd left her apartment so fast that day. Alexa Cambridge did not abandon chocolate; it spoke to just how serious this was.
Another silence fell between them but her gaze remained fixed. She'd had words prepared vaguely but they were all gone now, forcing her to think up new ones.
The problem with moving forward was just how far she was thrown off by his last sentence. It just brought her right back to that. In the end she chose to pretend he hadn't said it, focusing instead on what he'd said about being a free spirit. "Right. Exactly and I like being that way. When I said I didn't do titles or commitment...I wasn't trying to be difficult." Lots of people thought that was the case for some reason or another. "It's just...real confining and that's not how I work." Even 'loose titles' were confining if his reaction was anything to go off of.
There had been some expectations, that was clear enough now; expectations she hadn't been aware of. Now that they were having this conversation, Rhydian was starting to wish they weren't. Still, he forced himself to remain in place and willed himself to hold her gaze. As hard as it was. As much as he wanted to keep looking away.
So, instead, he nodded his head. He understood. Really, he did. "I know. I do know." But that didn't seem like a good enough explanation, and he felt he owed her an explanation, given that was what they had agreed on in the first place. No titles, no commitments. Nothing.
Reaching up, he rubbed his neck and then pulled his hand forward through his hair, leaving it a right mess. "I know...and I'm sorry. It just....happened for me, Lex. I can't say I intended it. It just...kinda...grew." Did that make sense? He winced, remembering how that line of conversation went the first time. "I didn't....don't expect you to return it. Just thought...I might have been enough."
At this, he spared her a small, playful smile. "You know I think a lot of myself." And she'd always been able to knock his pride back a peg or two.
