Not to doubt Maggie's abilities, but she didn't seem the type to ride a giant snake hedge around a circuit. Then again, neither did Dot, but here she was, standing primly in line for her turn to ride... a bush. A plant, which was not on Dot's list of favorite things. She was doing this for TWO reasons only.
First, because she was prefect and had to be a good example. And second, because Maggie had, and Dot might have forgiven the younger girl but she wasn't about to be shown up by her.
As Maggie climbed down and tagged her, Dot was already scrambling up into place atop the snake. It was moving without her, slithering with a sort of more-than-snake-like zeal for winning that meant it was definitely all Slytherin. They ought to win, really, considering the fact that they didn't have plodding legs like the other... OH MERLIN, CORNER.
Dot held on for dear life and made that high-pitched EEEE sound she made when flying, but she could pretend it was parseltongue if anyone asked. Dottie the Snake Whisperer. Go go go go go go gooooo ANOTHER CORNER OH NO. She clung to the nearest branches flat out and prayed to anything listening that she didn't die from a shrubbery at a picnic.
At long last, the finish line, and her waiting teammate. Dot started sliding down carefully, ready to jump off and tag the next waiting person at the right moment.
