Because the first year definitely didn't know how to do that well enough to safely get his housemate up there.
Before they had much time to begin dangerously levitating each other, an adult showed up, perhaps the best adult they could wish for! "Professor Myers, thanks for coming to help us! We'll definitely have the best looking topiary now!" They guy had been hired at Hogwarts because of his work and knowledge of plants. How could they loose? Well numbers were a problem right now but surely the Herbology Professor counted as more than one person helping.
Milo had NOT known the spell so that was a good way to start. "Diffindo, right. Got it." He'd have to practice once or twice surely but he could get it down soon enough.
The feet would be a good start but before he could even get his wand out, Miss Sophie had arrived and started suggesting something else. The feet wouldn't be too important. "Maybe we can work on the rest and then decide on the feet when we are almost finished? See what looks right with the rest of it?" She also had another spell to help with. He would have to remember these for classes.
Deciding he might as well start practicing the spell and maybe get a few unruly branches out of the way in the process, Milo pulled his wand out and marched back to the topiary and what would be the 'body' of the eagle. "Diffindo!" The branches moved, a leaf fell off but it was probably the wind. "Dif-fin-do!" This time Milo said it much more forceful and with as much intent as he could muster. A quick cutting sound was made and a small section of branches fell from the rest of the plant. "Oh man! Look what I did!!" Quote:

Joining the students already formed around the bush along with Paul and already working with transforming the bush he said a big smile pursing his lips as he greeted everyone in turn. "Hello Rooney, Milo, Sophie and Prof Myers! I can picture the bush turning into an eagle already. If we just continue to trim it with care to details then I'm sure we'll get a nice eagle shaped bush that we might after the event take back with us to the common room." It'd be awfully nice if they could. Maybe Paul could help him levitate it there or Justin. "Are we transforming the bush to look like the eagle is in the air flying?" Leo wondered as he rolled up the sleeves of his coat, pulled out his wand and got to work on back of the bush. Quote:

He swallowed the dregs and sauntered over to the garden area where the competition for topiary shaping was already underway. He perused the competition progress in a lacklustre manner. He was seriously considering ditching this event as he'd had his fill of breakfast and quite frankly, his thumbs just weren't that green.
He could see the Ravenclaw group gathered around their forming eagle topiary talking animatedly. They seemed to be scrutinizing every detail of the trimming process, what was it with Ravenclaws?
He was unenthused to say the least. Although, he figured, he wouldn't mind learning that Diffindo spell. Resigned, he sighed and started to approach the group, he could see the girl flapping her arms around like a bird. "Ahem, sorry guys, I got held up. Is there anything I can do? Can you show me that Diffindo spell?" He said with a smile. Quote:

"What about flipnsnipwitit?" Davie contributed, poking his glasses up his nose a bit. "That spell is specifically designed for shrubbery...." Right, Professor Myers? Right? Right? Quote:

Nifty little non-traditional spell that Paul used ...seldom, mostly because he wasn't a magical trimming shrubbery fellow.
But no matter! "Well, Diffindo OR Flipnsnipwitit...Miss Brown has the wand movement down for the snippy one--" he chuckled to himself and nodded at Sophie's idea about the wings being spread. "YES! I LOVE IT!" Creativity was FLOWING! HE COULD FEEL IT. HE LOVED IT.
Oh, HI LEO! Paul smiled and waved at his friend! "Yes--I think Sophie's idea is a winning one, for sure! An eagle about to take off--right right---" he was so confident in the Ravenclaw team!
ANOTHER STUDENT. Sabbath. The one with the weird name, yes, Paul knew this face from classes. How calm and relaxed he looked. "Nice to see you, m'boy!" he waved at him. "Diffindo or Flipnsnipwitit...whichever suits your fancy--the latter is the one specifically for shrubs--" he always forgot it, personally.
DAVID TRUEBRIDGE! Paul was excited to see him, too! "Hello, m'boy! Nice to see you! And yes--that's the one--Miss Brown has..reminded me of it." SOME Herbology professor he was, forgetting' SPELLS LEFT AND RIGHT, HMM? Paul didn't let it bother him too much. A mind could only store...so many things that weren't used in day-to-day life. "All right team. Are we ready to go?" Quote:

Okay, so it would be a little struggle to cut through it or just snap things with his hands, so they really would need to use their wands for it. ”Um.. Do you think we should start at the top, instead of the feet? In case it gets a little top-heavy?” And failed to soar alongside their expectations? Having Professor Myers’ hand clapped on his shoulder meant that he couldn’t get closer to Miss Sophie Brown and encourage her to give him a hug or put her hand on his shoulder or use him as a leaning post. What about a stool. He could crouch. Be a foot stall for her when she was finished with this and ready to study for her end of year exams. Those important ones.
Instead he just smiled wide at her and thought about how the light was catching her hair in such a way that it looked heavenly.
Maybe that was just her. But her idea about a soaring eagle was the most wonderful… ”What was that, Miss Sophie Brown?” Of Hogwarts. ”Flipsnip…what?” He hadn’t been listening enough to catch the end. He was actually just thinking about what different lights would do to her skin. Hm.. Pretty, of course. ”I’ll put you on my shoulders if you want, Milo?” Or..they could leave that to the taller Ravenclaws, because Rooney wasn’t certain that he’d be able to hold Milo up for too long. Maybe they could achieve a totem pole of Ravenclaw students?
The others that turned up got a smile from him, but he really was just a little bit captivated by the Head Girl, her ideas and the task ahead of them. Captivated enough that he took his notebook from his trousers and tried to draw out a map for their work with actual measurements. That was, if he was guessing the height and width correctly. Quote:

But she was just in time to hear the tail end of the instructions. They were going to have the eagle with its wings spread, as if it were taking off. Sounded MAJESTIC.
Stuffing the last bit of bacon into her mouth, Evie wiped the crumbs off her hands and onto her uniform and pulled her wand. "Flipnsnipwitit," Evangeline said slowly to Rooney, who had just asked Sophie what it was, but... whatever, you know, Evie was there to help too. "It's the trimming charm. It's really good for small branches and details. Diffindo will do good for bigger branches, too."
And with that, Evie designated herself a WING DESIGNER. Since she was older and had a bit of experience with wandwork, Evie started trimming away branches to create a feathery looking texture for the eagle's wings. "Flipnsnipwitit!" She cast multiple times to help shape the wings. You know, she wasn't particularly artistic, but maybe Topiary designing was easier than painting... Quote:

It wasn't an official title, but Evangeline could have it if it kept her upbeat and helpful when Rooney hadn't heard things from other students. Besides, it didn't inconvenience anyone else, did it? If it did, Roo would think properly about calling her by her name instead of a self-proclaimed title. "WAIT!!" Rooney panicked, flapped his arms and tried to get the attention of Evie and everyone else. "I HAVE THE MEASUREMENTS SKETCHED OUUUUT." And they were already cutting into it and he was losing time to change his measurements accordingly. "The measurements...." Sophie was not one who could help with the taller parts as she was likely the shortest seventh year around at five feet two inches. Milo was already getting to work, but Soph stayed attuned to the conversation - she didn't respond to Sabbath's question, as Milo was helpfully demonstrating the spell for anyone who didn't know by putting the spell right into action - and she nodded along at all the talk. Yes, she thought they would make the topiary fly... but wasn't that the whole point of the topiary race to come? Wouldn't they HAVE to animate them? Certainly Botros didn't expect their eagle to run along or anything, so flying had to be the way to go. And her idea of having the eagle READY TO TAKE FLIGHT made that all the more relevant.
Smiling at Davie, Soph nodded further at Myers letting the boy know Soph had suggested that, and opened her mouth to respond to Rooney's questioning of the trimming charm when...
Evie arrived, helpful as ever. Yes. Of course. No doubt the girl would be as pleasant as could be in front of their Head of House, the other professors, and the whole school. Typical.
There was visible strain on Sophie's face when Rooney - sweet, angelic Rooney - called Evie Head Babe, and Sophie's jaw clenched, suddenly moving and walking around to the other side of the topiary from the group at large. Yeah, so Evie WAS a babe, and the first time Soph had heard of Evie calling herself that, she'd laughed, but... times had changed. And so had Evangeline Shacklebolt.
So she was just going to... work over here. Yes. Except she HEARD Rooney's distress about the measurements, and... Soph peeked her head around at him. "Hang on. Y'got this planned out already?" Smart kid, but he was clearly distressed because people were MESSING IT UP. Maybe... she could help ease his stress by giving him a sense of purpose? "Gimme guidance, Oh Great One." The Head Girl raised her wand, pointing it toward the bush, and looked to the second year, smiling encouragingly.
