But she was, especially after her run she took anyway, and only the trained eye would've still been able to see those traces of exhaustion in her complexion and demeanor.
But it was DEFENSE time, so that at least helped a little in providing her with the pick-me-up she needed. It was always fun to see Dakest, and--
That smug smirk was the first thing she noticed, followed closely by his missing bottom half. He was ridiculous, did he know? He was like an excited little kid bursting at the seams, like he had a BIG secret to tell, but his secret wasn't a secret at all because everyone could see him. Nerd. "You are... something else, sir," was her choice of greeting, an amused smile accompanying her words as she caught sight of the instructions about the chalk and retrieved her own board and piece of chalk to accompany it.
Turning back to survey the class and her options of where to sit... Sophie hesitated. There was Zander, which was the obvious choice, and Penelope, Ilia, Ethan, Norah, Cinna, Davie, Janelle... and, of course, Evangeline Shacklebolt. Defense Against the Dark Arts class used to make her think of Mo, but ever since last term, it felt like her class with Evie, as she and Evie had bonded with Dakest together at the very start of the term. Dakest was like a bond that held them together... or used to, until everything unraveled at the seams at the beginning of THIS term.
Still... Sophie threw an apprehensive look at Dakest, then at Evie, then at Dakest again, as if silently conveying her thought process of... If I sit with her and she gets mean again like I told you, you'll take care of it, right? Not that she couldn't handle herself, except that... she couldn't handle herself. Not this. She'd never had to deal with someone hating her before and going out of their way to be mean to her. This was a new experience for Sophie Brown and she hated it, but... what... better way to try to work this through than with Dakest there to supervise? Dakest wouldn't tolerate Evie being rude to her in the way she had been in charms class, so...
Before she could stop her feet, they were already taking her over to her dormmate, and Sophie sat down cross-legged beside Evie, her board in her lap, and gave the Head Babe an uncertain smile. "Know y'hate me now, but this class feels like ours 'n it'd feel wrong to sit somewhere else. My uncool isn't contagious," or whatever, "you're not gonna catch it." Humoring her, all right? Just because Evie hated her, it didn't mean Sophie wanted to stop being friends with her. She just... wanted to work it out.
But could they?
She was people watching, as she did on occasion. It was a common thing for her to do, especially in class when she was surrounded by other students in other houses. It intrigued her to see how to interacted with each other. As for herself, Evie didn't have any friends in the class yet. Her eyes moved over to the Head Girl when she entered the room and she sat up straighter and diverted her attention to her chalk board. Watching Sophie in her peripheral vision, Evie randomly drew little doodles on her board as she waited for class to begin, fully expecting Sophie to ignore her, as she was ignoring Sophie, and sit with her boyfriend.
But, as she saw in her peripheral vision, the head girl did the opposite and sat by her instead. Evie sat silently and avoided eye contact, keeping all focus on the chalkboard on her lap that she was currently doodling flowers onto. Pff, look at her. Such a perfect role model. Evie was the one being mean and Sophie was the one the one trying to fix things. Evie let Sophie's sentence hang for a silent moment. Her eyes looked up and around at their classmates who were in their own little world. Evie had been mean to Sophie in charms class and Sophie had spat right back at her... but now she was humoring her? Being nice? Trying to connect with her again? Evie's eyes landed on Dakest. Her attitude in this class was significantly different than it was in Charms the other day. Evie felt the need to impress Dakest in every way. She wanted to be an auror; she had to prove she was worth it. And that meant not being a snot to Sophie, which was going to be HARD because she just SAT by her. Was Sophie trying to prove the same thing to Dakest too? "I don't hate you," was all she said, returning her eyes to her chalk board. Funny how that was the first thing she assumed. |
